As a huge fan of the original George Pal motion picture, I picked up the television series DVD set of War Of The Worlds for my collection not long after it came available in the marketplace. (FYI: this incarnation of the story picks up on the events explored in the film, and it first premiered in television syndication on this day in 1988.) I watched a handful of episodes, and while I wasn't completely won over I did enjoy what I saw. I really do need to get back to it sometime soon. In any event, here's the premise as listed on the reliable IMDB.com:
"Humanity must resume its war against the Martians when they revive after decades of hibernation following their defeat in the 1950s."
For the record:
To the show's credit, it did receive a Saturn Award nomination for 'Best Genre Television Series' in 1990 from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films.

Sheena is exactly the kind of property genre producers can get a lot of mileage out of. (FYI: this version premiered on this day in 2000 and starred the perfectly fetching Gena Lee Nolin as its equally fetching leading lady.) Essentially, it's a Fantasy/Adventure franchise that gives storytellers an entire world of possibilities to work with. For what it's worth, I'd love to see more of this, as I think the market could always benefit from some stand-alone, episodic adventures for folks who like that sort of thing. Here's the series' premise as provided by IMDB.com:
"Orphaned at the age of 6, Shirley Hamilton is taken in by the Shamaness Kali and taught how to morph into almost any animal. She shall become Sheena, Queen of the Jungle."

Despite the fact that The CW's incarnation of the DC Comics' signature character The Flash wasn't the first superhero drama on the network, fans could make a strong case that it's arguably one of the best. Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes, Tom Cavanagh, and Jesse L. Martin have all turned in solid work as the crew face with saving the world on a weekly basis; and the show's writing team have continued to push the limits of drama while raising the stakes with each progressive season. The popular progarm premiered on this day back in 2014, and it continues to explore gallantry and villainy to the delight of audiences around the world. Indeed, "run, Barry, run!" Here's the premise from IMDB.com:
"After being struck by lightning, Barry Allen wakes up from his coma to discover he's been given the power of super speed, becoming the next Flash, fighting crime in Central City."

Sorry, folks, but I just don't anime ... but I do occasionally happen across some of the programming that the movers and shakers push onto unsuspecting audiences. In that spirit, I'm pleased to disclose that on this day in 2014, Trinity Seven enjoyed its U.S. television premiere. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the premise behind the program:
"In this "romantic comedy but sometimes serious magical school story," life as Arata Kasuga knows it is wiped out by a bizarre incident known as "Collapse Phenomenon," which causes worldwide destruction and takes his cousin Hijiri Kasuga to the next world. To resolve the "Collapse Phenomenon" and bring back Hijiri, Arata enrolls in the Royal Biblia Academy. Waiting in the school are seven beautiful female magic users-The Trinity Seven."

Though her professional career clocks in somewhat small by comparison to most folks covered on these pages (her IMDB.com lists just over thirty appearances), the late Melinda O. Indeed, her time in the business granted fans a look at what she could do aboard My Favorite Martian, Lost In Space, The Invisible Man, The Bionic Woman, The Aliens Are Coming (1980), Knight Rider, and A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985). The entire Star Trek franchise has had a long-established habit of introducing some of the loveliest ladies ever into the pantheon of SciFi women, and -- for my tastes -- few were as lovely as Rosalyn Landor (pictured from her appearance in Star Trek: The Next Generation's second season episode, "Up The Long Ladder"). According to IMDB.com, she's worked relatively sparingly since them, largely performing voice work in video game projects, but let's me thankful she, her accent, and her midriff came aboard the 24th Century when it did. Landor was born on this day in 1958.

It isn't every day that SciFiHistory.Net gets to draw attention to Judy Landers' considerable assets (ahem!), but then again it isn't every day that films like 1989's Dr. Alien see general release. Go figure. And speaking of figures: Landers was born on this day in 1958.

Directed by Quentin Lawrence, the SciFi/Horror starred Forrest Tucker, Laurence Payne, and Jennifer Jayne; and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"A remote mountain resort in Switzerland is invaded by horrible alien creatures that like to decapitate humans. The beings are also in telepathic communication with people and inhabit a mysterious, radioactive cloud at the base of the Trollenberg mountain."
For the record:
The Crawling Eye was -- understandably -- lampooned by the merry yucksters at Mystery Science Theater 3000 during its run on television.

"Two brothers, scientists Scott and Tony Nelson, develop an amplifier which enables a person to enter a 4th dimensional state, allowing him to pass through any object. Scott experiments on himself and discovers that each time he passes through something he ages rapidly. He begins killing people, sucking out their life energies and regaining his youth as a result. It falls to Tony and Scott's girlfriend, Linda, to try to put a stop to his murderous rampage."
For the record:
IMDB.com denotes that this was the cinematic debut of actress Lee Meriwhether, as actress who would go on to play 'Catwoman' in the Batman TV series, make a visit to the world of Star Trek, and enjoy a big role aboard Irwin Allen's The Time Tunnel.

