The lovely Kay Linaker enjoyed a busy career in Hollywood throughout the 1940's -- in mostly mainstream fare -- but where Science Fiction owes the lady a debt is in her alter ego (nom de plume) of screenwriter Kate Phillips. It was under that name that she contributed to the screenplay for 1958's seminal The Blob for Tonylyn Productions, Inc. (Her writing efforts are also credited in the 1988 remake.) In fact, there are rumors out there that it was her use of the term 'the blob' to describe the movie's creature which resulted in the film's name change from The Molten Meteor (a story some claim is untrue). Though she's no longer with us, Linaker was born on this day in 1913.

Good Lord: I can't even begin to tell you the number of times I've seen Mysterious Island (1961). When I was a wee one, this was the type of film that I found on the TV dial probably dozens of times, and I probably watched it every chance I got. It's a pretty spiffy adaptation of the Jules Verne novel starring the fetching Beth Rogan as castaway 'Elena Fairchild.' Though she's no longer with us, Rogan was born on this day in 1931.

The older I get, the more I realize I have a tremendous fondness for the Science Fiction of the late 60's through much of the late 70's (though there are a few exceptions). One of the flicks I grow fonder of each time I see it is 1976's Logan's Run. One of its stars -- the late Richard Jordan -- dabbled in our genre, appearing in Dune (1984) and the downright awful Solarbabies (1986). He also did fabulous work in 1974's Action/Drama The Yakuza, but that's not a genre release. (I still love him in it!) Though he's no longer with us, Jordan was born on this day in 1937.

The resume for Priscilla Allen boasts only a scant six entries ... but I'm willing to bet money that genre fans remember her most as Arnold Schwarzenegger's "disguise" aboard Paul Verhoeven's exceptional Total Recall (1990). Though she's no longer with us, Allen was born on this day in 1938.

Who doesn't love a good Apocalypse? Director Sergio Martino certainly enjoyed his share of it as evidence by his direction of 2019: After The Fall Of New York (1983). Occasionally I suffer a little heat over crediting the greater world of ALF as Science Fiction, but I ask you: why wouldn't I recognize a franchise named after an Alien Life Form? In any event, the popular sitcom also spawned a telefilm, and funnylady Beverly Archer did her part to provide some menace to the singular sentient being. Archer was born on this day in 1948.

I have a vague recollection of The Powers Of Matthew Star, and that vague recollection tells me the show is best forgotten. This early 80's Sci-Fi-lite program explored the life of the aforementioned Star, the prince from a distant world who finds himself hiding out on Earth. Star's star -- the tween-heartthrob Peter Barton -- made an impression on all the ladies, not that there's anything wrong with that. Barton was born on this day in 1956.

I haven't been able to bring myself to watch Thunderbirds (2004). My issue is that I'm a huge fan of the original program complete with the marionettes, and I've been led to understand that the cinematic version directed by Jonathan Frakes doesn't even focus on the Tracy family. Meh. In any event, the casting of Anthony Edwards for the character of 'Brains' is definitely inspired, so I'll probably Bucket List the film for some future weekend. Let me be clear: I don't dislike the current incarnation of our beloved Star Trek franchise. You know the one I'm talking about? The JJ Abrams' universe? I see them as pretty good popcorn flicks, though I'll admit I do miss some of the preachyness of the original franchise films. British prettyboy Benedict Cumberbatch, however, didn't have "the right stuff" so far as I'm concerned: he appeared as no less than Khan himself in Star Trek Into Darkness, and (sorry, folks) he couldn't hold a candle to Ricardo Montalban's work. Still, I give him props for trying. Cumberbatch was born on this day in 1976.
Erin Cummings is an actress who deserves a franchise. I say this not because she's tough, and I say this not because she's lovely, but I say it because I think she's at that point in her talent that finding a home in a quality genre vehicle would be terrific for her and for fandom. She's had a bit part in Star Trek: Enterprise, as well as one in CBS's underrated Threshold. Her character was the driving emotional force behind the first season of Spartacus: Blood and Sand (a phenomenal program, by the way), but otherwise I'll be waiting for her to captain a starship some day. Cummings was born on this day in 1977.

2015's Uncanny was one of those quieter SciFi films that kinda/sorta gets lost in the shuffle largely because it didn't have any big name presence or slam-bang graphics that large audiences have come to expect/demand from features exploring artificial intelligence.
