Chalk up yet one more reflection of my youth spent in front of the television set because on this day back in 1975 I vaguely recall sitting in front of the Boob Tube for the small screen premiere of The Invisible Man! Yes, I was drawn to it for its effects work -- the way most ten-year-old boys were -- and I honestly couldn't tell you anything about its various stories. I do recall it being short-lived -- IMDB.com reports it lasted thirteen episodes -- and here's the series' premise from the same:
"The weekly adventures of Dr. Daniel Westin, an invisible scientist working as an agent for a private thinktank."
"The weekly adventures of Dr. Daniel Westin, an invisible scientist working as an agent for a private thinktank."
In the measure of the man's life, I think it's honestly safe to conclude that cinema legend Orson Welles didn't really do all that much to advance the various causes and/or popularity of Science Fiction. What he did do, however, was show that stories from the realm of SciFi do have some sort of mass appeal when and if they're presently smartly, without taking the intelligence of the audience for granted. Such was the case with his 'controversial' radio adaptation of H.G. Wells' epic, The War of the Worlds.
If you do any measure of reading into the alleged controversy -- whether audience members tuned in late and thought they were experiencing a real invasion of the planet Earth by forces from Mars -- then you'll find some of it was true, some of it was exaggerated, and some of it never quite happened the way it was reported. Still, it takes a storyteller the likes of Welles to accomplish even a measure of controversy in any generation, and the man certainly deserves to be saluted for that.
Welles was born on this day in 1915. Though he's no longer with us, I strongly encourage you to study his works today.

ExtraExtra Alert:
In 2022, I penned a brief opinion piece about how Welles has never quite received the acclaim he deserves for his contributions of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Interested readers can find it right here.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier gets maligned all of the time for being one of the less interesting, less invigorating of the classic Trek movies, but I honestly liked quite of few of the greater character moments contained in it. In fact, I'd argue that the scene involving Dr. McCoy recounting the pain of helping his ailing father pass into the Great Beyond remains one of the most authentic, most poignant vignettes in all of Star Trek. So -- for posterity's sake -- McCoy's father (unnamed in the film) was played by actor Bill Quinn. Though he's no longer with us, Quinn was born on this day in 1912 ... and that cinematic appearance was his last.

IMDB.com reports that Joanna Dunham got her start on the stage but quickly turned to the screen for better opportunity; then when acting roles started to dry up she discovered a love of painting, eventually creating her own gallery. As for her time up in the lights? Genre fans might know her best from appearances in The Invisible Man, Danger Man, The House That Dripped Blood (1971), Space:1999, and Gerry Anderson's The Day After Tomorrow (1976). Though she's no longer with us, Dunham was born on this day in 1936.

While director Tim Burton is given a lot of credit for the look of Gotham City as well as the rest of Batman (1989), such a vision isn't created in a vacuum ... and quite a bit of that aesthetic is owed equally to the effort of Anton Furst. He worked in designing the industrial look of the famed Gotham as well as crafting the big screen incarnation of the beloved Batmobile. His effort was so appreciated that even DC Comics hired the visionary to bring the city to life for the books, though his work was eventually set aside in a 1998 storyline that saw much of Gotham destroyed by an earthquake. Though he's no longer with us, Furst was born on this day in 1944.

Though her career in the entertainment industry lasted only twenty-six screen credits, I suspect fans of a certain era remember the late Hilary Heath quite well. Not long after securing small roles in episodes of The Avengers and The Prisoner, she emerged on the silver screen in a big and memorable way, playing one of the tortured victims aboard American international Pictures' Witchfinder General (1968). Work in somewhat similar fare followed -- The Body Stealers and The Oblong Box (both in 1969), then Cry Of The Banshee (1970). Her last screen role of record was as a guest to the world of Gerry Anderson's Space:1999. Alas, in 2020, the world lost the lovely lady due to complications from the dreaded Coronavirus; but Heath was born on this day in 1945.

My, my, my! Who among us wouldn't be thrilled at the prospect of sharing the silver screen with one of filmdom's most memorable robots? Such was the case for Richard Eyer whose work in The Invisible Boy (1957) certainly put him on the genre map alongside Fantastic Planet's Robby The Robot. Other notable stops for him as an actor include appearances in Invasion U.S.A. (1952), Science Fiction Theatre, and The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad (1958). Eyer was born on this day in 1945.

Gregg Henry is one of those guys who gets tons of work in the entertainment business but never quite seems to become a household name. That's a shame, really, 'cause he's clearly got serious acting chops. Genre fans recall his work from Voyagers!, M.A.N.T.I.S., Star Trek: Insurrection, Star Trek: Enterprise, Dollhouse, and even his cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy. Also, he's played a mean Brigham Young on AMC's western Hells on Wheels for those of you who like that stuff. (I do.) Henry was born on this day in 1952.

Actor Fred Newman does more than act and maybe (maybe) make some funny voices: he's also an award-winning composer for television ... no small feat, indeed. Still, I suppose most folks who read in this space are most excited about his voice, especially considering he brought to life the lovable 'Mogwai' in the Steven Spielberg produced Gremlins (1984). Newman was born on this day in 1952.

ABC TV's Flashforward was a short-lived, single season SciFi television series that promised great potential but never quite delivered on it; however, take a gander at its collected cast list sometime when you have a minute as it somehow attracted some incredible talent. I'm no fan of George Clooney. Then again, I'm no fan of any actor who uses his clout to advance political causes, no matter whether I agree with the cause or not. Honestly, I was never much a fan of Disney's animated Star Wars Rebels, but I was thrilled that its writers plucked one of the greater characters in the broader Star Wars universe -- that of Grand Admiral Thrawn -- from the Expanded Universe and dropped him into the program. She hasn't dabbled in SciFi too much, but she has given us great performances in properties like SeaQuest 2032, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, The Outer Limits, Robocop: Prime Directives (miniseries), Revolution, and The Strain. Science Fiction is not without the element of cheese. In fact, I've long argued that SciFi -- in particular -- has had a unique fascination with the more pulpy themes of genre entertainment. Personally, I was bummed that audiences never even got the chance to see Adrianne Palicki get her time in the spotlight as Wonder Woman. As the story goes, longtime TV auteur David E. Kelley hired her to play the Amazonian princess. They even filmed a pilot. However, the network apparently passed on the gig. Not too sure why. Still, good for her in staying employed: not long after she jumped the DC Universe's ship and boarded Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Ah, Doctor Sleep (2019)! You almost had me under your spell! The sequel to Stephen King's The Shining is a very good distraction for about two-thirds of its length: it's a simmering examination of a Fantasy world that delicately expands what came before in the Stanley Kubrick original, but the final reel left a bad taste in my mouth by reducing what happens at the fateful hotel to a bit of a convenient plot device. Still, one of the best things to come from all of it was a terrific supporting performance by the fetching Emily Alyn Lind. As she matures as an actress, she'll likely be a force to reckon with. She's definitely one to watch! Lind was born on this day in 2002.

In fact, while Wolf is off in outer space, Holmes goes into flashback mode recalling how he found, lost and found the dog again, and this memory jaunt serves to cover the time that Wolf is gone and it is now time for Wolf to return from outer space. But the capsule's recovery area is out in the artic terrain, so Holmes dons his parka, snowshoes, hitches up the raindeer and mushes out to rescue Wolf once again. One can only hope that the edited-out 11 minutes in the American-release showed Wolf gathering up rock samples on the moon."
