On this day in 1956 (in the former Soviet Union), Ilya Muromets (aka The Sword And The Dragon) first roared on the silver screen.  Directed by Aleksandr Ptushko from a story by Mikhail Kochnev, the film starred Boris Andreyev, Shukur Burkhanov, Andrei Abrikosov, and others.

According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:

"A mythical knight goes on an epic journey and fights barbarian hordes in an ancient land."
