Though he got his start as an actor (and continued to do so throughout his career in entertainment), Gene Nelson quickly turned his interests at directing into reality. Though he's no longer with us, Nelson was born on this day in 1920.

Hollywood heavyweight (and screen heavy!) William Smith has an incredible career that's reasonably shy of three hundred different screen credits. Besides acting, he's also kept himself in incredible shape, garnering fitness accolades and even a few titles here and there. Fans 'round these parts might recognize him from work aboard Atlantis: The Lost Continent (1961), Batman, Grave Of The Vampire (1972), The Six Million Dollar Man, Planet Of The Apes, Kolchak: The Night Stalker, Logan's Run, Buck Rogers In The 25th Century, Conan The Barbarian (1982), Knight Rider, Red Dawn (1984), Airwolf, The Twilight Zone, Hell Comes To Frogtown (1988), Empire Of Ash III (1989), Cybernator (1991), and a host of other curious big and small screen oddities. Veteran character actor R. Lee Ermey pretty much has one character in his repertoire -- that of a blisteringly mad but horrifically efficient drill sergeant -- but what a character indeed! He's the kind of guy you wouldn't want to make angry, that's for sure, and he's appeared in hundreds of productions, all using the same basic shtick. He's shown above in one of my favorite TV shows from the 90's -- Space: Above & Beyond -- where he appeared briefly. Join me in wishing Mr. Ermey a Happy Birthday! Though he's no longer with us, Ermey was born on this day in 1944.

Ahem. I've tried watching Star Trek: Discovery; but as an old school Trek enthusiast the show seems so far away from the original program that it's almost the anti-Star Trek. Though I thoroughly love time travel dramas, I've only made it through Continuum's pilot episode: it all seemed a bit too sugary for my tastes. Still, I appreciate hard work, and Michelle Harrison has enjoyed a recurring role on Syfy's yarn about a cop from tomorrow fighting for justice on the streets of today. This lovely lady has also booked appearances on First Wave, Andromeda, Poltergeist: The Legacy, Stargate: SG-1, The Outer Limits, Stephen King's Dead Zone, The Twilight Zone, Paycheck, Tru Calling, Fringe, V, Supernatural, Eureka, SGU Stargate Universe, and The Flash. A star is born ... and can you get any more 'fantastical' than this? On this day in 1910 (in the U.S.), The Wizard Of Oz delighted audiences of the silent film era. Adapted for the screen from the L. Frank Baum classic and directed by Otis Turner, the 13-minute flick starred Bebe Daniels, Hobart Bosworth, and Eugenie Besserer. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"Chased off by the antics of Hank the Mule, Dorothy ends up in her cornfield, where she realizes her family's Scarecrow is alive. She helps him down and he takes a tumble on the turnstyle. A cyclone soon arrives and leaves Dorothy, Scarecrow, Toto and Hank spinning around on a haystack, with Imogene the Cow flying soon after. Soon after their arrival, the Wizard of Oz issues a public decree that he is a humbug, to make sure no one ever finds out. Glinda pops up out of the background and transforms Toto into a man in a bulldog suit to serve as a better protector for Dorothy. Then they encounter the Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion, and Eureka. Nevertheless, she is captured by Momba, the Wicked Witch of the West (suggesting Baum thought the other witches were Mombe, Mombo, and Mombu, in keeping with the council in _Queen Zixi of Ix_) and her flying lizards and soldiers. Dorothy defeats Momba, and they arrive at the Emerald City just in time for the Wizard's going away party."

Under pressure of having his crew crushed to death Quark reveals that "It" is located on the asteroid Rumbar; but Quark is only bluffing! To avoid Zorgon finding out about the bluff the crew decides to have Ficus make love to Libido, however, Ficus is confused and instead decides to pollinate with Libido. But luck is not with them, as Zorgon catches Ficus and Libido in the act of pollination and he decides that Quark and his crew are must to die; Ficus to be cut in half by a laser and the Betty's to be crushed in a compactor. Zorgon is about to find "It" but what terrible fate could be next for the crew and the United Galaxy?"
