It was on this day back in 2009 (in Canada) that the single season existence of SciFi and Fantasy entertainment that was Starhyke came into being.  Created by Andrew Dymond, the project starred Claudia Christian, Suanne Braun, Jeremy Bulloch, Rachel Grant, Brad Gorton, Jason Bailey, Stephanie Jory, Gene Foad, Rebecca Nichols, Sue Witheridge, Fiona Reynard, Wayne Pilbeam, Simon Lewis, Simon Gilvear, and others.  According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the series' premise:

"The year is 3034, all emotions have been suppressed for hundreds of years and Earth is destroying the universe around them by waging war on every alien race they encounter."

The venerable Efrem Zimbalist Jr. left behind an incredible career just short of 100 different roles.  No doubt, animation fans love him for his work on Batman: The Animated Series as well as minor voice work on Superman: The Animated Series; but he also turned in solid work aboard Babylon 5.  Though he's no longer with us, Zimbalist Jr was born on this day in 1918.

Though a great deal of her professional career was in vastly more mainstream fare than I showcase on SciFiHistory.Net, Virginia Mayo still managed to squeeze in a few appearances worthy of mention.  Back in 1945, she starred opposite screen legend Danny Kaye in the Fantasy/Musical Wonder Man for The Samuel Goldwyn Company.  In 1957, she played no less than 'Cleopatra' herself in the curious Fantasy/Drama The Story Of Mankind.  In 1966, duty called again, and she crossed paths with the mind-bending Castle Of Evil for United Pictures.  Later in her life and career, she visited the worlds of Night Gallery, Haunted (1977), Evil Spirits (1991), and The Man Next Door (1997).  Though she's no longer with us, Mayo was born on this day in 1920.

A terrific dramatic actor, Richard Crenna occasionally put on his SciFi grubbies and showed the rest of us what he could do.  Such was the case with 1978's telefilm, A Fire In The Sky.  Though he's no longer with us, Crenna was born on this day in 1926.

Actress-turned-produced Hope Holiday has been christened a 'blonde tomboy' by the likes of IMDB.com, but her acting portfolio -- so far as genre entries goes -- is a bit slim.  However, she was one of the producers on Space Mutiny (1988), and that kind of contribution should always count for something around these parts.  Holiday was born on this day in 1930.

Though much of her career involves work in mainstream properties, Tsai Chin still managed to squeeze in some genre work: she's been seen aboard Invasion (1966), Titan A.E. (2000), Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.  Chin was born on this day in 1933.

SciFi Icons don't just contribute.  Icons blaze a clear, effective, and imaginative trail in which others are all to happy to follow.

Very few accomplished directors are able to deliver a compelling vision the way Ridley Scott can.  Then again, having been involved in the motion picture industry since the late 1950's can do that to a person.

However, Scott has been responsible for some of the most intelligent, most moving, and most profound science fiction films of the last generation.  His work on 1979's Alien really set the benchmark for how to successful incorporate a contemporary horror vision with sci-fi.  I know that some find 1982's Blade Runner to be a bit languid, but, for my tastes, it's a near perfect exploration of humanity juxtaposed against how artificial life might see it.  Then, in 2012, he again turned out a layered vision of mankind's possible past in Prometheus.  Even today, he's considering a possible return to the universe he helped fashion in Blade Runner, and I, for one, would definitely be interested in seeing what those replicants might be up to next.  If you're interested in knowing more about his other motion picture and television projects, then I'd encourage you to check out his impressive profile over at IMDB.com.

Mr. Scott was born on this day back in 1937.

Though perhaps best known for his portrayal of Al Capone's mob enforcer Frank Nitti in Brian De Palma's crime classic The Untouchables (1987), I think I'll always remember actor Billy Drago as the dastardly 'John Bly' in Fox TV's SciFi/Western hybrid The Adventures Of Brisco County, Jr.  He's also booked appearances in Cyborg 2, Sci-Fighters, The X-Files, and Supernatural for good measure.  Though he's no longer with us, Drago was born on this day in 1945.

Though she'll likely always be remembered for the sexy comic performance in the underrated baseball comedy Major League (1989), Margaret Whitton has a few genre credentials worthy of mention in this space.  In 1987, she appeared in an episode of the anthology Horror program Tales From The Darkside.  Then, in 1989, she crossed Horror with Comedy aboard Little Monsters for Davis Entertainment.  Though she's no longer with us, Whitton was born on this day in 1949.

On the original television series for V, the lovely June Chadwick played 'Lydia,' a sometimes-ally-sometimes-adversary to the all-powerful Diana.  A few years before that, she appeared as 'Dr. Barbara Glaser' in the deliciously campy Mutant (aka Forbidden World) for Roger Corman.  Chadwick was born on this day in 1951.

Though he's certainly gone on to appear in far more conventional drama, Mandy Patinkin -- early in his career -- certainly gave SciFi fans something to get excited about as the grounded alien/cop Samuel 'George' Francisco in 1988's favorite Alien Nation.  Patinkin was born on this day in 1952.

At the 1990 Saturn Awards, Patinkin received a nomination in the category of 'Best Supporting Actor' for his work aboard Alien Nation (1988).

Like so many men of my generation, I maintain that the best artistic portrayal of Batman to date remains that of Kevin Conroy.  He brought both the Dark Knight and Bruce Wayne to glorious life on Batman: The Animated Series as well as the exceptional Batman Beyond.  Though he's no longer with us, Conroy was born on this day in 1955.

Nancy Everhard was all the rage in genre entertainment in the late 1980's and 1990's.  I remember her from small breakout roles in Airwolf and The A-Team, and I recall her blossoming on the big screen in the otherwise forgettable DeepStar Six (see above).  I hated to see her character pass so sweetly on NBC's vastly underrated Reasonable Doubts.  Her resume is mostly quiet these days, but I'd love to see her make a comeback.  Everhard was born on this day in 1957.

Science Fiction and Comedy are two genres that do not always go together like chocolate and peanut butter, but kudos to the knuckleheads behind Coneheads for giving it a solid try.  A young Michelle Burke (above right) definitely made "youthful alien" look sexy, and fanboys are always thankful for that.  Burke was born on this day in 1970.

I don't normally push horror films in these parts of the web (though I do love a good scare as much as the next person), I'd be remiss if I didn't give a shout to Luke Hawker's appearance in The Devil's Rock (2011), a great little chiller that gives audiences a look at an alternate storyline involving the Allies' D-Day invasion.  The actor has also appeared The Killian Curse and a small role in Avatar.
