August 21: Ladies Rule! Ladies Rule!

8/21/2014

Who doesn't love it when the ladies come out on top?  I certainly know fanboys appreciate the women who traffic in the realm of Science Fiction, and -- so far as birthdays go -- it's usually the guys who rack up multiple appearances; so it's nice to see a bevy of lovely ladies coming in to rule the day.  Be sure to check them out below.

AUGUST 20: SciFi Stars Come in all shapes & sizes

8/19/2014

It never ceases to amaze me the variety of talented people drawn to Science Fiction.  Whether they've worked it in directly or whether they've only had some passing mention, they still manage to bring something fresh -- something notable -- to the genre in whatever way they've found it, and the work we're left with moves us still after they've moved along home.  Take a look at the variety of birthdays cited below, and perhaps you'll agree with the wild, woolly, and wacky citation I've given in the headline.

August 19: When Star Trek Meets JarJar Binks

8/19/2014

Well, if that don't beat all: rarely does it happen that SciFi fans get to experience an amazing high alongside an amazing low on the same day in Science Fiction History, but stranger things have been known to happen.  How could the stars have possibly aligned in such a way to give us Gene Roddenberry and JarJar Binks from the same astrological influence?  Perhaps I exaggerate, but it is my column so I'll stick with it.

August 18: A Wealth Of SciFi Birthdays

8/18/2014

Picture
I guess I shouldn't be surprised.  As I mentioned yesterday, some days are just days light on SciFi material.  But rarely does that occur two days in-a-row.  Usually, the day after an uncharacteristically light day is like today -- a day fairly big on birthdays -- and those are always worth celebrating.

Without further ado, let's get to the highlights, shall we?

See you tomorrow, peeps!

August 17: 'Light' doesn't Mean 'Blight'

8/17/2014

Picture
It's a truism from where I come from: if you don't have all that much to say, then that only means one has to look harder.  That's what I'm doing spending a little bit of what time I can each day to continue to grow my SciFi History database.  So if there's something which you know could be cited for any particular day in the calendar year, please don't hesitate to drop me a line via the Contact page reachable via that "More..." prompt at the top to your right.  I'm always looking for additions.

And -- if you're still hungry for more -- don't forget to check out August's SciFi Extras -- my interview with SciFi author Ashley Quigley-- which can be found right here: link

Otherwise, I'll dispense with the rhetoric and let you get to the real reason you're here: celebrating today's big, medium, and small moments in SciFi History.

See you tomorrow!

August 16: SciFi Forces all Come Together

8/16/2014

Picture
What an amazing confluence of SciFi themes converging on a single day!  First, you're got one modern man thrown five centuries into the future; then, you've got one Neanderthal finding his way into present day; and last (but not least) you've got a cinema auteur showing you what 'things to come' might just look like.

Methinks that's why I've found Science Fiction such a fascination genre: practically anything is possible ... and any given day can remind all of us of that truth.  Sure, some only chalk it all up as little more than 'fiction,' but it's no less fascinating to consider.

Check out the specifics right here.

August 10: Grabbers Will Grab Your Funny Bone

8/10/2014

Picture
What is THAT you ask?  Well, that's a scene from the UK release Grabbers.  If you haven't seen it, then you've missed the most fun in a SciFi comedy since Tremors, so I encourage you to check it out on home video.

On a procedural note: I will be on a much needed vacation for the next X-number of days.  I won't have the kind of internet access I have at home, so this is just to let you know that the next six days will be much lighter on content than usual.

In the meantime, check out today's entry ...

... and I will see you when I see you.

August 9: The Abyss Arrives

8/9/2014

Picture
I can still recall seeing The Abyss when it premiered on this day back in 1989.  I don't know about you, but I wasn't all that impressed.  Sure, the visuals looked good, and I loved the cast, but when it was all done and over with it just seemed too 'feel good' for me.  Meh.  Whatever.  If you're looking for more, then make sure to follow the link:

Those of you who experienced Science Fiction television of the 1970's will find a cause to celebrate today's On This Day In Science Fiction History, that's for sure.  Be sure to follow the link and explore to your heart's content:

August 7: Li'l Jake Sisko Ain't So li'l Any more!

8/7/2014

One of the things that was incidentally neat over Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's seen-year-run was watching Cirroc Lofton start to grow up from a lad into a young man.  That's something that writers can't quite plan for, so some of the stories felt a bit off but still interesting.  Lofton celebrates his birthday today, as to a host of others.  Check 'em all out here:

Thanks for reading, and I'll see you soon!
