As grand and as accomplished a director as Ang Lee remains, I thought all he really accomplished in the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was prove he was a bit of out his league. 2003's Hulk was far too 'heady' for what brings audiences to a superhero production, and it's pretty much disappeared from existence as a consequence. 2019's Gemini Man was a bit more centered, but -- as a Science Fiction vehicle -- it, too, failed to light all that many fires in the world of genre products. Lee was born on this day in 1954.

I've only relatively recently explored the goodness that is Star Trek Continues, a web-based property that continued the adventures of Captain Kirk and the U.S.S. Enterprise with the same crew, albeit new faces. Yes, yes, yes: I was aware of it, but I hadn't taken the time to watch a lot of it. Frankly, it's all very well done, with solid stories reminiscent of the original's tone, and the actors all do solid work. Grant Imahara helped put helmsman Hikaru Sulu back in the driver's seat, and the talent was also well known for his work while under employ for George Lucas's ILM. I've said it before -- so pardon me while I'll say it again -- but Stargate: Universe was the only TV version of the Stargate franchise that I could seriously get into. Maybe the fact that it was so different thematically than what came before -- which I found a bit saccharin -- that it just felt right to me. Anyway, its first season episode "Light" aired on this day back in 2009, and the action saw the crew coming to grips with the fact that the ship, Destiny, was flying right into the sun ... and they apparently had no way to save themselves.
