Yes, yes, yes. When I was a young'un, I grew up on the films of Abbott & Costello. (No, no, no! This wasn't first run in theaters, but it was on television in reruns.) And veteran funnyman Lou Costello could always make me laugh, even when it was in something as goofy as Abbott And Costello Go To Mars (1953). But the comic duo helped resurrection the whole Universal Pictures Monster Movie Universe with such pictures as Abbot And Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948), Abbott And Costello Meet The Killer Boris Karloff (1949), Bud Abbott And Lou Costello Meets The Invisible Man (1951), Abbott And Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde (1953), and Abbott And Costello Meet The Mummy (1955). I'll admit that the films of stuntman-turned-director Hal Needham are an acquired taste, and (yes) that includes his entry into the realm of Science Fiction and Fantasy, Megaforce (1982). (Kids, this singular epic was nominated for an incredible three Razzies.) Still, his Smokey And The Bandit (1977) -- though not Science Fiction nor Fantasy -- maintains a soft spot in my heart for some of its laughs. Though he's no longer with us, Needham was born on this day in 1931.
