TV's Harsh Realm is one of those vastly underrated programs that definitely deserved a stronger chance than it was given. Premiering on this day back in 1999, Realm sprang from the imagination of The X-Files' creator Chris Carter (though I have read it was based on a comic book property of its day as well), and it pitted a cast of strong characters inside a virtual reality construct against the conspirators on the outside trying to keep them trapped within. Sadly, it only lasted for nine episodes, but I'd argue that it's one of those shows definite worth looking up on-your-own if for only to imagine what could've been.
That genial looking fellow is none other than Frank Herbert. For those of you who don't know, Herbert penned Dune -- the epic Science Fiction novel published in 1965 -- that garnered the Hugo Award in 1966. Not only does it have the distinction of being the very first novel ever awarded the Nebula Award for Best Novel, but Dune remains -- to this day -- the world's best-selling science fiction book. Ever. Though he's no longer with us, Herbert was born on this day in 1920.

It's hard to describe the journey of 'Ellen Ripley' in the Alien saga and not be totally bowled over by the acting of Sigourney Weaver. It started small -- she was just another crewmember on a salvage ship -- and then it ended (so far as we know) with her death and eventual cloning in Alien Resurrection. Along the way, she saw that we were properly scared silly being chased by the most deadly creature in all the universe. Ms. Weaver was born on this day back in 1949.

Matt Damon's alleged "clout" apparently wasn't enough to wipe the stink from Elysium (2013): the Neill Blomkamp flick was budgeted at $115 million and never crossed the $100 million mark in grosses at the box office. Kristanna Loken had the really thankless task of trying to not only be yet another model of the Terminator but also had to compete alongside the legendary Arnold Schwarzenegger to do it. Such was the case with Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Alas, she may've managed to outlast the massive Austrian, but reviews were still unkind. Because so very much of 1993's Demolition Man -- starring Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes as the good cop/bad guy characters depicted above -- was delivered so tongue-in-cheek, I can't imagine anyone expected fans to take it seriously. It was a great li'l sci-fi comedy flick that ended up having some solid fight sequences starring the two titans, and that's not too shabby. It first played theatrically on this day back then.
