On this day in 1961 (in the United Kingdom), A For Andromeda enjoyed its original broadcast existence premiere, introducing audiences to an intellectual property that was followed up with a second series a year late (The Andromeda Breakthrough). The first show starred Esmond Knight, Patricia Kneale, Peter Halliday, Noel Johnson, and Julie Christie. According to IMDB.com, here's the series' premise:
"In 1970, a team of scientists decipher a mysterious signal from space and discover that it provides instructions to build a powerful super-computer. Once built, this computer provokes argument between two of leading team members, Fleming and Dawnay, over the machine's real intentions as it provides further instructions to create a living organism, which Dawnay starts to develop. Later it appears to compel lab assistant Christine to commit suicide, and when the organism is fully developed, it appears in the exact form of Christine, and named Andromeda. But what is the purpose of this "creature"?"

On this day in 1981 (in France), Ulysse 31 enjoyed its small screen birth, giving home audiences another take on Homer's "The Odyssey" in animation format. Here's the series' premise as provided by our friends at IMDB.com:
"To return home and restore his cursed crew, a great hero of space and his child companions must find the Kingdom of Hades against all evil opposition."

Well ... if there can be only one, then why shouldn't it be Adrian Paul? The seminal Fantasy-themed Highlander morphed from the big screen to the small screen into a weekly serialized adventure of the man who couldn't quite die, and the series' producers were smart to cast Paul in the role of Duncan MacLeod. Lasting an incredible six seasons, I guess that proves that there, indeed, were immortals hiding out there amongst us, and they needed to be dealt with. Here's the premise as provided by IMDB.com:
"Duncan MacLeod is Immortal, and must live in modern society, concealing his true nature while fighting other Immortals."

Dark Angel was another one of those semi-popular Science Fiction dramas brought to life (and television) compliments of 20th Century Fox, the network SciFi fans love to hate. For all of its posturing with genetic storylines and the like, the show never quite seemed to break out of the mold of being little more than a 'star vehicle' for the just-emerging starlot Jessica Alba. Still, it lasted a few seasons -- after premiering on this day in 2000 -- and those who followed it closely have fond memories of it, indeed. Here's the series' premise as provided by IMDB.com:
"A group of genetically-enhanced children escape from a lab project. Years later we meet Max, one of the escapees who now works for a messenger service in the post-apocalyptic Pacific Northwest."

Personally, I've always thought the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars a fascinating idea with almost limitless storytelling possibilities. Sure, it's always great to go back and explore events perhaps previously mentioned in the greater mythology involving that galaxy far, far away; but it also gives storytellers the chance to introduce new characters and situations which only build on an already existing foundation. The program first aired two thirty minutes installments on this day in 2008, and the landscape of The Clone Wars continues to play out in exciting and mysterious ways. Here's the series' premise as provided by IMDB.com:
"Jedi Knights lead the Grand Army of the Republic against the droid army of the Separatists."

NBC's Timeless kinda/sorta became 'the little show that could' as fans pushed to save it from cancellation after its first season, granting it a second shot at life. Unfortunately, the time travel show never really quite built a head of steam and was inevitably cancelled after its second season, but network executives were quick to greenlight a telefilm that'll hopefully ties up all of its loose ends, historical inaccuracies, and whatnot. Here's the series' premise as provided by IMDB.com:
"An unlikely trio travel through time in order to battle unknown criminals and protect history as we know it."

Personally, I'd love to see actress Lena Headey land a role in a Star Trek production. (I say this freely admitting that I'd love to see her in anything, to be honest.) She roared understandably to prominence for her portrayal of the tough yet not insensitive Queen Gorgo in Zack Snyder's adaptation of Frank Miller's 300, and SciFi fandom embraced her as the mother of John Connor in Fox TV's Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Don't even get me started on how well she chewed scenery in 2012's epic Dredd. In my book, she can do no wrong.
Headey was born on this day back in 1973.

2006's Children of Men was an epic look at an apocalyptic future directed by critical favorite Alfonso Cuaron. His interest aroused, Fleming trains the telescope in the direction of the signal, which is a series of long and short beeps, like a morse code message. Fleming continues to listen to the signal, and its repetitive pattern eventually convinces him that it must be from an intelligent source. Fleming informs his colleagues, who are equally convinced, and then his employers, the Ministry of Defence, who compel him to secrecy on pain of losing his job."

Thankfully, Star Trek: The Next Generation didn't make a habit of re-visiting the strange new worlds, civilizations, and situations of the original Star Trek, but they did it to middling effectiveness more often than they should have. Case in point: TNG's first season outing "The Naked Now" saw how well this new 'generation' would perform when essentially intoxicated by some space virus. It premiered in syndication on this day in 1987.
