Nothing but nothing screams 'lovely' than a bunch of wonderfully talented women dressed up in space garb, and such was the case with the premiere of the SciFi/Cult series Star Maidens on this day in 1976. This one's a bit of an oddity for me -- I've only seen snippets of it online -- but it definitely sounds like something of its era that would interest me. For those wanting to know a bit more, here's the program's summation as provided by our friends at IMDB.com:
"Medusa, a planet from another solar system drifts into Earth's system. The surface of this planet is no longer habitable and the inhabitants have moved to a high-tech underground city. The society is ruled by women, who of course, are all beautiful. Men are considered mentally inferior and are divided into two categories: the "adequately intelligent" who are selected by women to act as their personal "domestics" for household chores, and the remainder who are forced to perform menial labor under the supervision of female guards. The guards are attired nicely in visored helmets, boots, hot pants, and elbow-length gloves which are used to control the men through some sort of apparent force. Two of the men from Medusa escape and head to Earth, determined to be free of their female oppressors. But they are pursued by two Medusan women. When the Earth authorities fail to help capture the fugitives, the Medusan women take two Earth scientists (a man and a woman) back to Medusa until an exchange can be arranged. The earthlings are forced to take their designated places in Medusan society. The man is chosen as a domestic, sometimes forced to work on a city maintenance crew, and the woman is assigned an elite white-collar job. The men and women from both worlds adjust to their new surroundings as the battle of the sexes continues."

I find it nothing short of amazing that Ray Bradbury -- of all people -- would credit Edgar Rice Burroughs as being, bar none, the single most influential writer of the 20th Century; and that's quite probably because almost every artist, every filmmaker, every storyteller has drawn on the inspirations of the man's epic works.
Among Burroughs' scholars, it's fairly well known that the man failed (miserably) at almost every enterprise he undertook ... that is until, in 1911, he discovered how much he preferred writing stories. "Under the Moons of Mars" was his first written tale -- it garnered him a $400 check, as well as a world of inspiration -- and it's been said that this single act -- the publication of his first tale -- is commonly recognized as a significant changing point in the history of literature.
Burroughs would go on to create two of the most adventurous characters in books: Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, and John Carter of Mars. Both properties remain powerful in publishing even today.

IMDB.com reports that the exotic-looking Betty Blythe was a marquee star of the movies during her reign of 1920's cinema, and some of her notoriety might be owed to the fact that she was one of the very first talents to appear nude (or partially-nude) on screen. Whatever the case may be, I encourage genre fans to check out her work in the interesting She (1925), an adaptation of the H. Rider Haggard fantasy novel. Though she's no longer with us, Blythe was born on this day in 1893.

Written (in part) and directed by Václav Vorlícek, the SciFi/Comedy starred Vladimír Mensík, Jirí Sovák, and Iva Janzurová. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:

A star is born! And it's ... undead! On this day in 1978 (in Italy), the original master of the undead -- George A. Romero -- first unleashed Dawn Of The Dead for audiences in attendance of its Torino premiere. The film starred David Emge, Ken Foree, and Scott H. Reiniger. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:

On this day in 1979 (in the United Kingdom), Ridley Scott's Alien played for audiences in attendance of the Edinburgh International Film Festival. The film starred Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, and John Hurt. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"After a space merchant vessel receives an unknown transmission as a distress call, one of the crew is attacked by a mysterious life form and they soon realize that its life cycle has merely begun."
For the record:
The original Alien was a film that I was a bit slow to love. I thought it was technically brilliant, but I honestly felt its 'rewatchability' was a bit low: once you knew where all the scares were, then the effect is pretty much lost. However, I gave it many, many, many second chances ... and it still manages to scare me all of these years later. In fact, I think Alien and Aliens are the only two films in all of the series that I truly am frightened by the Xenomorphs. And, of course, I'd be a fool if I failed to mention that the original won the coveted Oscar for 'Best Special Effects' in 1980. Like a great film should, Alien continues to resonate today, as I suspect will be the case for years to come.

On this day in 1982 (in the U.S.), Taking Tiger Mountain played for audiences in attendance of the Independent Feature Film Market. A bit of a cultural oddity, the film's greatest claim-to-fame (it would seem) is that it was a project headlined by the late Bill Paxton, who apparently appears fully nude in the feature. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"Militant feminist scientists brainwash research subject to assassinate the Welsh Minister of Prostitution. Meanwhile World War III is being fought and the USA has been invaded."

"A young boy accidentally joins a band of time travelling dwarves, as they jump from era to era looking for treasure to steal."
For the record:
Time Bandits proved itself a worthy competitor at the international box office, and there's even been talk of rebooting the franchise in the modern era.

Written and directed by Todd Durham, the SciFi/Comedy starred Alan Marx, Paula Poundstone, and Chris Elliott. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:

Written (in part) and directed by Aaron Lipstadt, the SciFi feature starred Rae Dawn Chong, Darrell Larson, and John Stockwell. Here's the plot summary that's provided by IMDB.com:

On this day in 1990 (in Czechoslovakia), The Terminator terminated the competition at the box office. Written and directed by James Cameron, the SciFi feature starred Michael Biehn, Linda Hamilton, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Here's the plot summary from IMDB.com:
"A human soldier is sent from 2029 to 1984 to stop an almost indestructible cyborg killing machine, sent from the same year, which has been programmed to execute a young woman whose unborn son is the key to humanity's future salvation."
For the record:
It's impossible to deny the clout James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger earned with the release of this little gem. Yes, it gave them a franchise in the broader scheme of things, but it's an enduring property that continues to produce iterations in film, television, and print which give fans more to consume, if not think about. As for the original flick? The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films was smitten, giving the feature an incredible three Saturn Awards ('Best Make-up,' 'Best Writing,' and 'Best Science Fiction Film') while having to settle for nominations only in four other categories ('Best Music,' 'Best Director,' 'Best Actress,' and 'Best Actor'). Like that unstoppable machine of the title, the franchise refuses to go down for the fight, and I suspect we'll see more of the same in the years ahead.

"A fancy, loner cop loses his partner to a crazed terrorist during a hostage rescue. He settles for the terrorist going to Death Row in jail. When the Cyborg "Spartacus" wakes up accidentally, he kills the scientists and their guests, then goes to set things up for a Cyborg Empire. Only Jack and a few friends know how to stop him."
For the record:
Technically, the actual premiere date for Cyborg Cop II is presently lost to history. IMDB.com reports that the film opened in Japan during September of 1994, but there's no exact date. I'm using this date -- the first of September -- until such a time as I find more precise information.

Now, the rodents involved in the laboratory experiment upstairs are not the only rats in the facility that will become the altered species.
