CBS's broadcast television adaptation of Stephen King's Under The Dome was one of those programs that didn't quite strike a chord with me. I turned in to the pilot episode (it premiered on this day back in 2013), and I was just underwhelmed. As tends to happen, performances were all quite good, and production qualities were solid ... but I wasn't bitten by the King 'what if' scenario as deeply as I had been with others, so I tuned it out. In any event, I'm told by fans that it improved greatly as it went along -- maybe I'll check it out via streaming at some point -- though I believe I've read that ardent fans weren't all that thrilled with the finale. Sadly, that happens more often than not in genre projects.
On this day in 1989, Star Trek: The Next Generation fans met one of the most gorgeous Klingons in all the known galaxy when K'Ehleyr (played by the incomparable Suzie Plakson) entered the modern day mythology. The hour that premiered on this day in TV syndication was titled "The Emissary," and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"The Enterprise is ordered to proceed to an emergency rendezvous to collect a special envoy who is traveling from Starbase 153 to meet them. They are given no information about the nature of the emergency, just that they will be briefed by the emissary on arrival. She is K'Ehlyar, a Klingon who has been sent to deal with a Klingon ship, the T'Ong, that has been found in deep space with a crew in long term stasis. They pre-date the current peaceful co-existence Between the Federation and Klingon Empire and as far as they are concerned, the Klingon warriors aboard the T'Ong are still at war with the humans. Worf has a solution to dealing with with the warriors. Meanwhile, it appears that K'Ehlyer - who is half human - has a history and perhaps at one time a romance, with Lt. Worf."
So -- with honor -- may I be the first to say: "Hubba hubba!"

Argh. It's kinda/sorta sad what we do to old actors in this country. Once they're a bit 'long in the tooth' and have lost their looks, perhaps the best Hollywood can do is rustle up roles in some Science Fiction or Fantasy franchise wherein they can play victims who get eaten alive. Maybe that's an allegory for the entire entertainment industry, no? Well, think what you may, but I always thought Jack Carter was funny. Genre fans might know him from work aboard Tales Of Tomorrow, Batman, The Resurrection Of Zachary Wheeler (1971), Beyond Westworld, Alligator (1980), Amazing Stories, Tales From The Darkside, Cyber-C.H.I.C. (1990), Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman, Time Trax, and 3rd Rock From The Sun. Though he's no longer with us, Carter was born on this day in 1922.

Peter Weller. Peter frakkin' Weller. RoboCop (1987) is a brilliant SciFi satire that deftly blends biting comedy and action, but the crimefighter isn't without his emotional core ... and that was provided by veteran character actor Peter Weller. Those who follow his work know that he also had a great role in Odyssey 5, 1995's Screamers, and (of course) Star Trek Into Darkness. Weller was born on this day in 1947.

And talk about a cosmic coincidence! It's exceedingly rare for us to experience a legitimate two-fer in the history of Sci-Fi, but -- saints be praised! -- Peter Weller's co-star and screen partner from the aforementioned RoboCop -- none other than actress Nancy Allen -- also celebrates her birthday on June 24. She was born in 1950. Go get 'em, partners!

I kid you not: I was contacted by an actor (not the lovely Jensen Daggett who is featured in this space) about why I would consider anything associated with ALF and/or its Project: ALF (1996) telefilm Science Fiction. I replied with, "Are you kidding me? It's A.L.F. -- Alien Life Form! It's right in the title!" I remember writing about Minka Kelly's appearance aboard Fox TV's Almost Human during the 2013 TV season. I said at that time that she was one of the weakest links in the cast, showing up basically to hit her marks and look pretty. Even though I've been assured that the program improves dramatically after Season 1, I gave up on Syfy's Defiance with its first season finale. I guess I expected more as the program came from the mind of Rockne O'Bannon, the genius behind Farscape. On this day in 1983, Twilight Zone - The Movie premiered theatrically. Based on the popular television show from TV's golden age, the film pulled together four segments with horror, fantasy, and science fiction elements are strung them together for unsuspecting audiences. Plus, the flick features a terrific little cameo-style set-up by Dan Aykroyd. "Do you wanna see something really scary?" Here's the plot summary from IMDB.com:
"Prologue: a driver has a big surprise with his passenger. Segment 1 ("Time Out"): a bigot hates Jews, Black and Asians. One day he will live in World War II, be hunted down by the KKK and get attacked in the Vietnam War and feel the effects of his hatred. Segment 2 ("Kick the Can"): In a nursing home, the elder inhabitants learn that their minds can keep them young. Segment 3 ("It's a Good Life"): a traveler hits a boy in a bicycle with her car and takes the boy home. Soon she learns that the powerful boy brought her home indeed. Segment 4 ("Nightmare at 20,000 feet"): a writer is scared to fly and soon he sees a monstrous creature destroying the airplane engines during a stormy night."
For the record:
It's hard to say why the Twilight Zone movie isn't remembered by a wider audience years later, but I suspect that the negative press surrounding the death of actor Vic Morrow and two children (from the Segment 1 story) certainly had an impact on Hollywood and beyond. It did score some impressive nominations (1984 Saturn Award nominee for 'Best Horror Film;' 1984 Fantasporto nominee for 'Best Film;' etc.), but its only win of record (that I'm award of) is John Lithgow securing the 1984 Saturn Award for 'Best Supporting Actor' in what was the film's biggest performance.

A star is born! I love most of Mel Brooks' films, but -- for some reason -- Spaceballs just never struck a chord with me the way it did most sci-fi fans. I couldn't say why specifically; I think that I pretty much felt a bit let down by the man who'd brought us so many other stellar comedies, and this one felt a bit too easy for me. Whatever the case, it first premiered theatrically on this day in 1987. Here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:

For the record:
Ahem. The Mel Brooks' comedy did win the 1987 'Worst Picture' Award from The Stinkers Bad Movie Awards ... so that's got to count for something, eh?

Here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"RoboCop saves the day once more. This time the half man/half robot takes on ruthless developers who want to evict some people on "their" land."
For the record:
I wouldn't exactly say that 'the third times a charm' for RoboCop as audiences and critics were largely disappointed with this outing. Not only did we lose the greater Peter Weller in the central role, but the script also kills off Murphy's parter, Anne Lewis (Nancy Allen). Still, the Academy Of Science Fiction, Fantasy, And Horror Films gave it nominations (in 1994) for 'Best Supporting Actress' and 'Best Science Fiction Film.'

The honest truth is that sequels rarely improve upon originals, and such was the case with 2016's relatively tepid Independence Day: Resurgence. (It premiered in wide release in a whole host of countries on this day in 2016.) "Two decades after the first Independence Day invasion, Earth is faced with a new extra-Solar threat. But will mankind's new space defenses be enough?"
ExtraExtra Alert:
