Ah, when are your dreams not quite the stuff of dreams? Welll, that would be when your narcoleptic fits turn out to be the stuff of astral projections! Such is the subject matter of the Canadian SciFi property NarcoLeap which premiered on this day in 2018. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the series' premise for this award-winning project:
"When college student Kelsey Atkins unexpectedly leaps into the bodies of other people during her bouts of narcolepsy, she becomes a target in the deadly world of military espionage."

Good grief! We might be better served by stating all of the franchises that Terry O'Quinn hasn't been a part of! His is such a familiar face, and he's a brilliant character actor whether he's taking part in Harsh Realm or Lost or Star Trek or The X-Files or even Falling Skies. Mr. O'Quinn was born on this day back in 1952, so join me in wishing him a very Happy Birthday!

ExtraExtra Alert:
In 2017, I received a promotional copy of SpaceCamp (1986) -- in which O'Quinn played a role -- from a distributor in exchange for review coverage on SciFiHistory.Net. Interested readers can find my review right here.

Ken Lynch is a veteran character actor with over 189 project citations to his name. SciFi fans might best remember him from his work in the memorable first season outing for Star Trek, "The Devil In The Dark" (pictured above right alongside Leonard Nimoy). To his credit, he also appeared in The Twilight Zone, The Invaders, Time Express, Battlestar Galactica, and Galactica 1980. Though he's no longer with us, Lynch was born on this day in 1910.

Richard 'Dick' Geary got the chance to play an Andorian for Star Trek. (FYI: those are the blue aliens with antennae, for those of you uninformed.) He also had a small handful of uncredited parts on the popular late 60's Science Fiction program for good measure. Though he's no longer with us, Geary was born on this day in 1925.

In the seminal Science Fiction classic Blade Runner (1982), Joe Turkel (above right) played Dr. Eldon Tyrell, a scientist equally blessed and cursed with having created a whole new race of synthetic life forms. Though he's no longer with us, Turkel was born on this day in 1927.
As 'Stringfellow Hawke,' Jan Michael Vincent (pictured above) flew Airwolf, the futuristic combat helicopter from the cult TV series of the same name. Vincent has also appeared in such SciFi projects as Damnation Alley, The Return, Alienator, and X-Tro II: The Second Encounter. Though he's no longer with us, Vincent was born on this day in 1944.

Jesse Ventura -- formerly known as Jesse 'The Body' Ventura from his days in (ahem) professional wrestling -- is a bit of a weird duck. Weird politically. Weird socially. Just plain weird. Still, that doesn't stop him from finding other avenues with which to explore his weirdness, including starring alongside his buddy Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Running Man and Predator (shown above). Ventura was born on this day in 1951.
It was an uncredited role in the phenomenal Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan as Khan's kinda/sorta son and heir Joachim that helped actor Judson Scott's star rise to prominence in the sci-fi community. He followed that work up with some solid genre appearances as part of NBC's V and even more guest work in the Trek community on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager. Scott was born on this day in 1952.
Take note: if you're flown a spaceship, then odds are very good that SciFiHistory.Net is going to find you! Celia Imrie flew a starfighter on behalf of the good people of Naboo in George Lucas's Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. She's also appeared on the BBC's long-running Doctor Who. Imrie was born on this day in 1953.
Forest Whitaker is an amazingly gifted actor. He's also an amazingly busy actor. (Seriously, check out his profile on IMDB.com some time.) To bad for us he doesn't do a lot of Science Fiction, but he did appear alongside Jude Law in 2010's Repo Men (pictured above). Whitaker was born on this day in 1961.
Initially, I think Hollywood dismissed the lovely Brigitte Nielsen as little more than Sylvester Stallone's gal-pal. But over time she proved that's quite possibly what she was best at. Still, could you imagine the utterly craptastic Galaxis (pictured above) without her headlining performance? I sure couldn't. And she did make Red Sonja palatable. Nielsen was born on this day in 1963.
Great screen villains can be the stuff of cinema legends, but Galyn Görg's Angie in RoboCop 2 (1990) was hamstrung with an uneven script. Still, the actress embraced genre, going on to work in such properties as Twin Peaks, M.A.N.T.I.S., Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Xena: Warrior Princess, Star Trek: Voyager, Stargate: SG-1, and Lost. Though she's no longer with us, Görg was born on this day in 1964.

