What's the very thing that a starship captain most deserves? Why, that would be a star to call his own! And that's precisely what William Shatner received on this day back in 1983 when for his ubiquitous contributions to entertainment history he received his very own star on the Walk of Fame! Congrats, Bill! You're officially a star!
If you've never seen the original BBC adaptation of Quatermass And The Pit from the 1958-1959 season, then you've missed something special. The venerable Anthony Bushell played 'Colonel James Breen' aboard the stellar program. The actor was also gainfully employed in such genre entries as The Ghoul (1933), The Invisible Man, and Danger Man. Though he's no longer with us, Bushell was born on this day in 1904.

With a resume of just over 150 screen roles, you can rest assured that the late Bruce Bennett likely appeared in something for fans of just about everything. As for genre fans? Well, he had a good handful. He can be found putting his talents on best display in such projects as The New Adventures Of Tarzan (1935), Hawk Of The Wilderness (1938), Daredevils Of The Red Circle (1939), The Man With Nine Lives (1940), Science Fiction Theatre, The Cosmic Man (1959), The Alligator People (1959), and The Clones (1973). For those of you wondering, the answer is "no": Raiders Of The Lost Ark is not Science Fiction. However, the above is one of the best photos I can find online for genre actor Pat Roach. (Yes, he was the big guy beating the stuffing out of Indiana Jones under the Nazi flying wing!) In case you missed it, he played another baddie in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and yet even one more in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. SciFi fans know him for appearances in A Clockwork Orange (1971), Unidentified Flying Oddball (1979), Willow (1988), Space Precinct, Kull the Conqueror (1997), and Starhunter. Though he's no longer with us, Roach was born on this day in 1937.

Star Wars certainly gives the 'men behind the mask' plenty of opportunity to be celebrated, but -- in all of Star Wars -- perhaps the man most lovably known amongst die-hard fans is the 'man under the fur': Peter Mayhew. He's played 'Chewbacca' in all of the installments up through Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015), and he's done so to absolute perfection! Though he's no longer with us, Mayhew was born on this day in 1944.

How do you know you've made it in the entertainment industry? Well, one way would be to square off against Conan (as played by Arnold Schwarzenegger), and that's exactly what Grace Jones did in Conan The Destroyer (1984). She also appeared aboard A View To A Kill (1985), Vamp (1986), and Cyber Bandits (1995) to round out her genre credentials. Jones was born on this day in 1948.

Oh, the great Albert Pyun was responsible for so much of the wonderful video schlock of my younger days. So much of what he did was grounded in the realms of the Fantastic; while it may not have been perfect, it definitely had the edge for those of us who enjoy products that color outside the lines just a little bit. He left his imprint on us all with such visions as The Sword And The Sorcerer (1982), Radioactive Dreams (1984), Vicious Lips (1986), Alien From L.A. (1988), Journey To The Center Of The Earth (1988), Cyborg (1989), Captain America (1990), Dollman (1991), Nemesis (1992), Knights (1993), Arcade (1993), Heatseeker (1995), Nemesis 2: Nebula (1995), Adrenalin: Fear The Rush (1996), Nemesis 3: Time Lapse (1996), Omega Doom (1996), Nemesis 4: Death Angel (1996), Sorcerers (1998), Urban Menace (1999), Infection (2005), Aliens Gone Wild (2006), Cool Air (2006), Left For Dead (2007), Road To Hell (2008), Abelar: Tales Of An Ancient Empire (2010), Interstellar Civil War: Shadows Of The Empire (2017), Death Heads: Brain Drain (2018). The greatest thing about being in Star Trek? I would imagine that it makes you a 'rock star' amongst a certain type of people. So imagine what it's like to have even a small role in Star Trek: The Next Generation's "The Inner Light," an hour that's revered to be one of the greatest episodes in Science Fiction ever! Curse you, TV Gods! One program that just did not get the love it deserved during its single season existence was Fox's Almost Human. Essentially, it was admittedly a police procedural, but it was set in the near future with stars Karl Urban and Micheal Ealy making the most unlikely good-cop-bad-cop pairing to come around in some time. In any event, a young Sarah Grey had a small role in the episode titled "Perception," and -- for that -- we're forever thankful. A star is born! If you live long enough then you suspect even an institution as old as the U.S. Navy is going to find itself featured prominently in some SciFi property: lo and behold on this day in 1966 The Navy Vs. The Night Monsters wriggled its way into existence. The feature starred Mamie Van Dorn and Billy Gray, and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"Operation Deep Freeze, a scientific expedition to Antarctica discovers unusual tree specimens. When specimens are shipped out for further study, the trees are accidentally introduced to a south seas Navy base, soon revealing themselves to be killer, acid-secreting monsters that live by night."
For the record:
Well, well, well. Perhaps the film's greatest claim to fame was securing Hollywood starlet and American sex symbol Mamie Van Dorn in a lead role. Folks have to have something to look at, after all. Still, the script was adapted from the Murray Leinster novel "Night Crawlers." For folks unfamiliar with the Hugo-Award-winning Leinster, he was one time referred to as "the Dean of Science Fiction," and if you're interested in knowing a bit more about him and his work you can check out the summary on Wikipedia.org right here.