A star is born! On this day in 1982 (in Italy), Ator, The Fighting Eagle first soared onto the silver screen. Written (in part) and directed by Joe D'Amato, the Fantasy feature starred Miles O'Keeffe, Sabrina Siani, and Ritza Brown; and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"The son of Torren learns of his heritage, goes to avenge the deaths of his fellow villagers, and rescue his sister/love interest from the evil Dakkar and his spider cult. Ator battles giant spiders, swordsmen cloaked in shadow, re-animated dead warriors, and horribly hideous witches."
For the record:
While perhaps not the recipient of any major commercial or critical praise, Ator -- at the very least -- was the launch of a new fantasy franchise. This first film was followed by The Blade Master in 1983, which eventually begat Iron Warrior in 1987, which paved the way to the final installment known as Ator IV: The Hobgoblin in 1990.

A star is born ... or is that porn? On this day in 1983 (in Japan), Blonde Goddess opened on the silver screen to tempt interested viewers. Written (in part) and directed by Bill Milling, the Fantasy/Adventure starred David Messa, Barbara Peckinpaugh, and Jacqueline Lorians. Here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"Adventurer Louisiana Smith comes to the rescue of Jungle Jane as she is about to be sacrificed by lusty Indians in the Yucatan in 1936. Suddenly, we cut to the offices of Marble Comics where comic artist nerd Elmo Smathers has been fantasizing, in Walter Mitty fashion, as his boss gives him a talking-to. His depravities are under fire by a sexy Comics Code representative. As the latter loosens up, throwing herself at the boss of the comic book company, Elmo fantasizes over other scenarios including himself as Johnny Ace, WWI ace pilot, battling the German Black Baron; as Private Eye Jack Hammer; and as a heroic construction worker who is transported to a spaceship by the galactic overlord, Megazon (along with a beautiful and innocently by-standing earthling). The "Blonde Goddess" makes an appearance in each fantasy."
Editor's Note:
Technically, IMDB.com reports that the film opened in the U.S. some time in 1982, but at present that release date appears lost to history so I'm using this date as its theatrical launch.
For the record:
I'd be remiss if I failed to point out that Blonde Goddess enjoyed a nomination in the category of 'Best Art And Set Direction' in 1983 from the Adult Film Association Of America.

A star is born! Or let's make that a franchise! Despite a relatively low-budget presentation, Alien Nation -- which premiered on this day in 1988 (in Canada and the U.S.) -- is actually a nice little film. It takes that 'fish out of water' formula -- an aging Earth cop who's no good with partners and a newly relocated alien from another world trying to find his place in human society -- and fleshes it out quite expertly. Also, the film helped to launched a television incarnation which enjoyed both a full season's commitment as well as a small series of telefilms to further explore and wrap up the mythology. Here's the plot summary from IMDB.com:
"A few years from now, Earth will have the first contact with an alien civilization. These aliens, known as Newcomers, slowly begin to be integrated into human society after years of quarantine."
For the record:
As well as launching a new franchise for Science Fiction fans to enjoy, the first film enjoyed a reasonable amount of attention from the professional organizations. In 1990, the Academy Of Science Fiction, Fantasy, And Horror Films awarded it their Saturn Award in the category of 'Best Science Fiction Film.' (The feature had to settle for nominations alone in the categories of 'Best Make-Up' and 'Best Supporting Actor.') Also, in 1989 it enjoyed the Hugo Award nomination in the category of 'Best Dramatic Presentation.'

On this day in 1989 (in Japan), the Terminator franchise endured yet another foreign-fueled rip-off when Lady Terminator can to life. To be fair, it's far more horror than it is SciFi, but I thought it worth listing here due to its obvious inspiration. It has a bit of a cult following, largely due to the good looks of its leading actress, and I suppose there's nothing wrong with that. Here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:

Written (in part) and directed by Yûji Moriyama, the animated Fantasy starred the voices of Miki Itô, Emi Shinohara, and Michie Tomizawa. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:

She's wearing a heart-shaped crystal with a hexagram inside, and is chanting mysterious prayers in private. At the ruins of an ancient civilization, an archaeologist spies a hexagram among the hieroglyphics. "Frozen in 1996, Simon Phoenix, a convicted crime lord, is revived for a parole hearing well into the 21st century. Revived into a society free from crime, Phoenix resumes his murderous rampage, and no one can stop him. John Spartan, the police officer who captured Phoenix in 1996, has also been cryogenically frozen, this time for a crime he did not commit. On this day in 1999 (in Japan), The Killer Eye focused its killer vision on the home video release marketplace. Directed by David DeCoteau, the SciFi/Horror starred Jacqueline Lovell, Jonathan Norman, and Nanette Bianchi; and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"An ophthamologist is trying to develop a technique for seeing into another dimension. After a previous experiment went terribly wrong, blinding his test subject he makes some revisions to his methodology. Unfortunately, his latest experiment is a horrible success. And the message she delivers is terrifying: Remember. Survive. Run."
