Star Trek: The Next Generation's first season was a mess of largely forgettable characters and stories, but one of the highpoints would have to be Ward Costello's appearance as a Starfleet officer with a deadly "Conspiracy" to hide. His career also includes appearances in such properties as Terror From The Year 5000 (1958), Return From Witch Mountain (1978), Goldengirl (1979), and Project X (1987). Though he's no longer with us, Costello was born on this day in 1919.

IMDB.com reports that Beverly Tyler was mostly an actress who appeared in B-pictures, but looking as good as she does in her pin-ups one would find her nothing short of an A+ in my book! Still, her only true genre appearance was in a small role aboard Voodoo Island (1957) for Aubrey Schenck Productions. Though she's no longer with us, Tyler was born on this day in 1927.

It isn't every day that SciFiHistory.Net gets to feature an actor that talent of Warren Oates, but that's only because actors of that talent tend to shy away from the realm of Science Fiction. I'd recently watched the actor play John Dillinger in Arrow's restored release of that 1973 film, and I'd completely forgotten the man appeared in an early episode of Irwin Allen's Lost In Space for CBS. Though he's no longer with us, Oates was born on this day in 1928.

1985's Brazil is one of those (ahem) film classics that I just don't get. In fact, it's one of a rare breed of flicks which completely puts me to sleep. I kid you not. I've tried to watch this thing on three separate occasions, and -- each time -- I fall asleep. Still, I always appreciate what actress Katherine Helmond (pictured above) does in it, so I guess it's best to be thankful for small miracles. Though she's no longer with us, Helmond was born on this day in 1929.

It may not count for much, but I'll take an appearance aboard the cult favorite Space:1999 and feature it here! Philip Madoc showed up on the program as well as putting in visits to the world of Doctor Who. Though he's no longer with us, Madoc was born on this day in 1934.
Today's audiences only recall the great Shirley Knight from modern comedies like As Good As It Gets (1997) or even Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009), but I remember her playing opposite Martin Landau in "The Man Who Was Never Born," a 1963 episode of the legendary The Outer Limits. Knight was born on this day in 1936.
For what it's worth, Peggy Miley's resume may not have an awful lot of genre appearances in it, but there are a few deserving mention. She enjoyed visits to The Pretender, Star Trek: Insurrection (1998), 3rd Rock From The Sun, Sabrina The Teenage Witch, An Irish Vampire In Hollywood, Lab Rats, and Netflix's strangely popular Stranger Things. Miley was born on this day in 1941.

Mankuma was born on this day in 1948.
Most Star Wars' fans know him as Porkins -- the rather portly X-Wing Fighter Pilot who suffered a cruel fate in the closing moments of A New Hope -- but he's also shown up in a handful of other signature productions. He appeared briefly as one of two government agents hiring Dr. Henry Jones Jr. (aka Indiana) to pursue the Lost Ark of the Covenant in Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark. His name is William Hootkins, and -- though he's no longer with us -- he was born on this day in 1948.

Don Stark (shown above right as 'Nicky the Nose' from the holodeck sequence of Star Trek: First Contact) is a veteran character actor who is known for making good things happen in smaller roles. Pruitt Taylor Vince is one of those character actors who turns up all over the place in all types of projects. SciFi fans probably know him best for his work aboard Quantum Leap, The X-Files, The Cell (2000), and Heroes Reborn. Vince was born on this day in 1960.
Now, I'd rather not mince words, but so far as Sci-Fi goes I tend to think the works of Ronald Moore are a bit overrated. This isn't to say that I don't appreciate what he's done; rather I think the man gets far too much credit considered quite a bit of what he's done has been simply piled on the shoulders of others who've done at least as much before him. As an example, Star Trek was an entertainment juggernaut long before he came aboard; and while Battlestar Galactica certainly wasn't languishing in obscurity I didn't see the program improving in quality as it wore on. Still, kudos where kudos are deserved, but hopefully he'll give all of us an apology for hatching an entirely half-baked Helix on unsuspecting viewers. Moore was born on this day in 1964.
After appearing in 1985's time-travel classic Back to the Future, the lovely Claudia Wells largely dropped off the cinematic radar. Thankfully, she's started acting in features again, and we'll hopefully see her back on the silver screen very soon. Wells was born on this day in 1966.
The talented Jillian Armenante used her craft aboard Fox TV's relatively short-lived Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles for a two-episode stint. Armenante was born on this day in 1968.
Besides Science Fiction, one of my other great interests is the history surround America's Prohibition, a subject which HBO's stellar Boardwalk Empire explored in great detail. In that show, Michael Stuhlbarg (fabulously) played the always scheming Arnold Rothstein, one of the major players in Prohibition's (and American crime's) earliest days. The talented actor has had a variety of roles in features including the SciFi comedy, Men In Black III, which affords me the opportunity to feature him here. Also, he had a terrific supporting role in Arrival (2016). Stuhlbarg was born on this day in 1968.
