Actor Klaus Kinski (that's his head above) earned a reputation for being a 'ferocious' actor as well as a ferocious person. Predator 2 (1990) is a curious failure of a movie, never necessarily any fault of the acting talent. It just never quite came together in the way the original film did, though it has many interesting elements and performances, including a small one from Calvin Lockhart as the ganglord, King Willie. Though he's no longer with us, Lockhart was born on this day in 1934.

Before really making a lasting impression on mankind with his comic chops in the CBS comedy hit Everybody Loves Raymond, Peter Boyle guest-starred with Scully and Mulder in Fox TV's The X-Files. "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" cast Boyle as Bruckman, a down-on-his-luck insurance salesman who just happened to be gifted with the ability to see precisely how his customers were going to kick the bucket -- a role for which the actor went on to win the Emmy for 'Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.' I realize that there's a contingent of sci-fi fans who don't think very highly of sci-fi comedy, but I'll give it a shout out when it happens across my desk. A star is born! On this day in 1989 (in the U.S.), mankind was treated to yet one more cinematic version of the Apocalypse with the release of Warlords. Directed by Fred Olen Ray, the SciFi/Fantasy starred David Carradine, Sid Haig, and Dawn Wildsmith. Here's the premise from IMDB.com:
"Dow is an ex-soldier searching the wasteland for his wife who was taken from him by the Warlord. With only a disembodied, wisecracking head and a renegade woman named Danny as his companions, they roam the terrain to try and get back the woman that Dow lost."
For the record:
Warlords is a bit on an odd duck chronologically based solely on information that's currently available on the World Wide Web. For example, IMDB.com clearly indicates that the film was produced in 1988, but the first release citation they provide is on this day in 1989 when it launched on home video. I'll use this as its premiere date until I can find any further information.

Also, the film is another one of those flicks whose original release date presently escapes me. A star is born! On this day in 1994 (in Germany), the SciFi flick Cyborg Cop II enjoyed its premiere on home video. (At this point, it appears the film's original premiere date -- sometime in September, 1994 -- is lost to history.) The feature starred David Bradley and Morgan Hunter, and here's the plot summary from IMDB.com:
"A fancy, loner cop loses his partner to a crazed terrorist during a hostage rescue. He settles for the terrorist going to Death Row in jail. What Jack doesn't know is that the terrorist will be taken and turned into a cyborg for the "Anti-Terrorist Group". When the Cyborg "Spartacus" wakes up accidentally, he kills the scientists and their guests, then goes to set things up for a Cyborg Empire. Only Jack and a few friends know how to stop him."

On this day in 1997 (in South Korea), Pamela Anderson brought out her big guns with the release of Barb Wire. Based on a Dark Horse Comics property, the SciFi/Fantasy also starred Jennifer Banko and Xander Berkeley, and here's the plot summary that's provided by IMDB.com:
"In the early 21st century, the USA is in the wake of the Second Civil War. The whole country is in a constant state of emergency. What was formerly called the American Congress now rules the country with fascistic methods. There is only one free city left, Steel Harbor, a coastal California industrial town which is headquarters for the resistance. This is the home town of Barb Wire, owner of the Hammerhead nightclub. As times aren't good, Barb has a second job. She's a bounty hunter and you probably wouldn't want her after you. Barb's credo is to never take sides for anybody and that's the only way to survive these days in the crime-ridden streets of Steel Harbor. One evening, her former lover Axel Hood appears at the club asking for a favor to help him and his lover Cora D flee the country to Canada, Barb suddenly finds herself to be key player on high political stage. Now she has to take sides."
For the record:
Woof. Though I suspect Barb Wire is not without its merits, the feature film did manage to draw the attention of the Razzie Awards ... which recognized the effort with an incredible six nominations. Star Pamela Anderson took home top honors in the category of 'Worst New Star,' but the film missed out of statues in the categories of 'Worst Original Song,' 'Worst Screen Couple,' 'Worst Actress,' 'Worst Screenplay,' and 'Worst Picture.'

For the record:
Despite an underwhelming story, RoboCop 2 did score three impressive nominations from the 1991 Saturn Awards: Best Science Fiction Film, Best Performance By A Younger Actor, and Best Special Effects. It lost in all three categories.

I had the good fortune to happen across Safety Not Guaranteed when a video distributor sent one to me, asking if I'd be so kind as to pen an online review for it. I put what promised to be a "time travel romantic comedy" in the machine not knowing what to expect, and I ended up loving it. It's brilliantly written and smartly performed by a young cast of up'n'comers. It was released on this day back in 2012, and, if you haven't seen it, I heartily recommend it. You'll be glad you did.

No, that's not Bill Shatner holding out his hands for his residuals check. That's a scene from "Is There In Truth No Beauty?" The episode of Star Trek first aired on this day back in 1968 (in the U.S.), and the story is a bit convoluted, suffice it to say that it involves an empath and a species ordinary human beings can't look at -- the Medusans -- without going bonkers. The episode also featured Diana Muldaur (in her second appearance on TOS), who went on to the role of Dr. Pulaski during the second season of Star Trek: The Next Generation's run.
