I know, I know, I know: anyone with half-a-brain pretty much hated 1995's water-logged Waterworld for any number of reasons ... but you know what? I actually thought it was a lot of fun. I think it helps to think of the Kevin Costner flick as being nothing more than an Apocalyptic-themed 'riff' on the classic spaghetti Western. You approach it like that, and it really isn't half bad. In any event, Dennis Hopper certainly approached playing 'Deacon' -- the man who would rule what was left of the Earth -- with some stylish flair.
Other notable flights of fancy include visits to such entities as The Twilight Zone, Queen Of Blood (1966), Reborn (1981), My Science Project (1985), Super Mario Bros. (1993), Witch Hunt (1994), Space Truckers (1996), Tycus (1999), The Apostate (2000), The Spreading Ground (2000), Jason And The Argonauts, Firestarter: Rekindled, Unspeakable (2002), Flatland, The Crow: Wicked Prayer (2005), Land Of The Dead (2005), House Of 9 (2005), Hoboken Hollow (2006), and Memory (2006).
Though he's no longer with us, Hopper was born on this day in 1936.

For the record:
Now, I realize that sometimes a work -- especially one as maligned as much as Waterworld has been -- might be a bit dubious, but I'd be remiss in my duties here if I failed to mention that Hopper's work in the singular flick won him the 1996 Razzie Award for 'Worst Supporting Actor.' Still, that minor blemish should never take away from the man's clout, as he remains one of the more celebrated Thespians of his generation.
ExtraExtra Alert:
In 2023, I received an all-new release of Waterworld (1995) via a distributor in exchange for a review on SciFiHistory.Net. Interested in my thoughts on the picture? Readers can find them right here.

Odds are that if an actor or actress has ever captained a spaceship then that person will likely get a mention on these pages. Such is the case with screen veteran (and Twin Peaks alum) Grace Zabriskie. In 1981, she captained 'The Quest' as part of the Roger Corman space schlock Galaxy of Terror! A quick review of her professional profile indicates that she was also gainfully employed in such enterprises as Tales Of The Gold Monkey, Leonard Part 6 (1987), Pulse Pounders (1988), Tales From The Crypt, Megaville (1990), Child's Play 2 (1990), Servants Of Twilight (1991), Ferngully: The Last Rainforest (1992), The Burning Zone, The Devil's Child (1997), Armageddon (1998), They Crawl (2001), The Glow (2002), Charmed, The Grudge (2004), Medium, Outcast, and Cryptozoo (2021). Early in her professional career and in the guise of an unnamed cave girl, Deborah Dutch paid a welcome visit to the Fantasy-themed Dinosaur Island (1994). Veteran character actor Bill Paxton practically stole the show out from under the Aliens (1986). His foul-mouthed 'Hudson' never let a moment of stress pass by without a smart remark, and he even went down fighting in the end. Great role for the man! Also, he revised his military acumen to play 'Master Sergeant Farrell' in 2014's spectacular Edge of Tomorrow with Tom Cruise.
Thankfully, he was really no stranger to the realms of the Fantastic. His profession resume topped out at just under 100 different screen roles; and those of record (for genre fans) include such vehicles as Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981); Mortuary (1982); Deadly Lessons (1983); The Terminator (1984); Weird Science (1985); Near Dark (1987); Slipstream (1989); Brain Dead (1990); Predator 2 (1990); The Vagrant (1992); Monolith (1993); Future Shock (1994); Mighty Joe Young (1998); Frailty (2001); Spy Kids 2: Island Of Lost Dreams (2002); Spy Kids 3: Game Over (2003); Thunderbirds (2004); The Colony (2013); and Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Though he's no longer with us, Paxton was born on this day in 1955.

For the record:
It should go without saying that Paxton was a delight with genre fans, and his track record at the Saturn Awards alone shows that he was nominated (in various categories) at incredible six times, twice taking home trophies and having to settle for nominations alone four times. That is impressive, indeed.

1995's "Learning Curve" episode of Star Trek: Voyager was not a great season finale moment; but I've read somewheres that the installment was never intended to be the season finale but somehow got plugged in there as producers decided to withhold subsequent episodes for Season 2. Still, I thought it was an uncharacteristically good filler hour (I've said Voyager's smaller episodes weren't my favorites) because it actually fleshed out a handful of supporting players in a worthwhile fashion. Armand Schultz was among the crewmembers, and it would've been grand to see him back (along with his shipmates). The actor has also lent his voice to several characters within the greater universe of Star Wars video games. Schultz was born on this day in 1959.

I have nothing but sincere respect for the bit players who toil away in small roles in even the biggest genre film; they get the chance to play in so many universes, and not everyone can say that. Today's case in point: Corey Johnson. He's a familiar face who has turned up in small roles from The Mummy (1999), Hellboy (2004), Doctor Who, A Sound Of Thunder (2005), Universal Soldier: Regeneration (2009), The Fourth Kind (2009), X-Men: First Class (2011), and Ex Machina (2015). Perhaps it's best to just point out that the film -- despite its flaws -- was nominated for the Best Dramatic Presentation for the 1975 Hugo Awards.

"Armin is getting too old for his nightlife habits and the woman he likes. He's not really happy, but can't picture living a different life. One morning he wakes up: the world looks the same as always, but mankind has disappeared."
For the record:
I have not seen In My Room. It's garnered a solid handful of award nominations -- something which leads me to believe I probably should see it -- but that typically doesn't mean much when one is dealing with art-house style Science Fiction. Often times I've found that critics love the artsy SciFi flick, but audiences don't connect with it on an emotional level. From the reviews I've read, this seems to be the case. I'll certainly update here if I learn otherwise.
