On this day in 1966, Star Trek's Enterprise came face-to-face (ahem) with an alien ship hell bent of destroying them for actions they had taken against its probe in the episode titled "The Corbomite Manuever."
The venerable Claude Rains was no stranger to genre work. While he's best remembered for his work in the film classic Casablanca, Rains' first real meaty feature role was as Dr. Jack Griffin, better known as The Invisible Man (1933). He also made time in his schedule to appear in The Wolf Man (1941), Phantom of the Opera (1943), The Lost World (1960), and Battle of the Worlds (1961). Though he's no longer with us, Rains was born on this day in 1889.
Certainly, Russell Johnson will be fondly remembered for his comic turn as the Professor on Gilligan's Island, but he did do some work in the realm of Science Fiction. MST3K immortalized his bits in This Island Earth (1955), but he also booked time on Adventures of Superman, It Came From Outer Space, The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, The Invaders, Wonder Woman, Beyond Westworld, and even ALF. Though he's no longer with us, Johnson was born on this day in 1924.
One of screen legend Richard Burton's final roles was to take up the mantle of O'Brien in the 1984 adaptation of George Orwell's SciFi gem 1984 (pictured). Though he's no longer with us, Burton was born on this day in 1925.
Aboard the immortal Star Wars (1977), actor Don Henderson stood toe-to-toe opposite Grand Moff Tarkin and Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith ... and I believe that'll always deserve a citation 'round these parts. The actor also paid visits to such properties as The Ghoul (1975), Brazil (1985), Billy The Kid And The Green Baize Vampire (1985), Knights Of God, The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen (1988), The BFG (1989), Merlin Of The Crystal Cave, No Escape (1994), Red Dwarf, and FairyTale: A True Story (1997). Though he's no longer with us, Henderson was born on this day in 1931.

One actor whose resume rarely gets the attention it deserves in Science Fiction is the late Roy Scheider. That's probably because so much of his work fell into the realm of more mainstream drama, action, and thrillers, but the man best remembered for needing a bigger boat in Jaws actually contributed some memorable performances to our beloved genre. 1983's Blue Thunder saw Scheider police helicopter pilot battling the authorities over the use of state-of-the-art military technology of the future to police the streets. 1984's 2010 revisits the universe jointly created by Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick, and Scheider's Heywood Floyd gave the film much of its pulse. While SeaQuest DSV and SeaQuest 2032 weren't exactly my cup of tea, I can appreciate the leadership Scheider brought to the role of Capt. Nathan Bridger. Though he's no longer with us, Scheider was born on this day in 1932.
Southern beauty Joanna Moore leaves behind a legacy of nearly one hundred different screen roles. Genre fans probably know her best from work aboard Monster on the Campus (1958) and Countdown (1967). Though she's no longer with us, Moore was born on this day in 1934.

The late Debra Hill had the good fortune of teaming up with genre master John Carpenter for a fair number of his flicks. Before her passing, she was involved with such projects as The Fog (1980), Escape From New York (1981), and Escape From L.A. (1996). Though she's no longer with us, Hill was born on this day in 1950.

Clare Higgins made a splash -- albeit briefly -- from a few small appearances on Doctor Who, though her fans known her best as Julia from the Hellraiser franchise. Higgins was born on this day in 1955.
Writer/producer/director Roland Emmerich has been a part of the biggest and boldest mainstream science fiction of the last twenty-five years. (Notice that I didn't say 'the best'!) Universal Soldier (1992). Stargate (1994). Independence Day (1996). Godzilla (1998). The Day After Tomorrow (2004). 2012 (2009). Independence Day: Resurgence (2016). Emmerich was born on this day in 1955.

One of the uncontested cinematic debacles of the late 20th century was the silver screen adaptation of the comic book property Spawn (1997) for which Michael Jai White suited up as the mercenary who came back from the dead to kinda/sorta avenge his murder. Seriously, the film was awful, no fault of White's. I think John Leguizamo even tooted his own flatulence as part of his stuntwork. Thankfully, White's career wasn't over. He even crossed over into SciFi by appearing as a human cop paired up with a synthetic one in writer/director Mark Atkins' Android Cop. White was born on this day in 1967.

In case you've missed it, Walton Goggins is an incredibly gifted actor. Sadly, very little of his resume lands in the realm of Science Fiction, but we can give him praise all the same. He did have a pretty slick appearance in the otherwise disappointing Predators (2010) reboot, as well as a small role in 2011's Cowboys & Aliens. Goggins was born on this day in 1971.

You'll forgive me if this sounds sexist but one of my undeniable truths of fandom is this: "when ladies dress up in tights and flash their midriff, the world should gonna take notice!" Well, fandom does, anyway ... and that's just what dreamy Britt Irvin did on the WB's long-running Smallville when she became Stargirl, and she proved she's got the acting skills to boot. The lady has also served time aboard Stargate: SG-1 and the V reboot as well as putting in a wealth of voice acting. Irvin was born on this day in 1984.

A star is born! On this day in 1989, director Philippe Mora delivered Whitley Streiber's Communion to theatres. Although I'm familiar with Whitley's story, I've never seen this film. Here's the plot summary from IMDB.com:

Whitley is abducted and then faces a horrible dilema; was I abducted or am I going mad? He sees a psychiatrist who tries to use hypnotic regression to discover the truth."
For the record:
Let me be perfectly clear on this point for readers - by including Communion as a citation for November 10, I am not casting any doubt whatsever on the Whitley Streiber story. Simply put, this film and its subject matter falls well within the scope of interest for traditional Science Fiction and Fantasy viewers, and this is why I highlight it in this space. (This is also why you'll find occasional mentions of the 1947 Roswell UFO crash.) So back off, haters!
