Nothing but nothing screams 'lovely' than a bunch of wonderfully talented women dressed up in space garb, and such was the case with the premiere of the SciFi/Cult series Star Maidens on this day in 1976.  This one's a bit of an oddity for me -- I've only seen snippets of it online -- but it definitely sounds like something of its era that would interest me.  For those wanting to know a bit more, here's the program's summation as provided by our friends at IMDB.com:

"Medusa, a planet from another solar system drifts into Earth's system. The surface of this planet is no longer habitable and the inhabitants have moved to a high-tech underground city. The society is ruled by women, who of course, are all beautiful. Men are considered mentally inferior and are divided into two categories: the "adequately intelligent" who are selected by women to act as their personal "domestics" for household chores, and the remainder who are forced to perform menial labor under the supervision of female guards. The guards are attired nicely in visored helmets, boots, hot pants, and elbow-length gloves which are used to control the men through some sort of apparent force. Two of the men from Medusa escape and head to Earth, determined to be free of their female oppressors. But they are pursued by two Medusan women. When the Earth authorities fail to help capture the fugitives, the Medusan women take two Earth scientists (a man and a woman) back to Medusa until an exchange can be arranged. The earthlings are forced to take their designated places in Medusan society. The man is chosen as a domestic, sometimes forced to work on a city maintenance crew, and the woman is assigned an elite white-collar job. The men and women from both worlds adjust to their new surroundings as the battle of the sexes continues."

I find it nothing short of amazing that Ray Bradbury -- of all people -- would credit Edgar Rice Burroughs as being, bar none, the single most influential writer of the 20th Century; and that's quite probably because almost every artist, every filmmaker, every storyteller has drawn on the inspirations of the man's epic works.

Among Burroughs' scholars, it's fairly well known that the man failed (miserably) at almost every enterprise he undertook ... that is until, in 1911, he discovered how much he preferred writing stories.  "Under the Moons of Mars" was his first written tale -- it garnered him a $400 check, as well as a world of inspiration -- and it's been said that this single act -- the publication of his first tale -- is commonly recognized as a significant changing point in the history of literature.

Burroughs would go on to create two of the most adventurous characters in books: Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, and John Carter of Mars. Both properties remain powerful in publishing even today.

If you're interested in knowing more about him, check out the official website bearing his name:

He was born on this day in 1875 ... and, yes, he changed the look of our world.  Happy Birthday!

As regular readers of SciFiHistory.Net will attest, I'll take any opportunity to champion a good SciFi comedy: they never get enough love.  One of my personal favorites is 1985's Real Genius.  In it, the lovely Michelle Meyrink played the super-smart but delightfully clueless Jordan (pictured above).  Meyrink was born on this day in 1962.

[Note: as can happen with older films, specific release dates can be lost to history -- until such enterprising young smiler goes out for deeper research.  Rather than see these flicks go unmentioned in SciFiHistory.Net's pages, I generally try to feature them on the first day of their release month, as is the case with this particular feature.]