The great Shari Headley joined Scott Bakula for an episode of NBC's stellar Quantum Leap back in the popular program's second season. Headley was born on this day in 1964.
Hers may not be a household name, but Amanda Foreman has certainly appeared in several motion pictures which are known worldwide, including Star Trek (2009), Super 8 (2011), and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013). Foreman was born on this day in 1966.
At a glance, it would seem noted author Christopher Golden dabbles in a wealth of genre properties. Indeed, the Internet Speculative Fiction Database lists him as tinkering in the realms of Science Fiction, Juvenile Fantasy, the Supernatural, and several others. Shame on me as I was only familiar with his work co-authoring a few classic Battlestar Galactica novels with original BSG star Richard Hatch. (Shows what I know!) Golden was born on this day in 1967.
London-born actress Rachel Pickup enjoyed a wee bit of screen time aboard Wonder Woman (2017). She also paid a visit to the world of TV's House Of Anubis. Pickup was born on this day in 1973.

Actually, Brian Austin Green made a pretty phenomenal addition to the ensemble that was Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Now, the show never quite lived up to its potential -- imagine how difficult it is to do something like The Terminator on a weekly scale and you get what I mean -- but the young man brought plenty of machismo to the game while it was on-the-air. Green was born on this day in 1973.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: AMC's Humans was one of the better SciFi/Dramas of the 2000's. Great stories. Relatable characters and circumstances. Also, fabulous stars and guest stars, of which the lovely Jill Halfpenny is included. Halfpenny was born on this day in 1975.

The always interesting Diane Kruger sported a guest spot aboard Fox TV's Fringe during the program's run, but that's really her only foray into Science Fiction that I've stumbled across. Hopefully she'll do more. Kruger was born on this day in 1976.
HubbaHubba Alert! The perfectly scrumptious Kitana Baker is one of the ladies willing to play dress up in the guise of comicdom's Vampirella for artists who can use her as a muse. Why, doesn't she just look picture perfect in the role? Baker was born on this day in 1977.

Back when ABC TV's Lost was still interesting, the delicious Lana Parrilla -- one of the hardest working women in television -- had a role in a few episodes aboard the underwater base. Parrilla was born on this day in 1977.
Greg Sestero brought his particular brand of spark to such projects as Gattaca (1997), Retro Puppet Master (1999), and Alien Presence (2009). Sestero was born on this day in 1978.

The addition of Supergirl to the CBS line-up for the fall of 2015 was spectacular (shame on you, CBS, for not renewing it!); and the single greatest reason was that it gave one of the loveliest actresses to grace the Boob Tube in quite some time an entry into the DC Universe ... the fetching Laura Benanti! She played the sometimes duplicitous Astra as well as the gracefully noble Alura Zor-El in a dual role. Benenti was born on this day in 1979.
In all honesty, I only checked out Warcraft (2016) solely due to the fact that the fabulous Travis Fimmel was in the cast. I loved his work about the TV show Vikings for several seasons, and I was hoping for something special. While I didn't find it, Warcraft was an interesting diversion that felt only half-conceived. Fimmel was born on this day in 1979.

2018's Aquaman was a fabulous introduction to the world of the DC superhero, even going so far as to introduce one of his greatest supervillains: 'Black Manta' was played by the talented Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The actor also scored a fabulous role aboard the HBO adaptation of DC Comics' Watchmen for the cable channel. Abdul-Mateen II was born on this day in 1986.

The fetching Aimee Carrero has lent her voice to a handful of genre creations including no less than 'She-Ra' herself aboard She-Ra And The Princesses Of Power for Netflix. Carrero was born on this day in 1988.

In all fairness, Medalion Rahimi may not have an awful lot of genre projects under her belt, but -- as I've always said -- let's be thankful for small favors. She did made an appearance in The CW's The Outpost, and hopefully we'll be seeing more of her in the years ahead. Rahimi was born on this day in 1992.

Directed by Holger-Madsen and adapted by Ole Olsen from the Sophus Michaëlis novel ("Himmelskibet"), the silent era SciFi/Drama starred Gunnar Tolnæs, Zanny Petersen, and Nicolai Neiiendam. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:

Pollard, the feature starred Ruth Clifford, Jack Sherrill, and Sidney Bracey. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:

A star is born! On this day in 1948, Kirk Alyn took flight as the visitor from another planet with the release of the first chapter of the Superman serial for Sam Katzman Productions. Directed by Spencer Gordon Bennet and Thomas Carr, the feature also starred Noel Neill, Tommy Boyd, and Carol Forman. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"Jor-El (Nelson Leigh), a scientist on the planet Krypton rockets his infant son to Earth just before Krypton explodes. The boy is found on Earth by a farmer, Eben Kent (Ed Cassidy) and his wife, Martha (Virginia Carroll) and they name him Clark Kent (Kirk Alyn). When Clark grows up, his foster father asks him to use his amazing super powers only for good. The mild-mannered Clark gets a job on the Daily Planet as a reporter, and soon, as his alter-ego Superman (Kirk Alyn'), and soon tangles with The Spider Lady (Carol Forman), who considers herself Queen of the Underworld. Meanwhile, a fragment from the planet Krypton reaches earth and falls in her possession. It is the only substance that can render Superman helpless."

