It all began right here: on this day in 1989, the fondly-remembered Quantum Leap enjoyed its small screen premiere with a two-part outing introducing audiences to time-travelling Sam Beckett and his quirkly holographic contact from the future, Al. The first half put Sam in the body of a test pilot whose fate was tied closely to the crash of a secret flight, and the second half had him receiving wild pitches in a minor league baseball game while trying to "phone home" a dire warning to Sam's own father. Priceless. Here's the series' premise as provided by IMDB.com:
"During a government experiment into time travel, a scientist finds himself trapped in the past, "leaping" into the bodies of different people on a regular basis and sorting out their problems whilst trying to get back home to his own time."

Well, well, well ... I guess no matter how far you travel, you're always just a stone's throw away from ... The Outer Limits. On this day in 1995, television audiences in the United States and Canada were treated to another incarnation of the SciFi/Fantasy anthology series, and here's the premise as provided by IMDB.com:
"A modern revival of the classic science fiction horror anthology show The Outer Limits (1963). Episodes often have twist-endings and involve aliens. Sometimes, a story from one episode continues in a later episode."
For the record:
The 1995-2002 run of The Outer Limits received an incredible number of awards and nominations during its time entertaining audiences with its Science Fiction and Fantasy dramas. In 1996, The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films awarded it the 'Best Genre Television Series,' an honor it won again in 1997 and 1998. (It had to settle with being nominated only for years 1999, 2000, and 2001, no small feat either.)

Trust me when I say that there's plenty of debate about just when the BBC first aired the mildly re-imagined version of Doctor Who. I've endured many debates with the folks on Twitter about this, but here's my skinny: I try -- whenever possible -- to stick to the version of events as detailed by IMDB.com. I "get" that those dates may not jive with when the BBC aired the shows originally, but for the sake of consistency I'm going with those. So -- in that respect -- the show began again on this day in 2005 with the airing of "Rose." Here's the series' premise as provided by IMDB.com:
"The further adventures in time and space of the alien adventurer known as the Doctor and their companions from planet Earth."

Those of us who grew up with the original Star Trek know firsthand how important Leonard Nimoy is to our beloved franchise. As the half-human half-Vulcan sciences officer Mr. Spock, Leonard brought a special gravitas to the role, showing audiences even an alien 'halfbreed' had something that resembled humanity. It's no wonder that JJ Abrams utilized the character of Spock in his 2009 reboot of the motion picture franchise. Though he's no longer with us, Nimoy was born on this day in 1931.

There are those of us who still marvel at what Nimoy was able to accomplish in bringing perhaps the signature alien hybrid to life across so many decades. The man who was both 'Spock' and 'Not Spock' -- depending upon which book of his you read -- was the recipient of much praise, and I'm happy to mention a few below.
ExtraExtra Alert:
For those interested in this sort of thing, I penned a few words regarding Nimoy's passing back in 2015, and they're available for your consumption right here.

- During Star Trek's original run on television, Nimoy was nominated for the 'Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Drama' each season.
- While taking home three separate Saturn Awards, he enjoyed nominations for up to seven of them, recognizing his work both as an actor as well as a director in Star Trek and beyond.
- He was nominated for an incredible three Hugo Awards (1985, 1987, and 1992) for his work in Star Trek's III, IV, and VI.
- Lastly, in 2021, his character of 'Mr. Spock' which he had played so long was inducted into the Online Film & Television Association's Hall Of Fame.

Alan Arkin remains one of my all-time favorite actors. Whenever he performs, he tends to have a perfect blend of sardonicism in everything he does, a voice of authority that never takes itself too seriously. SciFi fans probably know him best from his work in Gattaca. Though he's no longer with us, Arkin was born on this day in 1934.

At its core, Alien Nation is little more than the standard police procedural -- along with the 'buddy cop' seasoning -- with an alien race thrown in for good measure. Cinema tough guy James Caan always seemed a bit miscast to my tastes, but he certainly seemed to be having as much fun with the story as did everyone else in it. While his name may not be one of the biggest in genre entertainment, he was definitely no stranger to it; his resume boasts appearances aboard such projects as Countdown (1967), Get Smart, Rollerball (1975), Dick Tracy (1990), Misery (1990), Lathe Of Heaven (2002), Elf (2003), and Sicilian Vampire (2015). Though he's no longer with us, Caan was born on this day in 1940.

1975's The Stepford Wives never quite gets the respect it deserves (except from purists like myself). The story of a town filled with beautiful women doting over their married men is arguably locked into a certain generation's mindset, and thus it's kinda/sorta lost to history. In any event, the lovely Judith Baldwin played one of the lovely automations perfectly, and Baldwin was born on this day in 1946.

I've learned that there's an entire subset of SciFi fans who insist 'Apocalypse Dramas' have nothing to do with Science Fiction. While that may be right, I tend to disagree. In any event, Jennifer Grey had the time of her life participating in Red Dawn (1984), a 'what if' scenario if ever there were. And -- with a face like that -- nobody puts baby in a corner. Not SciFi enough for you? Then don't forget her face provided the voice aboard the English-language version of Gandahar, a much revered French Fantasy animation. Grey was born on this day in 1960.
