In all fairness, I've heard about The Collector, but this is another one that just slipped past my regular viewing habits perhaps for any number of legitimate reasons. That won't keep me from showcasing it in this space, nonetheless, as the program premiered on this day back in 2004. Here's what IMDB.com had to say about it:
"Centuries ago, Morgan Pym made a deal with Satan: his soul, in exchange for 10 years with his one true love. After she died, Morgan - desperate to avoid eternity in hell - agreed to become a Collector, charged with collecting souls from those who'd made deals with Satan. Morgan's deal with the devil includes one additional clause: Morgan is allowed 48 hours with each client to try and redeem them before they are condemned to hell..."

Sorry, folks, but as of today's date I've yet to see a single installment of the SciFi property Stitchers which premiered on this day back in 2015. I have read some stuff about it -- much of it complimentary -- so I do hope to eventually get around to it. And -- dare I say? -- the premise of using science to step into the minds of the deceased certainly sounds intriguing, and I can only hope that its writers and runners did the technique justice. It lasted for a few seasons -- which is more than some shows get -- and I suspect its fans will be forever thankful for that. Here's the series' premise from IMDB.com:
"A young woman is recruited into a secret government agency to be 'stitched' into the minds of the recently deceased, using their memories to investigate murders."

As an author and editor, Lester del Rey contributed greatly to the Golden Age of Science Fiction, contributing greatly to the genre with work on such magazines as Space SF, Fantasy Fiction, Rocket Stories, and Science Fiction Forum. Though she thought she was initially bound to be an opera singer, Florence Marly changed course for our benefit and went the way of the screen actress after being discovered by a French film director. Leaving behind a resume of thirty-five different roles, she's perhaps best known by genre fans from work in such properties as Krakakit (1948), The Twilight Zone, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Queen Of Blood (1966), Doctor Death: Seeker Of Souls (1973), and The Astrologer (1976). The modern era of Superhero filmmaking owes a debt to producer Alexander Salkind for he was there back in the 1970's to kinda/sorta set the gold standard: he and his son Ilya delivered Superman (1978) to the silver screen in all its glory for Warner Bros. Salkind continued to toil away on the DC Comics property as producer of Superman II (1980), Superman III (1983), and the television series Superboy which ran for four seasons. Hmm. IMDB.com denotes that Daria Massey worked in the entertainment industry for about thirteen years before disappearing from the bright lights. It would appear she's slipped comfortably into private life, leaving behind just over twenty different screen roles, including a stint aboard the cinematic Fantasy Sabu And The Magic Ring (1957). Massey was born on this day in 1936.

During its original television run, there were so very many terrific guest stars who contributed to the Star Trek legacy, and certainly Sally Kellerman deserves a nod. While I think it's safe to suggest that Kellerman had a solid reputation in mainstream fare, her genre credentials are still worthy of note. Fans can check out her goodness with work in such projects as The Outer Limits, Tarzan, The Invaders, The Mouse And His Child (1977), Faerie Tale Theatre, Happily Ever After (1989), Dinosaurs, Doppelganger (1993), Mirror Mirror 2: Raven Dance (1994), Touched By An Angel, The Maze (1997), Masters Of Science Fiction, and Deadtime Stories. Lovely Susan Hart grew up in the small, small town of Wenatchee, Wisconsin before realizing her dreams on the silver screen. Moving quickly from local theater to the glitz and glamor of the big time, she left an indelible mark with roles in such properties as The Slime People (1963), City In The Sea (1965), Dr. Goldfoot And The Bikini Machine (1965), The Wild Weird World Of Dr. Goldfoot (1965), The Ghost In The Invisible Bikini (1966), and The Wild Wild West. Sweet mother of dragons! Somewhere under that mess of Hollywood magical make-up lies the face of actress Janet DeMay (or so I'm told!). Few character actors working today can command a presence like the inimitable Liam Cunningham, and I think many projects are made stronger by the gravitas of his mere presence. As 'Travis Mayweather,' actor Anthony Montgomery helped explore the original final frontier that was Star Trek: Enterprise. Granted, the show only lasted for four seasons, but that's no fault to the actor. Here's hoping the talent gets the chance to suit up for another franchise someday. Funnyman, crooner, actor, and game show host (is there anything he can't do) Wayne Brady was a great, late addition to TV's Colony program, playing a mysterious millionaire/scientist who may or may not have had links to the alien's secret mission on Earth. Alas, even his star power wasn't enough wattage to save the program from cancellation (I think his character even got killed, but I could be wrong). Brady was born on this day in 1972.

I certainly enjoy what Zachary Quinto has done since he's come aboard the Star Trek franchise as a rebooted Spock; it's just that I haven't much cared for the stories they've given him to work with. Spock was never meant to be a 'smart-guy action figure,' and I miss the cooler, calmer, calculating Vulcan/Human hybrid of old. Thankfully, Star Trek hasn't been his only rodeo -- as they say -- asn fans have cherished his contributions to such other properties as The Others, Haunted, Charmed, Miracles, Heroes, American Horror Story, Hannibal, Hotel Artemis (2018), and NOS4A2. Quinto was born on this day in 1977.

For the record:
While I've honestly found the rebooted Star Trek films a bit uneven, I have appreciated Quinto's work in bringing Spock to life for a whole new generation of fans. Furthermore, his work as the singular Vulcan has been recognized fairly widely as being a worthy addition to the growing Roddenberry franchise. For example, the 2009 Scream Awards honored him with a nomination in the category of 'Best Science Fiction Actor' in the first Star Trek film; and, in 2017, the Academy Of Science Fiction, Fantasy, And Horror Films recognized him with a Saturn Award nomination in the category of 'Best Supporting Actor' for Star Trek Beyond (2016).

