Those who've followed George Lucas beyond just the ordinary know that he has a long-established affinity for more cerebral ideas in film-making. Thus, a while before he dreamed up taking audiences to a galaxy far, far away, Lucas dabbled with what he felt were more relevant themes in SciFi. His THX 1138 starred Robert Duvall and Donald Pleasance, and it took place in our own galaxy, far off in the 25th century, where a male and a female rebelled against their own rigidly controlled society. The film first debuted on this day in 1971. Here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"In the 25th century, a time when people have designations instead of names, a man, THX 1138, and a woman, LUH 3417, rebel against their rigidly-controlled society."
For the record:
I recently had the good fortune of viewing the Director's Cut of the film; and, of course, I found it very interesting. (Previous to that, I'd only seen sections of the film, not the whole release.) And it was nominated for the 1972 'Best Dramatic Presentation' Hugo Award.

SciFi writer Christopher Anvil is the pseudonym of American author Harry Christopher Crosby. Though he's no longer with us, Anvil was born on this day in 1925.

1986's Defenders Of The Earth was a short-lived but popular animated program that's largely remembered by audience members of its day for taking a handful of 'second tier' heroes -- Flash Gordon, The Phantom, Mandrake The Magician, etc. -- and combining them into one fabulous strike force. Actor William Callaway was given the daunting task of bringing to life 'Ming The Merciless' for the show. He's also provided voicework in such properties as Sealab 2020, Challenge Of The Superfriends, The World's Greatest SuperFriends, The Incredible Hulk, and InHumanoids. Ahem. Don't ask me how I know this, but Playmen Magazine was presumably the Italian equivalent to America's popular Playboy Magazine ... and the lovely actress Carole Andre made an appearance within its pages ... Call me naive, but I hadn't realized what a polarizing character River Song can be with so many enthusiastic Whoovians. I guess the scuttlebutt all boils down to on some occasions they've liked what she's brought to the universe of Doctor Who, while in other cases they've loathed it. I guess I've never had any problems with her being part of the adventures in any great measure, and maybe that's because I enjoy actress Alex Kingston's work so much. Torchwood is another one of those instances wherein I tend to disagree modestly with much of sci-fi-fandom. The show is charming enough -- and it certainly posits some interesting storylines, situations, and characters -- but I preferred Capt. Jack Harkness's character when he was part and parcel of Doctor Who premises: I just haven't much cared for him out on his own. Now, I can't speak to whatever fate befell Ali Faulkner's character in the wider Twilight Saga of films -- sorry, kids, but I haven't seen them -- but generally speaking ladies as lovely as her aren't destined for great things when they're being manhandled the way she is here. Let's hope she survived. But has the actress had other forays into our realms? It would seem so as fans can appreciate her goodness aboard Humans Vs Zombies (2011), Bad Kids Go To Hell (2012), Butcher Boys (2012), and The Secret Village (2013). As much as Paramount Pictures hates the fans picking about every little piece of the JJ Abrams' flavored Star Trek reboot, I'll have to admit there are some charming elements to it. One of those is Anton Yelchin's portrayal of Ensign Pavel Chekov. No, it may not be perfect -- much ado can be made about the sub-par (not "pon farr") writing of the characters -- but, for all of those blemishes, Yelchin does do a pretty solid job with Chekov's youthful enthusiasm and a miserable accent. Go figure! Though he's no longer with us, Yelchin -- who also had a curious role in Terminator Salvation -- was born on this day in 1989.

Sigh. The saddest thing about the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy is that its storytellers could never quite decide how much backstory any of its new characters actually needed, so a lot of time was wasted -- across three films -- defining and redefining the origins of the principles. For example, actress Jodie Comer was cast to play the "is she or isn't she" mother to the central Rey Palpatine (aka Rey Skywalker), and methinks she'll never have an action figure in the entire line-up. Truly a shame. Comer was born on this day in 1993.

The Martians are coming! The Martians are coming! On this day in 1954 (in Australia), the original The War Of The Worlds classic invaded theatrically. Directed by Byron Haskin, the feature starred Gene Barry, Ann Robinson, Les Tremayne, and others in a cinematic adaptation of the H.G. Wells' novel, and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"The residents of a small town in California are excited when a flaming meteor lands in the hills. Their joy is tempered somewhat when they discover that it has passengers who are not very friendly."
For the record:
Those who follow Science Fiction and Fantasy are well aware of The War Of The Worlds importance in the genre as it's been revisited countless times. There have been multiple film and television incarnations. As for the original? It won the 1954 Academy Award for 'Best Special Effects.' It won the 1954 Hugo Award for 'Best Dramatic Presentation.' And in 2011 it was inducted into the National Film Registry so that it can be preserved for the ages.

On this day in 1974 (in Madrid), the 1969-produced Latitude Zero made its mark cinematically. Directed by Ishiro Honda, the SciFi/Fantasy feature starred Joseph Cotten, Akira Takarada, Cesar Romero, and others. Here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"A journalist is saved by a giant submarine captained by a 200 year old man who takes him to an underwater paradise city where no one ages. That's when monsters and mutants sent by the captain's rival, a 200 year old scientist, attack."
For the record:
From what I've read (on IMDB.com), it looks like Latitude Zero was originally intended to be an American and Japanese co-production, except the American backers declared bankrupty just as production was set to begin. Toho Studios opted to go ahead and finance the picture on their own. The film's screenwriter -- Ted Sherdeman -- based the script on stories he had crafted under the name 'Latitude Zero' for a popular radio serial of the same name. And Sherdeman has a solid screenwriting record, having penned scripts for such properties as Them! (1954), Men Into Space, My Favorite Martian, and Bewitched.

On this day back in 2011, the SciFi/Drama Battle Los Angeles premiered theatrically in wide release in the United States and beyond. Personally, I liked it quite a bit, though I know some genre fans kinda/sorta nitpicked the hell out of it. Whatever. Written by Christopher Bertolini and directed by Jonathan Liebesman, the SciFi/Actioner starred Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan, and others. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"Los Angeles and other cities around the world are being bombarded by meteors that seem to be slowing down once they hit the earth's atmosphere. The earth is suddenly being invaded by space aliens that have landed off the shore of LA, and who begin killing everybody along the beach. The military is ordered into action. Marine Staff Sergeant Nantz (Aaron Eckhart), who was about to retire, is reassigned to a new platoon. The platoon, flown by chopper to the forward operating base at Santa Monica Airport, is being led by a new 2nd Lt. Martinez (Ramon Rodriguez). They are sent on a mission to rescue some civilians who are trapped at the police station within alien territory. They only have 3 hours to complete their mission and get out before the Air Force bombs that zone."
For the record:
The film enjoyed a handful of screen nominations as well as a single win (for composer Brian Tyler). Talk was strong for some time promising a sequel, but to date there's been no follow-up.
