Mutant X -- which premiered on this day in 2001 (in Canada) -- aired in U.S. television syndication, so I suspect its broadcast dates across the fruited plains varied. The Marvel property translated fairly well for television, though it never quite morphed into a juggernaut the way some other shows have. Producers paired up a good-looking cast with some minor superpowers, mixing in a handful of solid baddies for which they combatted the forces of evil. Here's the series' premise as provided by IMDB.com:
"A secret government project to create genetic mutants results in them being released into the general population. One of the scientists responsible, Adam, has sworn to try and help them, while his co-partner, Mason Eckhart, plans on using the project for his own ends. Adam assembles four mutants and forms the group "Mutant X" to help mutants everywhere, and oppose Eckhart."
For the record:
In 2004, series' star Victoria Pratt scored the Saturn Award nomination for 'Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series' from the Academy Of Science Fiction, Fantasy, And Horror Films.

It may've just been a smoggy bodyless head to some, but to SciFi fans that's Abraham Sofaer from "Charlie X," a first season episode of the classic Star Trek. The talented actor also booked time aboard The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, The Time Tunnel, and Lost In Space. Though he's no longer with us, Sofaer was born on this day in 1896.

Respect your elders, and they'll always do you right. That's the case with screen veteran James Whitmore. He didn't dabble in SciFi as much as I would've liked, but -- when he did -- he certainly did great things. For those of you who haven't seen the terrific giant ant movie from 1954 -- Them! -- you've certainly missed something. Whitmore played Police Sergeant Ben Peterson in it. In 1968, he played a distinct figure of authority -- the President of the Assembly -- in the landmark original Planet of the Apes. In his career, he also made a stop at The Twilight Zone just for good measure. Though he's no longer with us, Whitmore was born on this day in 1921.

Most folks know veteran actor George Peppard from either war movies or his run on The A-Team in the 1980's. Well, he also played a part in the Roger Corman SciFi flick, Battle Beyond the Stars, where he turned up as an aging mercenary-for-hire looking for one last great war to wage when he comes to the defense of an oppressed people. Check it out on home video if you haven't seen it. Though he's no longer with us, Peppard was born on this day in 1928.

The second (and shortened) season of NBC's Buck Rogers in the 25th Century ends up being sadly maligned by so many TV critics, and I think that's a shame, largely because that season actually felt much more like some classic Star Trek episodes than have many other programs in the history of television. Still, a slimmed-down budget contributed to some general production malaise, I suspect, and the show disappeared from the airwaves. In any event, Peter Kastner appeared in a second season outing -- "The Hand of the Goral" -- a cautionary tale about a planet's deep dark secret to find new 'heroes' to worship. Though he's no longer with us, Kastner was born on this day in 1943.

In Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Stephen Collins appeared as the young and ambitious Commander Willard Decker. He was intended to be the new captain of the Starship Enterprise, subsequent to its refit, but circumstances involving the emergence of a new threat to the galaxy brought Jim Kirk out of retirement, and Decker's career was temporarily put on hold. Mr. Collins also recently enjoyed a brief stint as the President of the United States for TNT's alien invasion drama, Falling Skies. Collins was born on this day back in 1947.

There's nothing wrong with playing the part of comic relief. There's especially nothing wrong with it when the script gives you as big a scene as it did the venerable Randy Quaid in 1996's terrific alien invasion romp Independence Day. Elizabeth Dennehy played the wonderfully prissy Commander Shelby in the memorable Star Trek: The Next Generation two-parter, "The Best of Both Worlds" ... so much so that didn't you want to hiss at her every time she was on screen? It may not be much, but funnyman Christopher Titus -- who once famously "joked" about his desire to assassinate Sarah Palin (link) and then tried to pass it off as "a joke" -- did make an appearance in the SciFi/Cult flick, Killer Klowns From Outer Space, and -- yes -- that deserves a mention here. As for his politics? Well, Hell is a hot place, from what I hear. Never forget who people are when they show their true colors, readers, especially racists, sexists, and bigots. On this day in 1987 (in South Korea), Alien enjoyed a rare theatrical re-release. Directed by Ridley Scott, the SciFi/Horror starred Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, and Ian Holm. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"After a space merchant vessel receives an unknown transmission as a distress call, one of the crew is attacked by a mysterious life form and they soon realize that its life cycle has merely begun."
For the record:
he original Alien was a film that I was a bit slow to love. I thought it was brilliant, but I honestly felt its 'rewatchability' was a bit low: once you knew where all the scares were, then the effect is pretty much lost. However, I gave it many, many, many second chances ... and it still manages to scare me all of these years later. In fact, I think Alien and Aliens are the only two films in all of the series that I truly am frightened by the Xenomorphs. And, of course, I'd be a fool if I failed to mention that the original won the coveted Oscar for 'Best Special Effects' in 1980. Like a great film should, Alien continues to resonate today, as I suspect will be the case for years to come.
