The original Battlestar Galactica premiered on U.S. television on this date back in 1978. The "Saga of a Star World" introduced audiences to the dastardly Cylons who tried to wipe humanity clean off the galactic map by launching a massive offensive on the Twelve Colonies. Names like Apollo, Starbuck, and Adama entered our pop cultural mythology, but, alas, the Glen Larson series only lasted a single season. (Yes, it was kinda/sorta retooled not long after with a short season of Galactica 1980, but many of us from that era choose to ignore that tepid incarnation.) Here's the series premise as provided by IMDB.com:
"After the destruction of the Twelve Colonies of Mankind, the last major fighter carrier leads a makeshift fugitive fleet on a desperate search for the legendary planet Earth."

The history of television is filled with forgotten shows of yesteryear, and I suspect The Powers Of Matthew Star certainly falls into that category. (It premiered on this day in 1982.) The young and equally photogenic Mr. Star was essentially a super-powered alien from a distant star -- think Superman but without all of his super abilities -- who found himself hiding out on Earth after fleeing the otherthrow of his homeworld. The program maintains a few interesting Star Trek associations: Trek producer Harve Bennett helped bring Star to the small screen; Leonard Nimoy directed an episode; and Walter Koenig penned one of the show's scripts. Here's the series premise as provided by IMDB.com:
"Matthew Star was a prince on the planet Quadris, who was forced to flee to Earth when his planet's government was overthrown by despots. On Earth, he took the form of an ordinary high-school student (albeit one with superpowers), and was accompanied by his guardian Walt, who became the school's science teacher. The American government knew of Matthew and Walt's origin, and used them to act as agents on occasion."

Alas, I'm a bit of an anomaly for 'men of a certain age' in that I didn't quite get into animated projects as much as others did. I had a few programs that I enjoyed, but The Transformers just wasn't one of them. I found the program in its original run really being marketed more toward the juvenile set, so I completely tuned it out after a few viewings. Regardless, I always appreciate longevity, and the franchise certainly continues to grow and impress others as its found new life after a string of popular motion pictures. Here's the plot summary from IMDB.com for the show that premiered on this day in 1984:
"During the great Cybertronian War, the Autobots and the Decepticons crash landed on Earth. Millions of years later, geological activity revives the warring factions - the Decepticons want to strip Earth of its vast energy resources, and the Autobots seek to protect the inhabitants of Earth from that fate. And so an endless battle begins in a crucial race to find an energy source for their homeworld Cybertron."

On this day in 2010, Sym-Bionic Titan delivered audiences to yet one more animated universe from which to escape reality. Created by the storytellers of Bryan Andrews, Paul Rudish, and Genndy Tartakovsky, the program looks to have aired almost exclusively on Cartoon Network ... a position which can be somewhat cruel when trying to capture a wide audience for its future. Here's the plot summary for the franchise as provided by IMDB.com:
"Three young alien beings with the ability to form a giant robotic warrior attempt to blend into suburbia, all while battling the tyrannical forces that ravaged their home world."

To be fair, it isn't all that often that Science Fiction influences a generation the way Star Trek fueled countless millions to look to the stars, so we'd probably all be better folks if we took the time to appreciate such widespread cultural acclaim. That's what the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) did on this day back in 1976 when -- out of respect to the requests of the franchise's most ardent fans -- the government agency dubbed its very first space shuttle with the name of Enterprise, matching that of the iconic starship of the Gene Roddenberry creation. Though this particular shuttle never quite saw space the way its later models did, I think this still stands as a testament to Roddenberry's enduring vision, that of pushing mankind into the Final Frontier. As always, live long and prosper! [Source: Wikipedia.org]
The venerable George Cleveland enjoyed a little bit of screen time in the guise of 'Professor Hensley' aboard Flash Gordon (1936) motion picture serial. Interestingly enough, IMDB.com notes that he returned to the role in 1938's Flash Gordon's Trip To Mars, yet his contributions ended up on the cutting room floor. Though he's no longer with us, Cleveland was born on this day in 1885.

Born on this day back in 1928, Roddy McDowall led an impressive life in film and TV career, participating in hundreds of projects in his six decades of work. He made an appearance in TV's The Twilight Zone and played a few roles aboard the Planet of the Apes franchise. Walt Disney cast him as the voice of the robot 'Vincent' in The Black Hole. Also, he made a guest visit to the world of TV's Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, and he played the role of 'Father Stone' in the TV miniseries adaptation of Ray Bradbury's classic The Martian Chronicles. In the 90's, he completed a massive amount of voice work for many animated projects, such as Batman: The Animated Series and even Pinky and the Brain. He's no longer with us, but his talent is definitely one for the ages.

That affable looking fellow is Bruce Spence, and he's been doing some terrific work in Science Fiction perhaps as long as Science Fiction has struck gold with mainstream audiences. Though you might not necessarily recognize Cassandra Peterson for her voice acting aboard the animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, horror fans everywhere know her secret identity as the scarily fetching Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, a cult icon if ever there were one. Certainly, scandal-plagued director Bryan Singer knows a thing or two about what fandom wants in its big budget blockbusters. His record? Well, he's been at the head of several franchise properties including X-Men (2000), Superman Returns (2006), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), Legion, and The Gifted. Kyle Chandler has done some great work on the big and small screens, but -- for curious reasons -- superstardom curiously escapes the talented man. I didn't watch Defying Gravity when it aired on ABC. Unfortunately, the reviews were not good, and I just didn't want to have my heart broken over yet another SciFi venture dooming itself before really getting off the ground.
