I caught the news in a blurb that kinda/sorta suggested that the man's biggest and most memorable role was aboard James Cameron's Titanic (1997) which I guess -- from a certain point of view -- might be accurate. Titanic is revered as one of the highest grossing motion pictures ever, but -- for what it's worth -- I think a great deal more folks will remember him as 'King Theoden' aboard Peter Jackson's stellar theatrical adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings. Under his inspired performance, Theoden rose to be one of the strong moral centers for all of Middle-Earth; and he gave us a modern day vision of what a Fantasy ruler could and perhaps should be like.
Naturally, he stopped at a good deal other properties along the way, many of which gravitated toward more conventional stuff. I just did a review for his birthday citation on SciFiHistory.Net, and I was honestly surprised with how many comedies the actor left his mark upon. (Honestly, I haven't seen many of them; I just read his credited roles, and there were quite a few chucklers in there.) Without a doubt, his work aboard Rings resulted in the most awards citations; and I hope if nothing else that speaks to the enduring quality of the talent he brought to the screen.
Our warmest prayers are extended to the family, friends, and fans of Bernard Hill.
May he forever rest in peace.
