Ladies in the SciFi universe mustn't only be sexy to survive ... they gotta be tough. And being brainy sure doesn't hurt. Those are all of the distinct vibes given off my actress Ming-Na Wen, which is what made her a perfect addition to the cast of Syfy's Stargate: Universe. She played scientist Camile Wray to great effect. When that job (unfortunately) went away, producers cast her in a recurring role over in Eureka where she played U.S. Senator Michaela Wen. And when that job (unfortunately) also went away, Marvel's current go-to guy Joss Whedon signed her up for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. where she plays agent Melinda May. As one can conclude, she's indeed no stranger to genre entertainment! Ms. Wen was born on this day back in 1963, and she's looked lovely ever since. [Source: IMDB.com]
Say what you want about the current cinematic version of the Man of Steel, but my money is on actress Phyllis Thaxter: by far, she played the better Ma Kent to a young Kal-el, the visitor from the planet Krypton from Superman - The Movie. Though she's no longer with us, Ms. Thaxter was born on this day back in 1919.
Veteran character actor Jerry Hardin was a terrific guest star as part of the early seasons of The X-Files. He played a curiously informed 'Deep Throat' character who actually fueled much of Agent Fox Mulder's passion to find the truth 'out there.' Mr. Hardin was born on this day back in 1929.
Popular real-life game-show host Richard Dawson actually crossed over into sci-fi for the sole purpose of playing a popular game-show host in 1987's rather lukewarm The Running Man. Based on a book by Richard Bachman (aka Stephen King), television audiences are kept entertained in the world of tomorrow by witnessing the death of champions in a gritty, urban gladiator-like spectacle, and sci-fi regular Arnold Schwarzenegger played the hero to Dawson's villain. Though he's no longer with us, Dawson was born on this day back in 1932.
The great Veronica Hamel gave genre fans a wonderful look at her acting chops with a guest-starring turn aboard ABC TV's Lost. Hamel was born on this day in 1943.
Back in 1982, actor Richard Masur had a great year in sci-fi, appearing in John Carpenter's cult hit The Thing as well as a big part in the time travel action/adventure/comedy Timerider: The Adventures of Lyle Swann. Masur was born on this day in 1948.
The late Richard Brooker holds a place in film history as being one of the most menacing men behind a mask for bringing to life no less than Jason Voorhees in Friday The 13th: Part III, but he also chewed scenery in the guise of Oghris in the Roger Corman Fantasy release Deathstalker (1983). Though he's no longer with us, Brooker was born on this day in 1954. [Source: IMDB.com]
A few decades after she lit up the silver screen appearing as the aptly named 10 (1979), Bo Derek (above right) is still turning heads, now as part of the ensemble that brought Syfy's Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No to life. Derek was born on this day in 1956.
In the summer of 2016, CBS tried to spin a SciFi/Comedy called BrainDead about invading aliens eating the brains of U.S. politicians. I caught a few episodes of it, but it was way too uneven to be as biting a satire as intended, and it quickly disappeared from the dial. Jan Maxwell enjoyed a role in the short-lived series, and Maxwell was born on this day in 1956. [Source: IMDB.com]
Let's be straight on one thing: with no Sean Young, there is no Blade Runner. That's because her character -- Rachael -- was the catalyst for Harrison Ford's Deckard to question his place in that gritty, Ridley Scott universe. (Awesome film, and, if you haven't seen it, stop what you're doing right now and get to it!) Young was born on this day in 1959.
Ned Vaughn (above left) had a small role in arguably one of the best hours of Star Trek ever produced for the small screen. He appeared as Ensign Cortland Zweller, friend to Ensign Jean-Luc Picard during his Academy days, in the stellar Trek twist on It's A Wonderful Life called "Tapestry" (as part of Star Trek: The Next Generation). Vaughn has also had roles in NBC's The Event, Fox's 24, and CBS's J.A.G. He was born on this day back in 1964.
Voice actress extraordinaire Melissa Disney put her pipes to great use by voicing 'Menagerie' aboard the DC Comics video Superman Vs. The Elite (2012). Disney was born on this day in 1970. [Source: IMDB.com]
Methinks the appeal to Sabrina Lloyd is that she possesses a humble, girl-next-door-style beauty, and those traits show through with her winning characters. She roared onto the genre scene with a terrific role in Fox (and Syfy's) Sliders, though since that time she's embraced more mainstream programs. Lloyd was born on this day in 1970.
Thankfully, funnyman Joel McHale left most of the jokes at home when he joined Fox TV's 10th season return to Chris Carter's formerly epic The X-Files in 2016. (I say "formerly epic" as the show really has become a gutted and hollowed-out version of itself with little direction.) McHale was born on this day in 1971.
