I've said before (many, many times) that I believe it's extremely difficult to blend a legitimate SciFi idea with contemporary comedy, but time travel and modern social mores doesn't get any more entertaining than it did in the original Back to the Future film. In fact, the blend is seamless, and the result is downright perfect. Starring Michael J. Fox as the young Marty McFly and the ever-zany Christopher Lloyd as Dr. Emmett Brown, Back to the Future made audiences laugh in droves, and the film helped cement director Robert Zemeckis as one of the 'go to' guys for a generation. It was first released theatrically on this day back in 1985. Here's the plot summary that's provided by IMDB.com:
"Marty McFly, a typical American teenager of the Eighties, is accidentally sent back to 1955 in a plutonium-powered DeLorean "time machine" invented by a slightly mad scientist. During his often hysterical, always amazing trip back in time, Marty must make certain his teenage parents-to-be meet and fall in love - so he can get back to the future."
For the record:
Since its theatrical debut, Back To The Future has established itself as one of Science Fiction's best comedies ... and it continues to earn praise decades after. At the 1986 Academy Awards, the film took home top honors in the category of 'Best Effects - Sound Effects Editing' while missing out on the gold in the categories of 'Best Sound,' 'Best Music - Original Song,' and 'Best Writing - Screenplay Written Directly For The Screen.' The 1986 Saturn Awards christened the flick with an incredible nine nominations, but the movers and shakers only went home with trophies in the categories of 'Best Special Effects,' 'Best Actor,' and 'Best Science Fiction Film.' Lastly, it won the 1986 Hugo Award for 'Best Dramatic Presentation.'

While the bulk of Tim O'Connor's career spanning over six decades of work (wow!) has been dedicated to far more conventional dramas, one of his more memorable unconventional appearances was as part of the ensemble for Buck Rogers in the 25th Century's inaugural season. Though he didn't continue throughout the program's truncated second season, O'Connor brought a kind of stately respectability to the role of 'Dr. Elias Huer,' a man tasked with keeping Earth of the future safe. Though he's no longer with us, O'Connor was born on this day in 1927. [Source: IMDB.com]
Visionary director Ken Russell toyed with the boundaries of science with his Altered States (1980) for Warner Bros. Though he's no longer with us, Russell was born on this day in 1927. [Source: IMDB.com]
Brilliant character actor Kurtwood Smith has played so many terrific roles over the years, but Sci-Fi fans probably remember him best as Clarence J. Boddiker from 1987's epic Robocop. Smith also had a small but important role as the Federation President in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Smith was born on this day in 1943.
Award-winning actress Betty Buckley dabbled in the realm of Science Fiction and Fantasy with a role in M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening (2008). Buckley was born on this day in 1947. [Source: IMDB.com]
The lovely Susan Penhaligon (above right) had to get down and dirty in order to visit The Land That Time Forgot (1974). Penhaligon was born on this day in 1949. [Source: IMDB.com]
Rick Ducommun gravitated toward more mainstream comic fare, but he did make a few appearances in our beloved genre. He had a role in Max Headroom, Spaceballs, and Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Though he's no longer with us, Ducommun was born on this day in 1952. [Source: IMDB.com]
For a time, Cork Hubbert shared the silver screen with no less than Tom Cruise aboard Ridley Scott's Legend (1985). He also visited the mid-1980's incarnation of The Twilight Zone as well as found screen time in Sinbad Of The Seven Seas (1989). Though he's no longer with us, Hubbert was born on this day in 1952. Like so many others, I'm really no huge fan of Tom Cruise. I can appreciate what he does on-screen, but I wish he'd honestly try a different character every now and then. Still, how does one begin to sum up the impressive career of what it is to be a Tom Cruise? Certainly, he earns praise for attaching himself to some high profile dramas, but -- along with the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger -- has there been another Thespian who so embodies big budget Science Fiction? Minority Report. War of the Worlds. Oblivion. And now Edge of Tomorrow. Hats off, Tommyboy, for a job well done! Cruise was born on this day in 1962. [Source: IMDB.com]
Back in 2004, the brave Thomas Gibson (above right) braved the meteorological onslaught at the heart of the SciFi/Telefilm Category 6: Day Of Destruction. Gibson was born on this day in 1962. [Source: IMDB.com]
Director Peyton Reed has left his mark on the Marvel Movie Universe by helping to bring to the silver screen Ant-Man (2015) and Ant-Man And The Wasp (2018). Reed was born on this day in 1964. [Source: IMDB.com]
Critical favorite Connie Nielsen gave SciFi a try starring as astronaut Terri Fisher in 2000's Mission To Mars (pictured above). Nielsen was born on this day in 1965. [Source: IMDB.com]
Sons of Anarchy regular Tommy Flanagan suited up to face down an enemy less terrestrial in nature when he appeared in 2004's AVP: Aliens Vs. Predator. Flanagan was born on this day in 1965. [Source: IMDB.com]
Before landing big screen success for her work aboard the Saw franchise, the lovely Shawnee Smith enjoyed smaller roles in such entities as The Blob (1988), The X-Files, the TV Miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand, and Armageddon. Smith was born on this day in 1969. [Source: IMDB.com]
Matt Schulze (above left) had different vampire roles in both the Fantasy-lite Blade (1998) and its superior sequel, Blade 2 (2002). Schulze was born on this day in 1972. [Source: IMDB.com]
While Patrick Wilson may not have a long and distinguished career in the realm of SciFi, he did carry the lion's share of the weight as part of the ensemble that brought Watchmen to cinematic life. That's no small accomplishment, indeed. He also had a small role in Ridley Scott's Prometheus (2012). Wilson was born on this day in 1973. [Source: IMDB.com]
Andrea Barber has certainly come a long way since her 1985 visit to The Twilight Zone, but let's be thankful she stopped by so that I can feature her in this space. Barber was born on this day in 1976. [Source: IMDB.com]
NBC's The Event was one of those programs Sci-Fi fans had big hopes for, but -- alas -- it wasn't meant to be. The narrative ended up jumping around too many characters, allowing too little to happy over too protracted a timeframe. However, Ian Anthony Dale did some great work while he was given the chance, mostly because audiences never quite knew whether to trust him (with the building conspiracy) or not. Dale was born on this day in 1978. [Source: IMDB.com]
Easy-on-the-eyes Shoshannah Stern showed up ready, willing, and able to defend herself from the end of life as we know it in CBS's nuclear-age drama Jericho back in 2006. Stern was born on this day in 1980. [Source: IMDB.com]
Fandom may not have wanted her, but that didn't stop Olivia Munn from stuffing herself down mankind's throat. She was finally given a chance to shine for fanboys everywhere in the role of 'Psylocke' in X-Men: Apocalypse (2016). How did she do? Meh. The film didn't play so well. Munn was born on this day in 1980. [Source: IMDB.com]
While you were looking elsewhere, Corey Sevier has built a pretty impressive resume in genre entertainment. He's appeared in such projects as Memory Run, 2030 CE, Decoys, The Dresden Files, Decoys 2: Alien Seduction, Smallville, The Lost Future, Supernatural, and Immortals (2011). Sevier was born on this day in 1984. [Source: IMDB.com]
Sorry, kids, but I can't tell you all that much about the Fantasy-themed House Of Anubis. I can assure you that it did indeed air, and I can also attest that the smiling Nathalia Ramos was one of the program's regulars. Sorry I missed it. Ramos was born on this day in 1992. [Source: IMDB.com]