On this day in 1966 (in Finland), Around The World Under The Sea enjoyed theatrical release ... well above sea level, that is. Directed by Andrew Marton, the SciFi feature starred Lloyd Bridges, Shirley Eaton, and Keenan Wynn; and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"The crew of a five-man submarine travels the world oceans, planting sensors on the ocean floor to warn scientists of any impending earthquakes."

A star is born! On this day in 1966 (in Italy), the curiously-titled Who Wants To Kill Jessie? enjoyed its first theatrical exhibition ever when it played for audiences in attendance of the Trieste SciFi Festival. Written (in part) and directed by Václav Vorlícek, the Czech-language SciFi/Fantasy starred Dana Medrická, Jirí Sovák, and Olga Schoberová; and here's the plot summary as provided by our friends at IMDB.com:
""What if someone had an absurd dream and the visions ran out in the street?" a scientist asks Rose, a researcher who discovers a way to engender beneficial dreams (to produce contented, productive workers). There's a problem: after an injection of her elixir, dream elements become real. Rose learns this after dosing her husband Henry to stop his dreaming about Jessie, a curvaceous comic-book heroine who has anti-gravitational gloves he needs to study so he can solve a problem at the factory where he's chief engineer: Henry wakes up with Jessie asleep next to him pursued by a cowboy and a super hero. Jealousy consumes Rose. All this plus satire aimed at the Czechoslovak state."
For the record:
To the film's credit, Who Wants To Kill Jessie? enjoyed a modest bit of praise on the film festival circuit.

On this day in 1972 (in Spain), The Girl From Rio enjoyed a super-limited theatrical run in the city of Seville. Directed by Jesús Franco, Fantasy/Adventure starred Shirley Eaton, Richard Stapley, and George Sanders; and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"Sumuru, the beautiful leader of the all-female kingdom of Femina, plans to use her women to take over the world."

On this day in 1974 (in Norway), Soylent Green turned up in the audience's cinematic diet. Directed by Richard Fleischer and adapted by Stanely R. Greenberg from the Harry Harrison novel, the SciFi/Drama starred Charlton Heston, Edward G. Robinson, and Leigh-Taylor Young; and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"In 2022, Earth is overpopulated and totally polluted; the natural resources have been exhausted and the nourishment of the population is provided by Soylent Industries, a company that makes a food consisting of plankton from the oceans. In New York City, when Soylent's member of the board William R. Simonson is murdered apparently by a burglar at the Chelsea Towers West where he lives, efficient Detective Thorn is assigned to investigate the case with his partner Solomon "Sol" Roth. Thorn comes to the fancy apartment and meets Simonson's bodyguard Tab Fielding and the "furniture" (woman that is rented together with the flat) Shirl and the detective concludes that the executive was not victim of burglary but executed. Further, he finds that the Governor Santini and other powerful men want to disrupt and end Thorn's investigation. But Thorn continues his work and discovers a bizarre and disturbing secret of the ingredient used to manufacture Soylent Green."
For the record:
I always thought that Soylent Green was really one of the first "environmentally conscious" Science Fiction films, something which tried to look at our world as a whole and what we were perhaps doing to it. I'd argue that it certainly sparked a trend in SciFi flicks to go a bit deeper into subject matter than just warp drive and laser pistols. The film was recognized by many to be worthy of acclaim. In 1974, it won the Nebula Award for Best Dramatic Presentation as well as taking the Grand Prize at the Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival. In 1975, it won the Golden Scroll for Best Picture from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films.

On this day in 1982 (in Italy), 2001: A Space Odyssey enjoyed a rare theatrical re-release. Written (in part) and directed by Stanley Kubrick, the SciFi/Drama starred Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, and William Sylvester. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"Sometime in the distant past, someone or something nudged evolution by placing a monolith on Earth (presumably elsewhere throughout the universe as well). Evolution then enabled humankind to reach the moon's surface, where yet another monolith is found, one that signals the monolith placers that humankind has evolved that far. Now a race begins between computers (HAL) and human (Bowman) to reach the monolith placers. The winner will achieve the next step in evolution, whatever that may be."
For the record:
Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey remains one of Science Fiction's benchmark motion pictures. At the 1969 Oscars, the film was nominated in the categories of 'Best Art Direction - Set Direction,' 'Best Writing, Story and Screenplay - Written Directly for the Screen,' 'Best Director,' and 'Best Effects, Special Visual Effects' ... but it only took home the trophy for Best Effects. Also in 1969, the film did take home the 'Best Dramatic Presentation' from the Hugo Awards.