For a short time there, it sure looked like Morena Baccarin was going to become someone legendary within the ranks of SciFi's leading ladies, dare I suggest maybe even the next reigning queen within our beloved genre? She was a part of Firefly. And then Stargate: SG-1. And then she pretty much headlined the pleasantly-invading hordes on the reboot of V. - Her contributions to the V reboot (2009-2011) definitely caught the attention of the Academy Of Science Fiction, Fantasy, And Horror Films. While most people would probably dismiss Capricorn One (1977) as a thriller and decidedly not sci-fi, I'd beg to differ with them. While there may not be any dramatic elements commonly associated with more traditional sci-fi fare, there's very much a science-related aspect to the story as mankind has secretly learned that he's incapable of surviving a trip to the moon. Also, there's definitely a cultural element that asks the question, "What would society do if they found out we were, essentially, forever limited to just the planet Earth?" That's very much active throughout the film's story.
Capricorn One explores that great urban legend postulating that we never quite went to the moon, and, instead, NASA faked it for whatever reasons. When the 'program' learns that man can't really survive outside of Earth's atmosphere, they perpetrate a magnificent hoax. When it appears that the astronauts are starting to have second thoughts about participating with it, the government decides that these men will just have to die on their re-entry. They escape, and the real chase is on. Some of its effects are a bit dated, but CAPRICORN ONE was another one of those films that ignited my interest in SciFi and conspiracies when I was younger than I am today. It enjoyed its full U.S. theatrical opening on this day in 1977.
Plus it starred a young O.J. Simpson long before he took up with a life of crime.

Believe it or not, that grizzled-looking fellow above is none other than ... Mark Hamill? That's right! Most folks don't know, but Hamill actually tried to cement his credibility in sci-fi by headlining another sci-fi-themed flick: Slipstream. It premiered (in Ireland) on this day back in 1989, and here's the plot summary compliments of IMDB.com:
"In the future, natural disasters (Earthquakes, Floods) have ravaged the Earth, leaving the Earth as a world where pockets of communities live within canyons whilst a violent wind known as "The Slipsteam" rules the Earth and the only means of transport are airplanes. Matt Owens is a daredevil adventurer who kidnaps Byron, a fugitive wanted for murder, who is the prisoner of law officer Will Tasker so he can claim the bounty for himself. Travelling across the wind swept landscape, Matt and Byron are pursued by Will and his partner Belitski, Matt finds Byron isn't what he appears to be and learns Byron is android who murdered his creator and they form a friendship as they travel from community to community and encounter pockets of strange societies that lives beyond the slipstream."

"Despite scientist Nathan's warnings, his boss continues an experiment meant as publicity for his satellite firm: exploding an asteroid. Instead it splits, and the major piece, the size of Iceland, changes course to earth. Nathan warns his sister, TV journalist Carly, and she her lover, police detective Tom. He brings his unruly daughter Kim, her ex-con lover C.J. and her mother, nurse Bonnie, when Nathan offers a flight to a friend's Arctic weather station. Tom takes charge of a dangerous trip to the airport, as everywhere on earth things catch fire and people fight for water, transport and sheer looting."

As long as there's been adult films, there's been an Emmanuelle ... and as long as there's an Emmanuelle, there will be sexual antics across all film genres ... including our very own! It was on this day in 2012 (in Japan) that Emmanuelle Through Time: Emmanuelle's Skin City enjoyed its very first release on home video. A star is born! On this day in 2015 (in the US and Australia), Flight World War II set its departure on home video! Directed by Emile Edwin Smith, the SciFi/Thriller starred Faran Tahir, Robbie Kay, and Aqueela Zoll; and here's the plot summary as provided by our friends at IMDB.com:
"Flight 42 was on its way, when it comes across an unidentifiable storm. Realizing they must go through, find themselves in France, 1940, World war II. A young soldier (Robbie Kay) tells them they are in the middle of a war zone. Dodging bullets and bombs the flight will attempt to make it back to modern day, without changing history too much."
For the record:
The IMDB.com citation for this flick is a bit wonky. It kinda/sorta implies that Flight World War II had a US theatrical release on this day, but I checked Box Office Mojo and found no financial receipts. This is the reason why I've noted it as a home video release. The film's studio art indicates (ahem) that this was based on real events; I'm assumed the 'real events' they're implying relate actually to World War II and not a modern day passenger aircraft travelling back in time ... but I could be wrong.

It's exceedingly rare when a series' final episode functionally serves two purposes extremely well -- it dishes up a devilish cliffhanger while also adequately ending the program with an acceptable, top-notch finish. "...Tell Our Moms We Done Our Best" is a brilliant conclusion to Space: Above and Beyond, picking up on the events set in motion not only in the previous hour but also many of the character threads that had been building toward an explosive climax. Lives were lost, futures were sacrificed, and the battle has only just begun ... but isn't that true about all wars? It first aired on this day in 1996 (in the U.S.).

As much as I enjoyed the characters introduced into the greater mythology of Star Trek, I wasn't all that enamored with the series finale to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine which aired originally in TV syndication on this day back in 1999. Some of them got closer while some of their fates were left in limbo. I realize that Trek enthusiasts might argue how fitting that ambiguity is giving the show's ongoing plotlines, but you'll have to pardon me if I expected just a bit more from a writing staff that really was that good. If nothing else, "What You Leave Behind" (parts 1 and 2) gave the talent the chance to sign off with class, and that they did.