Amongst his various footprints left across the genre landscape, Jonathan Woodward included a stop aboard Joss Whedon's fondly remembered Firefly. Woodward was born on this day in 1973. [Source: IMDB.com]
Another day, another Power Ranger standing up against the forces of darkness! Jason Faunt suited up for duty in the guise of the 'Red Time Force Ranger' aboard several of thetelevised Power Rangers incarnations. Faunt was born on this day in 1974. [Source: IMDB.com]
Before he found small screen fame as part of the Chuck franchise, Joshua Gomez faced an alien invasion as part of ABC TV's short-lived Invasion. Gomez was born on this day in 1975.
Laura Harris braved the final frontier ... well, to be fair, she braved it for only the thirteen episodes of life ABC TV gave to its short-lived space drama, Defying Gravity. The talented lady has also appeared in such properties as M.A.N.T.I.S., The X-Files, Sliders, Total Recall 2070, The Outer Limits, Jake 2.0, Stargate: Atlantis, and Warehouse 13. Harris was born on this day in 1976.
I'll never forget Nadine Velazquez thanks to her brilliant comic work aboard NBC's My Name Is Earl, but thankfully she guested aboard Syfy's Z Nation so that I can feature her here. Velazquez was born on this day in 1978. [Source: IMDB.com]
A luminous Andrea Riseborough shared the screen alongside box office titan Tom Cruise in Oblivion (2013). Riseborough was born on this day in 1981.
Young Jeremy Jordan played 'Winn Schott,' a confidante to the female version of Big Blue herself aboard Supergirl. Jordan was born on this day in 1984.
Much of Dan Byrd's resume involves far more conventional projects than we mention here, but he did have a recurring guest spot aboard NBC's Heroes for a time. Byrd was born on this day in 1985. [Source: IMDB.com]
The After was a pilot produced by Amazon Studios from The X-Files creator Chris Carter. Though it had strong SciFi elements and a pretty stellar cast, it wasn't picked up by the streaming entity and languishes in that ever-growing pile of "what could've been." In any event, Jaina Lee Ortiz played a role in the property, and Ortiz was born on this day in 1986. [Source: IMDB.com]
That smiling young man in the middle is none other than Rhys Wakefield, one of the stars for the breakout franchise hit, The Purge (2013). Wakefield was born on this day in 1988.
On this day in 1950 (in Sweden), Destination Moon took audiences for a trip to Earth's only satellite. Directed by Irving Pichel, the groundbreaking film starred John Archer, Warner Anderson, and Dick Wesson; and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"After their latest rocket fails, Dr. Charles Cargraves and retired General Thayer have to start over again. This time, Gen. Thayer approaches Jim Barnes, the head of his own aviation construction firms to help build a rocket that will take them to the moon. Together they gather the captains of industry and all pledge to support the goals of having the United States be the first to put a man on the moon. They build their rocket and successfully leave the Earth's gravitational pull and make the landing as scheduled. Barnes has consumed too much fuel during the landing, leaving them short for the return voyage to Earth. After stripping the ship bare, they are still over 100 lbs too heavy, meaning that one of them will have to stay behind."
For the record:
At the 1951 Academy Awards, Destination Moon was nominated for the Oscar in the category of 'Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Color' but missed out on taking the statue home; it did, however, take home the gold in the category of 'Best Effects, Special Effects.' For the 1951 Hugo Awards, the film took home top honors in the category of 'Best Dramatic Presentation.'

On this day in 1968 (in Turkey), the original Planet Of The Apes enjoyed its theatrical release. Directed by Franklin J. Schaffner and based on the novel by Pierre Boulle (with the adaptation in part completed by The Twilight Zone master Rod Serling), the feature starred Charlton Heston, Kim Hunter, and Roddy McDowall, and here's the plot summary from IMDB.com:
"An astronaut crew crash-lands on a planet in the distant future where intelligent talking apes are the dominant species, and humans are the oppressed and enslaved."
For the record:
Decades later, Planet Of The Apes continues to impress both with the impact of the original film as well as the franchise's recreation in the 2000's. The feature was nominated for the 1969 Oscars in both the Best Costume Design and the Best Music (Original Score) categories but failed to capture the prized statue. Legendary make-up technician John Chambers did, however, secure an honorary Oscar for his achievements in bringing the Apes to life for the motion picture. So far as this viewer is concerned, I prefer these original Apes over the CGI creations of the modern era.

The lead truck, called "Monster" has been created by a boy genius and is to be driven by a woman through the course. The only problem is the computer guidance system fails and she ends up in uncharted territories. There she encounters leather-clad hoods who torture her and eventually kill her. Before dying she tells a fellow prisoner about the truck and he uses it to escape. Most of the rest of the film is his relationship ("2001" - Hal-like) with the truck's computer and his avoidance of attacking vehicles. Meanwhile back at the Terminus, the boy genius is ruled by a mysterious doctor, who may have another plan in mind."
