On this day in 1973, the Battle for the Planet of the Apes took a huge step forward as lines were drawn and plans were made. Here's the film's plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:

"Ten years after conquering the Earth, ape leader Caesar wants the ruling apes and enslaved humans to live in peace. But warring factions of apes led by a militant gorilla general as well as various human groups threaten the stability."

For the record:
Directed by J. Lee Thompson, this particular journey into the wider Apes mythology didn't fare as well with audiences as some others, but the feature did score a nomination for 'Best Science Fiction Film' at the 1975 Saturn Awards.  Alas, it lost the honor to Soylent Green that year.

In Star Trek's original series, Richard Derr had the chance to appear not only once but twice as a celebrated fleet officer for the Federation.  The actor also logged guest roles aboard When Worlds Collide (1951), The Outer Limits, Project U.F.O., and Firefox (1982). Though he's no longer with us, Derr was born on this day in 1918.

Swedish beauty Essy Persson gave up her acting career to pursue an interest in artwork.  Still, while she was on the screen -- big or small -- she captivated hearts and minds.  Genre fans probably recognize her best from an appearance aboard Mission Stardust (1967) where she played a beautiful starship captain who comes to the aid of some Earth astronauts.  Persson was born on this day in 1941.

Throughout her career, the lovely Lee Purcell really only flirted with the fringe of Science Fiction.  She had a guest role aboard The Phoenix, appeared in something called Space Rage (1985), and showed up in The Incredible Hulk Returns (TV), but that (sadly) was about it.  Still, other genre appearances worthy of mention include stops to Summer Of Fear (1978), A Man Called Sloane, Airplane II: The Sequel (1982), Beyond Belief: Fact Or Fiction, The Unknown (2005), Persons Unknown, and Kids Vs. Monsters (2015).  Purcell was born on this day in 1947.

Well before she founded the Lovelogy University for the "Sexual Empowerment" of folks everywhere, the lovely Dr. Ava Cadell practiced what she preached in a little forgotten SciFi gem titled Spaced Out (1979) for 362 Pictures.  As genre credits go, her resume also boasts appearances in the Cult/Sci flick Not Of This Earth (1988).  Cadell was born on this day in 1955.

Cindy Leadbetter's career initially caught fire when she appeared as the Playboy Playmate of the Month (1978) in the magazine's Italian edition -- don't know what Playboy is kids, then ask your dad or granddad.  As you can imagine, Hollywood of one form or another came calling.  To her credit, a good chunk of her appearances -- while being small roles -- were in some memorable (and not so memorable) genre entries like Emanuelle And The Last Cannibals (1977), Luigi Cozzi's Starcrash (1978), Rats: Night Of Terror (1984), and Cozzi's The Adventures Of Hercules (1985).  Leadbetter was born on this day in 1955.

Sadly, a lot of Science Fiction shows come and go far too quickly.  SciFi has had a hard time in some quarters of establishing a large enough audience to justify the production expense; despite a solid premise, all too often these programs end up in TV's inevitable trash bin.  Today's evidence: Level 9 - the show about a shadowy government agency hunting cyber-criminals around the world.  On it, a young Esteban Powell played one of the hackers, and Powell has gone on to a solid career in much more conventional fare. On this day in 1933 (in Hong Kong), the Universal Pictures Monsters Classic Frankenstein scared up more than a few bucks at the box office.  James Whale directed the motion picture from an adaptation of the Mary Shelley novel, and the feature starred Colin Clive, Mae Clarke, Boris Karloff, and others.  For those born on an island, here's the plot summary as provided by the folks at IMDB.com:

"Henry Frankenstein is a doctor who is trying to discover a way to make the dead walk. He succeeds and creates a monster that has to deal with living again."

On this day in 1954, audiences were aghast with the effects of radiation on ants with the silver screen premiere of Them! held in St. Louis, Missouri.  Directed by Gordon Douglas from a story by Ted Sherdeman, Russell S. Hughes, and George Worthing Yates, the SciFi/Horror starred James Whitmore, Edmund Gwenn, Joan Weldon, and others.  According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:

"The earliest atomic tests in New Mexico cause common ants to mutate into giant man-eating monsters that threaten civilization."

For the record:
I've often said that Them! is the 'Citizen Kane' of giant bug movies, and I still think that's accurate.  In 1955, the film was nominated for the Academy Award in the category of 'Best Special Effects.'

On this day in 1955, The Beast With A Million Eyes brought its hideous guise to our world.  Directed by David Kramarsky, Roger Corman, and Lou Place from a story by Tom Filer, the feature starred Paul Birch, Lorna Thayer, Dona Cole, and others.  According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:

"A dysfunctional family operating an isolated date farm in the California desert is threatened by the arrival of an extra-terrestrial."

Editor's Note:

I haven't read an awful lot on this film, but from what I have read it's honestly a bit of a low point in the history of Science Fiction but a definite high point in the era of cheaply made films, being shot reportedly for about $29,000-$30,000 by industry legend Roger Corman.  Also, the creature hinted at in the title -- that one with a million eyes -- doesn't actually exist, not even in the film; it essentially refers to the fact that the creature can psychically control others, thus giving it access to, say, a million eyes.  Reportedly movie mogul Samuel Z. Arkoff -- the man who gave Corman the money for the feature -- was not amused.

On this day in 1965 (in the U.S.), Creature Of The Walking Dead walked onto the silver screen.  Directed by Jerry Warren from a story by Warren and José María Fernández Unsáin, the film starred Rock Madison, Ann Wells, Lloyd Nelson, and others.  According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:

"A mad scientist, who discovered the secret of eternal youth by draining of blood from a young woman, gets executed. His ancestor moves into the home, eventually discovering the scientist's body. He revives him, and the terror continues."

Editor's Note:

Well, if I'm being accurate, Creature Of The Walking Dead wasn't so much 'born' on this day; rather, it's Americanized version was.  This Creature was actually derived from a 1961 Mexico film (roughly) titled Mark Of The Dead Man.  In adapting it for an American audience, director Jerry Warren re-imagined the dialogue through dubbing as well as shot some additional footage with U.S. actors, creating a slightly modified story for his release.

Goldengirl served as the big screen debut for the lovely Susan Anton.  Believe it or not, real-life athletes were hired to serve as Goldengirl's "competition" in the feature, and -- as IMDB.com notes -- they were directed to 'run slower' so that the lead character -- enhanced by Nazi science -- could win.  The film is an adaptation of a Science Fiction novel of the same name.

On this day in 1989 (in West Germany), Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure took a spin through the ages with a couple of high school nitwits.  Directed by Stephen Herek from a story by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, the film starred Keanu Reeves, Alex Winter, George Carlin, and others.  According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:

"Two seemingly dumb teens set off on a quest to prepare the ultimate historical presentation with the help of a time machine."

For the record:
I've always been pleased as punch to consider Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure one of SciFi and Fantasy's smaller franchises.  And, yes, it certainly is a franchise as it gave birth to not only a popular animated television series as well as a short-lived live action one but also a pair of big screen sequels: Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991) and Bill & Ted Face The Music (2020).  That's no small affair in the modern era of filmmaking.  Though the quality of the content has varied, I think the original maintains its charm even today.  Lastly, it did enjoy a 1991 Saturn Award nomination in the category of 'Best Science Fiction Film.'
