Who would Flash Gordon be without his Dale Arden? Jean Rogers played the lovely damsel-in-distress in 1936's Flash Gordon and again in 1938's Flash Gordon Goes To Mars. (She was replaced by another woman for the third largely because both she and the studio wanted to move her beyond roles in serials, of which she'd had a few.) Though one of the best space princesses is no longer with us, Rogers was born on this day in 1916.

Patrick Troughton was only the second man to play the role of the Doctor in the BBC's very own SciFi classic serial, Doctor Who, and he certainly did what he could to make his performance singular. But that work is far from his only credit, and he paid visits to such other properties as Doomwatch, Out Of The Unknown, Frankenstein And The Monster From Hell (1974), The Omen (1976), Space:1999, Sinbad And The Eye Of The Tiger (1977), and Knights Of God. Though he's no longer with us, Troughton was born on this day in 1920.

Though actor John Copage only enjoyed a single visit to the world of the original Star Trek -- and, even then, in a largely background capacity -- he re-upped for service when Star Trek: The Next Generation rolled onto small screens. In that second tour of duty, he squeezed himself -- again, in a largely background capacity -- into twenty different episodes. Well done, good sir! Many of you are likely unfamiliar with the name of John Keel. Basically, Keel was an investigative journalist who focused in his considerable intellect on understanding subject matter best identified as 'X-Files' material. He penned the original non-fiction book upon which The Mothman Prophecies was based (FYI: if you liked the film, it's a vastly more interesting book!) and has a few other paranormal tomes to his name. Though he's no longer with us, Keel was born on this day in 1930.

Hers was the voice of Lady Penelope for one of the seminal programs of my youth: the glorious Thunderbirds! Along with her husband (of the time) Gerry, Sylvia Anderson wrote and produced some of the most imaginative children's and adult's programming for a generation, bringing to life such franchises as Supercar, Fireball XL5, Stingray, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, Joe 90, UFO, and Space:1999. There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that only the most serious Star Trek enthusiasts recognize the name of DC Fontana. During the classic SciFi series' original run, Fontana worked as Roddenberry's secretary, often times putting in credited and uncredited work doctoring scripts for telecast. At a time when there was little or no Trek on the airwaves, it was DC who toiled tirelessly behind-the-scenes to keep the franchise alive. Though she's no longer with us, Fontana was born on this day in 1939.

Dark City (1998) is one of those flicks I just don't understand. I saw it first theatrically, and it just confused me. Then a director's cut came out on DVD, and I took it in once more. Still nothing. I love it's grim and moody atmosphere, but I just get lost in what it's really all supposed to be about. In any event, the venerable Richard O'Brien played the delicious Mr. Hand in it, and I am thankful for that. O'Brien was born on this day in 1942.

Wow. I imagine that it would've been pretty hard to play a Klingon under all that make-up and costuming, but talent like Robert O'Reilly sure made it look easy. He played Gowron, who started out on Star Trek: The Next Generation but graduated into a much bigger performance on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. That scowl was one that could move entire world into battle, and O'Reilly did his adopted homeworld proud. Lastly, can I just add that it's precisely because of the great work by stars like O'Reilly that Paramount has really "missed the boat" by failing to greenlight a 'Star Trek: Klingon Empire' series. He was born on this day back in 1950.

Yes, it gave them a franchise in the broader scheme of things, but it's an enduring property that continues to produce iterations in film, television, and print which give fans more to consume, if not think about. Like that unstoppable machine of the title, the franchise refuses to go down for the fight, and I suspect we'll see more of the same in the years ahead.

On this day in 1994 (in Russia and the Ukraine), Aliens delivered a knock-out punch to those pesky Xenomorphs. Written (in part) and directed by James Cameron, the SciFi/Thriller starred Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, and Paul Reiser; and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"Fifty-seven years after surviving an apocalyptic attack aboard her space vessel by merciless space creatures, Officer Ripley awakens from hyper-sleep and tries to warn anyone who will listen about the predators."
For the record:
Simply put, Aliens was then and remains today nothing short of phenomenal. While the original established the property, I'd argue that it took the sequel to firmly establish it as a proper Science Fiction franchise. Multiple films have explored the growing mythology behind the Xenomorphs, and 20th Century Fox even paired the aliens up with the Predator for a picture or two. Still, Aliens won the Oscars for 'Best Sound Editing' and 'Best Special Effects' at the 1987 Academy Awards, and the picture even garnered an acting nomination for Weaver -- a rarity for a SciFi film.

According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"This movie is based on a novel of Tiziano Sclavi, and it always reflects the "sclavian philosophy" diffused by the most successful comics in Italy: Dylan Dog, the detective of the nightmare. There is the duality between love and dead (in Italian "dellamore" means "of love" and "dellamorte" means "of death"), a duality that Dellamorte feels in a really hard way. He is the guardian of the cemetery of Buffalora, a little town in the north of Italy, in which, we don't know why, corpses rise from tombs and Dellamorte has to destroy them. Dellamorte seems not to ask to himself why this happen, he shoots and loves. But at the end he wants to leave Buffalora."

Star Trek: The Next Generation's season two adventure titled "The Royale" is oft times cited (deservedly) as one of the worst hours of Star Trek for any incarnation.
