I have absolutely no problem admitting that I was late to the Smallville party: my viewing plate was pretty full at the time, and I just had very little interest in so much of what the WB Network had been airing in its line-up. Eventually, however, the positive reviews wore me down, and the wife and I binged the first three seasons on DVD. We didn't exactly fall in love with all of it, but the Freak-Of-The-Week format felt akin to what The X-Files had done so well for so long that we decided to hang with it. As one of the web's biggest Superman fans, I wasn't exactly thrilled with everything the showrunners did with the established mythology, but it's easy to forgive when so much of it went down like quality-tasting fast food. It premiered on this day back in 2001, and it lasted an impressive ten seasons.

Well, well. It looks like actor Peter Bowles wasn't putting up with any of Martin Landau's usual shenanigans when he visited Martin's signature SciFi program, Space:1999. Good for him. That's major guest star clout right there, people. Bowles was born on this day in 1936.

Veteran character actor Barry Corbin played General Beringer in 1983's WarGames, a wonderful cautionary tale that mixes light sci-fi with Cold War themes. To be perfectly frank, Corbin got the best line in the whole flick: he was asked about what steps would be necessary to stop the computer from launching a nuclear strike against the Soviet Union, and he replied, "I'd piss on a spark plug if I thought it would do any good!" Mr. Corbin was born on this day back in 1940.

Political activist and occasional actor Tim Robbins let his creepy politics play out like they would in Steven Spielberg's bloated War of the Worlds (2005), and he suffered his just desserts, his character being 'offed' by the film's much more bankable Tom Cruise. Still, gotta give Timbo credit for trying. He also appeared as one of the stars in Brian De Palma's ill-conceived Mission To Mars (2000). Robbins was born on this day in 1958.

One of the immortal lessons that hails from the world of Science Fiction is that even the smallest event can create massive consequences, and the Back to the Future films never ran out of ways of demonstrating this.