A star is born! Little known fact: a machete to the face will likely void the warranty on most major brand prescription eyewear! In any event, The Astro-Zombies (aka Space Vampires) first came alive on this day in 1968. This one starred Wendell Corey and John Carradine, and here's the premise as detailed by the reliable IMDB.com:
"The Plan - to build a super human; How? - by murdering innocent convenient victims and using various bits of them; The Result - Creatures on the rampage."
For the record:
Ahem. The Astro-Zombies is another one of those films that is revered for being endlessly bad from start-to-finish. Writer/director Ted V. Mikels trafficked in a lot of cinematic schlock (not necessarily a bad thing), and he even revisited the world of his dreaded Astro-Zombies on other occasions throughout his career. Another interesting bit of trivia is that the film was co-written by Wayne Rogers who would eventually go on to fame in TV's M*A*S*H series.

Directed by John Badham, the SciFi/Thriller starred Matthew Broderick, Dabney Coleman, and Ally Sheedy. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:

- The 1984 Saturn Awards was even more generous, giving the picture four unsung nods (categories of 'Best Supporting Actor,' 'Best Actor,' 'Best Actress,' and 'Best Science Fiction Film') but one trophy ('Best Director').
- Lastly, the film also scored a 1984 Hugo Awards nomination in the category of 'Best Dramatic Presentation.'
A star is born! Who wants another helping, hmm? Gnaw: Food of the Gods 2 crept unexpectedly out of the abyss on this day in 1989. Directed by Damian Lee, the feature starred Paul Coufos, Lisa Schrage, and Real Andrews. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"A growth hormone experiment gets out of hand, when the the resulting giant man-eating rats escape, reaking havoc on the unsuspecting campus. Much blood-letting follows."
For the record:
IMDB.com reports that Gnaw: Food Of The Gods 2 is a "sequel in name only" to 1976's The Food Of The Gods, a film based on a portion of a novel from SciFi's H.G. Wells. Essentially, the sequel merely lifted the idea of 'giant animals' and created an entirely different plot for its characters to explore. And it looks like director Damian Lee went right from this project to directing 1990's Abraxas, Guardian Of The Universe starring Jesse Ventura.

A star is born! On this day in 1992, Alien 3 enjoyed its very first theatrical engagement ever with its silver screen premiere held in Century City, California. Directed by David Fincher, this somewhat controversial installment of the Alien franchise brought back Sigourney Weaver for a kinda/sorta swan song against the dreaded Xenomorph, and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"After her last encounter, Ellen Ripley crash-lands on Fiorina 161, a maximum security prison. When a series of strange and deadly events occur shortly after her arrival, Ripley realizes that she has brought along an unwelcome visitor."
For the record:
Yes, yes, yes! I'm aware that Weaver is back in the next chapter -- Alien: Resurrection (1997) -- but what I meant was that this was the original Ripley as the one in that film is a clone of her. Calm down, haters. Still, Alien 3 took the franchise in a somewhat dark turn as fans didn't quite warm to this particular chapter as the script ended up offing the other survivors of Jim Cameron's Aliens (1986), a development long-time fans couldn't quite get beyond. Still, the motion picture was nominated for an Academy Award for 'Best Visual Effects' and went on to achieve a solid number of other nominations and top prizes. That's certainly no small feat, especially for an adventure many fans feel was a creative misstep.

A star is born! Just about the time you think you've seen every post-Apocalyptic actioner ever produced, you stumble upon a citation for Prison Planet (aka Badlanders) and you realize you've barely scratched the surface of true shlock. This 1992-thriller was released on this day in 1993 in the United States, and here's the summary from IMDB.com:
"In the year 2200 Earth is under the dictatorship of an evil king, with only a band of intrepid rebels to oppose him. Blaine, one of the rebels, gets himself arrested and sent to prison in search of the true ruler, the kings brother. But the prison is protected by a brutal warlord and his equally sadistic warriors, whom Blain must battle if he ever hopes to find truth and justice."
For the record:
I've not stumbled across much information regarding Prison Planet, but unless I miss my guess the film would appear to have been the 'passion project' of cinematographer Armand Gazarian (he's credited with writing, directing, producing, and editing chores on the flick).

Honestly, I'm not one of these people who gets all up in arms over the announcement of new theatrical projects. Generally, I'm the one urging caution, as we've all had our dreams dashed when some major motion picture debacle brings us tumbling back to Earth. Still, when George Lucas announced that he was finally making the Prequel Trilogy, I probably did get more excited than usual. As much as those first images and trailers promised something great, I thought the best idea was the one that worked simply: the above photo of a young Anakin Skywalker projecting the shadow of something far more ominous that was in store for him and a galaxy far, far away ...
