Like most of you, I don't profess to even mildly understand the way a movie executive's mind works. For example, how do you launch a franchise like the timely and visionary TRON -- which incidentally first premiered on this day theatrically all the way back in 1982 (in the U.S. and Canada) -- and then just let it languish in the cinematic ether for three decades? Granted, it may not have enjoyed the widest audience appeal of its day. And maybe it wasn't the kind of flick the Walt Disney Company could merchandise the stuffing out of. However, it maintained a strong cult appeal for so long that a sequel was arguably inevitable (which, also incidentally, I enjoyed TRON: Legacy, though I'll admit it had some narrative problems that should've been resolved). I guess all I can say is, "Oh, well."
Written (in part) and directed by Steven Lisberger, the SciFi/Fantasy starred Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, and Cindy Morgan. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"Hacker/arcade owner Kevin Flynn is digitally broken down into a data stream by a villainous software pirate known as Master Control and reconstituted into the internal, 3-D graphical world of computers. It is there, in the ultimate blazingly colorful, geometrically intense landscapes of cyberspace, that Flynn joins forces with Tron to outmaneuver the Master Control Program that holds them captive in the equivalent of a gigantic, infinitely challenging computer game."
For the record:
As well as founding an all-new Science Fiction franchise, TRON drew the attention of critics and audiences. At the 1983 Academy Awards, the feature enjoyed two nominations in the categories of 'Best Sound' and 'Best Costume Design.' At the 1983 Saturn Awards (sponsored by the Academy Of Science Fiction, Fantasy, And Horror Films), TRON took home top honors in the category of 'Best Costumes' but had to settle for nominations alone in the categories of 'Best Animated Film' and 'Best Science Fiction Film.'

In all honesty, I've only ventured into Troma territory fairly sparingly. I've always been familiar with the film company, but I haven't enjoyed much of what I've seen. Still, I can appreciate the solid effort, and Jessica Dublin certainly made some inroads with The Toxic Avenger while it was a small screen sensation in the 1980's. Though she's no longer with us, Dublin was born on this day in 1918.

Susan Cabot never enjoyed 'the easy life,' spending the bulk of her youth bouncing from foster home to foster home. Eventually, she found her place in this world somewhere between acting and her love of art, going on to appear in such projects as Son Of Ali Baba (1952), The Saga Of The Viking Women (1957), War Of The Satellites (1958), and The Wasp Woman (1959). Sadly, at the age of 59, she was beaten to death by her own son in what appears to be a case of involuntary manslaughter. Though she's no longer with us, Cabot was born on this day in 1927.

In my book, Brian Dennehy is more than an acting legend: he's an acting god! His career is marked by some terrific work, each a bit more challenging than the last, and thankfully he's made a foray into Science Fiction, appearing in an episode of Masters of Science Fiction titled "The Discarded" (2007). It's an hour based on a story penned by Harlan Ellison, and it explored what might happen to a tribe of exiled mutants if Earth came calling with a cure for what ailed them. Though he's no longer with us, Dennehy was born on this day in 1938.

Ay carumba! Some days, it's a bit of hunt and peck, but I didn't realize I'd have to search so long to find a picture of temptress Edy Williams where she didn't flash a boob or two. (Not that I'm complaining!) This lovely lady and her ample assets graced such genre projects as The Twilight Zone, Batman, Lost In Space, Dr. Alien (1989), and Bad Girls From Mars (1990). Bless her doubled-breasted heart! Williams was born on this day in 1941.

Folks, I know, I know, I know! I seem to be about the only person on the entire planet who enjoyed 2008's Speed Racer. Mind you: I didn't love it, but I thought it had a great sense of fun, and some of the visuals truly were crafted well enough to make it an entertaining diversion. Plus, it cast screen icon Richard Roundtree in a small role, so I'll give it some extra props for that reason alone. Shaft would approve! Though he's no longer with us, Roundtree was born on this day in 1942.

It's tragic when we lose a talent well before we should, and that's the truth regarding the lovely Soledad Miranda, taken away from us by a car accident. Her genre credentials are still very solid -- much of it in the worlds of Horror and Fantasy, not so much Science Fiction -- and we'll have to be thankful for what we have to remember her by. Actor Jimmy Smits went from playing a streetwise police detective on NYPD Blue to the adoptive father of Princess Leia -- better known as 'Bail Organa' -- in the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy. Tom Hanks used to rule the box office roost; however he somehow managed to connect himself with one relative stinker after another for a time. Maybe Tom will make a comeback while there's still time. Hanks was born on this day in 1956.
Now, I ask you: what good is a movie without a score? Well, it'd be pretty damn boring if you ask me, and that's a little something that composer Harald Kloser works to avoid.
