Actor Robert Vaughn had a great small role as a wealthy collector in one of my personal favorite B-movies, Battle Beyond the Stars. Otherwise, Vaughn built a reputation by playing secret agent Napoleon Solo in the 1960's series The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Though he's no longer with us, Vaughn was born on this day in 1932.

A quick scan of Craig Huxley's IMDB.com profile shows that he was indeed very busy as a child actor throughout much of the 1960's. In fact, he was so busy he made two appearances alone in the realm of TV's classic Star Trek (though in different roles). Later in life, he transitioned his love of music into continuing to work in the entertainment business, completing tracks for such genre favorites as Star Trek: The Next Generation, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and The Orville. Huxley was born on this day in 1954.

The lovely Mariel Hemingway joined Christopher Reeve in soaring to the heights (ahem!) that was Superman IV: The Quest For Peace ... and the franchise ground to a halt with a thud. Well, unless something super-wild-unpredictable happens, I guess Star Trek: First Contact -- released on this day back in 1996 (full theatrical release in the U.S. and Canada) -- will remain my favorite of the Next Generation series of movies. I wasn't as thrilled with it as most Trekkies, Trekkers, and Trek enthusiasts were -- I liked it well enough, I just thought it tweaked the Borg in some unusual directions. I never saw Picard as an 'action star' either, so that part of the flick put me off just a bit. Here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"The Borg travel back in time intent on preventing Earth's first contact with an alien species. Captain Picard and his crew pursue them to ensure that Zefram Cochrane makes his maiden flight reaching warp speed."
For the record:
To First Contact's credit, it was nominated for the 'Best Makeup' Oscar from the 1997 Academy Awards. (It lost out, however.) While the film was nominated for an impressive ten different Saturn Awards, it only took home trophies for 'Best Supporting Actor,' 'Best Supporting Actress,' and 'Best Costumes.'

Star Trek (TOS) genuinely boasted a fair number of 'firsts' in the history of broadcast television, and "Plato's Stepchildren" included yet one more: the first televised kiss between a white male and an African-American female. The episode aired on this day back in 1968. Now, depending upon whom you believe, I've heard and read several differing accounts of the said "kiss" -- some say the two never really touched lips, while Shatner and Nichols claim they did.
Whatever the case, it sure made for one more great hour of Trek TV.
