Cybergirl -- the Australian SciFi series largely targetting a youth demographic -- shows up in my SciFi and Fantasy research from time-to-time, but I've yet to see a single episode. Premiering on this day back in 2001, the program served as a vehicle to deliver Ania Stepien to the masses-at-large; and it did win the 2001 trophy for 'Best Children's Television Drama' from the Australian Film Institute during its time in original broadcast rotation. Here's the series' premise as provided by IMDB.com:
"A renegade human prototype Cybergirl crash-lands on Earth to explore the humanity on which she is partly modelled. She takes refuge with fourteen-year-old Jackson Campbell and his bemused father Hugh, who welcome into their family this young stranger with such astonishing powers. Desperate to experience life in the glorious metropolis of River City, Cybergirl assumes a human identity as Jackson's cousin Ashley, and so begins her exploration of the challenges and excitement of life as a teenage girl."

On this day in 1930 (in the U.S.), the character of The Shadow entered radio broadcasting history by showing up as the narrator of the Detective Story Hour. With his popularity on the rise, it was only natural for the mysterious man with the ability to cloud mens' minds to branch out on his own, conquer the airwaves and print media for quite some time, and a cultural icon was born.

That big fella up there on the left is none other than Ted Cassidy, and -- for the record -- he lurched his way into Star Trek history with the portrayal of 'Ruk' in the first season episode "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" For those of you keeping score, he also went on to play Bigfoot (twice) in the mid-70's SciFi series The Six Million Dollar Man. As fate would have it, Cassidy acted in front of the camera and behind it as a voice actor in animation. Other forays into the realms of the Fantastic include such projects as The Angry Red Planet (1959), The Addams Family, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Lost In Space, Batman, The Girl From U.N.C.L.E., Frankenstein Jr And The Impossibles, Jack And The Beanstalk (1967), Mr. Terrific, Super President, Fantastic Four, I Dream Of Jeannie, Tarzan, Space Ghost, Genesis II (1973), Planet Earth (1974), The Intruder (1975), The Bionic Woman, Space Sentinels, The Incredible Hulk (1977), The Return Of The Incredible Hulk (1977), Man From Atlantis, Dr. Strange (1978), and even a few more. For reasons subject to some debate amongst serious film historians, the 1970's served up some rather bleak cinematic Science Fiction, one of the oft-overlooked being Z.P.G. (aka Zero Population Growth) (1972). It was restored and rereleased by Kino Lorber in 2017 and probably deserves another look by serious fans of the genre. In it, the lovely Geraldine Chaplin defies the rules set down by society and has a child all of her own. Chaplin was born on this day in 1944.

Wow. What a career one must have to star in not one but two massively successful sci-fi franchises! Michael Biehn first came onto screens as 'Kyle Reese,' a soldier from our future sent back in time to save Sarah Connor from The Terminator who'd come back to kill her. And what a great introduction to the series he gave us! Then, a few years later, James Cameron brought the star into the Aliens franchise, giving him a star-turn as Corporal Hicks, who fights the aliens side-by-side with Sigourney Weaver. Biehn was born on this day back in 1956.