A star is born! On this day in 1962, The Creation Of The Humanoids enjoyed its only theatric exhibition ever ... if IMDB.com is to be trusted. Directed by Wesley Barry, the SciFi feature starred Don Megowan, Erica Elliott, and Frances McCann; and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"The survivors of a nuclear holocaust fuse man with machine, creating cyborgs to assist in the rebuilding of civilization. However, when the blue-skinned androids seem to be taking over modern society, the Order of Flesh and Blood will stop at nothing to save the remnants of humanity."

On this day in 1980 (in Mexico), Mansion Of The Doomed delivered some modest frights to those interested in its haunted ways. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:

A star is born ... and isn't she lovely? On this day in 1985 (in the U.S.), Red Sonja made her first appearance on the silver screen, and she was given the face of Brigitte Nielsen. Directed by Richard Fleischer, the Fantasy film also starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sandahl Bergman, and Paul L. Smith; and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"The fearless warrior Red Sonja sets out to avenge her family's murder and rid her kingdom from the tyrannical rule of evil Queen Gedren."
For the record:
Some days, you have to take the good with the bad, and such is the film history of the kinda/sorta beloved character of Red Sonja. This particular incarnation, however, never quite fared well with critics or audiences. In fact, the 1986 Razzie Awards gave its lead the 'Worst New Star' honor at its annual ceremony. Ouch.

On this day in 1986 (in Spain), the original Star Wars enjoyed a theatrical re-release. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the premise behind the groundbreaking film:
"Luke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a Wookiee and two droids to save the galaxy from the Empire's world-destroying battle-station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the evil Darth Vader."

Well, to be fair, Arnold Schwarzenegger did say he'd be back. Although it took him seven years after the first Terminator to keep that promise, Terminator 2: Judgment Day didn't disappoint audiences. One could argue that it practically cemented that franchise as one of the great franchises in Science Fiction history. On this day back in 1991 (in the United States, Canada, and Mexico), James Cameron did the unthinkable, and audiences went absolutely gaga for the man. Here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"Over 10 years have passed since the first machine called The Terminator tried to kill Sarah Connor and her unborn son, John. The man who will become the future leader of the human resistance against the Machines is now a healthy young boy. However, another Terminator, called the T-1000, is sent back through time by the supercomputer Skynet. This new Terminator is more advanced and more powerful than its predecessor and it's mission is to kill John Connor when he's still a child. However, Sarah and John do not have to face the threat of the T-1000 alone. Another Terminator (identical to the same model that tried and failed to kill Sarah Conner in 1984) is also sent back through time to protect them. Now, the battle for tomorrow has begun."

Independence Day (aka ID4) was one of the better summer tent-pole releases on the 1990's. In fact, I suggest it was one of the best popcorn flicks ever. Released on this day back in 1996 (in Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and the U.S.), the film did big box office, and it really helped guarantee Will Smith as the 'go to guy' for summer cinema ... which lasted up until Wild Wild West proved it wrong. Here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"The aliens are coming and their goal is to invade and destroy Earth. Fighting superior technology, mankind's best weapon is the will to survive."
For the record:
Without a doubt, Independence Day remains one of the best popcorn flicks ever. The film even won an Oscar in 1997 in the category of 'Best Effects - Visual Effects,' while having to settle for a nomination alone in the category of 'Best Sound.' For the 1997 Saturn Awards (sponsored by the Academy Of Science Fiction, Fantasy, And Horror Films), the feature received an incredible eleven nominations (top prizes were awarded only in the categories of 'Best Special Effects,' 'Best Director,' and 'Best Science Fiction Film'). It was also a nominee for the 1997 Hugo Award as 'Best Dramatic Presentation.'
