Believe it or not, I do remember seeing Joe Dante's family-friendly Science Fiction release Explorers when it played theatrically during the summer of 1985, and I do remember being suitably unimpressed. Well, to be perfectly honest, I think I enjoyed the first half of the flick -- it's a great cast and an interesting premise of these young'uns who make First Contact (ultimately) with a species of TV-watching aliens -- but the finale was more than a bit undercooked. Alas ... as they say ... different strokes for different folks ...
In any event, the whole reason I'm posting this is that I did some research this morning, and I noticed that the kind folks at Shout Select are releasing a new pressing of the film on this upcoming May 25th to the consumer marketplace. As it's SciFi and something viewers might be interested in re-discovering, I'll be happy to post the trailer below as well as the information from Shout Factory's website thereafter.
YOU DON'T NEED A DRIVER'S LICENSE TO REACH THE STARS.
The visionary dreams of three curious and adventuresome young boys become an exciting reality in Explorers, the action-fantasy from acclaimed director Joe Dante (Gremlins), who combines keen humor, warmth and fantasy with unexpected twists.
In their makeshift laboratory, the boys use an amazing discovery and their ingenuity to build their own spaceship and launch themselves on a fantastic interplanetary journey. A galaxy of adventure for the whole family, Explorers stars a young River Phoenix (Stand By Me, Sneakers) and Ethan Hawke (Training Day, Reality Bites).