For the record:
I guess it can't be all that bad ... or can it? At the 1983 Razzie Awards, Megaforce enjoyed three nominations (but no wins) in the categories of 'Worst Supporting Actor,' 'Worst Director,' and 'Worst Picture.'

On this day in 1989 (in South Korea), Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure took audiences on a wild ride through time. Directed by Stephen Herek, the film starred Alex Winter, Keanu Reeves, and George Carlin; and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"Two seemingly dumb teens set off on a quest to prepare the ultimate historical presentation with the help of a time machine."
For the record:
I've always been pleased as punch to consider Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure one of SciFi and Fantasy's smaller franchises. And, yes, it certainly is a franchise as it gave birth to not only a popular animated television series as well as a short-lived live action one but also a pair of big screen sequels: Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991) and Bill & Ted Face The Music (2020). That's no small affair in the modern era of filmmaking. Though the quality of the content has varied, I think the original maintains its charm even today.

Directed by Mamoru Oshii and adapted from the comic, the animated film starred the voices of Toshio Furukawa, David Jarvis, and Doug Erholtz. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:

On this day in 1995 (in Spain), he was the law! Sylvester Stallone, that is! Welcome to the silver screen run of Judge Dredd. Directed by Danny Cannon, the film also starred Diane Lane, Max Von Sydow, and Armand Assante; and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"In the year 2139, the Earth has changed into a virtually uninhabitable place called the Cursed Earth. All of the Earth's population have crowded into the cities across the planet, now known as Mega-Cities. The crimes in these Mega-Cities became so violent and so powerful, that the regular justice system was powerless to contain, then it collapsed completely. However, a new justice system came from the ashes, there were three justice systems in one (police, jury and executioner), they were called Judges. In Mega-City One (formerly, New York City), there was a Judge, named Joseph Dredd, who was the toughest and most stringent Judge in history. One day, he was charged with murder, and was tried and sentenced to life in prison because of it."
For the record:
Erm ... I guess the best I can say -- if I'm being kind -- is that this incarnation of Judge Dredd just wasn't meant to be. Stallone is a marquee actor, and I have to wonder if the script wasn't crafted to keep his face out from under Dredd's signature helmet, but it is what it is. Still, the film was technically proficient and definitely looked good. It garnered Saturn Award nominations for 'Best Science Fiction Film,' 'Best Costumes,' 'Best Make-up,' and 'Best Special Effects,' yet lost in all categories. Stallone and Schneider did have solid chemistry in this buddy picture, so I guess we have to be thankful for small favors.

On this day in 1998 (in Switzerland), the world almost came to its bitter, bitter end with the cinematic release of Armageddon. Directed by Michael Bay, the SciFi/Thriller starred Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, and Billy Bob Thornton; and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"After discovering that an asteroid the size of Texas will impact Earth in less than a month, NASA recruits a misfit team of deep-core drillers to save the planet."
For the record:
Wow. What to say about Armageddon? Well, on April 22, 2013, director Michael Bay finally apologized for loosing the cinematic spectacle upon all of mankind. (Isn't it interesting, though, that one of its principle writers -- JJ Abrams -- remains silent, eh?) To be honest, I didn't think the film was bad enough that we deserved an apology for it: sadly, it was your typical summer blockbuster event, which is to say it was big, loud, dumb, and (mostly) fun. It enjoyed a healthy number of award nominations, and it even won 'Best Science Fiction Film' at the 1999 Saturn Awards (an honor shared with mildly confusing Dark City). Plus the film featured one of Aerosmith's biggest ballads in years -- "I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" -- originally penned by the great Diane Warren. Maybe it's best to think of Armageddon as Hollywood's truest case of buyer beware: you never know what you're going to get.

Every man vanishes without a trace, leaving behind only a log book, and a deadly warning of the legend of the bloodthursty Talos. Once there, she makes good friends with the acerbic Bobbie Markowitz, a Jewish writer who's also a recovering alcoholic. Together they find out, much to their growing stupor and-then horror, that all the housewives in town are strangely blissful and, somehow... doomed. What is going on behind the closed doors of the Stepford Men's Association and the Stepford Day Spa? Why is everything perfect here? Will it be too late for Joanna and Bobbie when they finally find out?"

This original release led to Revenge Of The Stepford Wives (1980), The Stepford Children (1987), The Stepford Husbands (1996), and even the inevitable remake in 2004. At the 1976 Golden Scroll Awards sponsored by the Academy Of Science Fiction, Fantasy, And Horror Films, actress Katharine Ross took home top honors in the category of 'Best Actress' while the film itself missed out on the 'Best Science Fiction Film' trophy.

Star Trek: The Next Generation's second season did take a few baby steps away from the largely forgettable first season; unfortunately, it's second season finale, "Shades of Gray" (which aired on this day back in 1989), was pretty awful.
