On this day in 2008 (in the U.S.), HBO sunk their network fangs pretty deep into the realms of the Fantastic when it premiered the Alan Ball-produced adaptation of True Blood.  Based on the books by Charlaine Harris, the show starred Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Sam Trammell, Ryan Kwanten, Chris Bauer, and many, many others.

Here's the series' premise as provided by our friends at IMDB.com:

"Telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse encounters a strange new supernatural world when she meets the mysterious Bill Compton, a southern Louisiana gentleman and vampire."

From Google.com:

True Blood is an HBO dark fantasy and horror drama series that aired for seven seasons from September 7, 2008, to August 24, 2014, spanning 80 episodes. [1]  Created by Alan Ball, the show is based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries novels by Charlaine Harris. [2, 3]

Premise and Setting

  • The show takes place in the fictional small town of Bon Temps, Louisiana.
  • It is set in a modern world where vampires have revealed their existence to humans ("come out of the coffin") after the creation of a synthetic Japanese blood brand called Tru Blood.
  • The narrative follows Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a kind-hearted but isolated telepathic waitress.
  • Her life changes when she meets Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a 173-year-old southern vampire. [2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]

Key Themes and Lore

  • The series blends Southern Gothic atmosphere, romance, explicit horror, mystery, and political satire.
  • As the seasons progress, the lore expands far beyond vampires to include shapeshifters, werewolves, witches, fairies, and panthers.
  • It uses its supernatural elements as an allegory for civil rights, discrimination, and religious fanaticism in modern American society.
  • Key fan-favorite characters include the ancient Viking vampire sheriff Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård) and the fierce, loyal short-order cook Lafayette Reynolds (Nelsan Ellis). [3, 7, 8]
