CBS's Salvation was one of those summer programs that I don't think found any real cultural traction, at least not enough of an audience to keep it on the air for more than its two seasons. I have a vague recollection of watching the pilot and maybe an episode or two, but it just didn't intrigue me enough to hang around for more. It was an idea many of us who follow Science Fiction closely had seen before, and I just didn't feel it was going to bring much new to the table when it comes to exploring Extinction Level Events. Still, kudos to all involved for the effort; and here's the series' premise as listed on IMDB.com:
"Salvation centers on an MIT grad student and a tech superstar who bring a low-level Pentagon official a staggering discovery--that an asteroid is just six months away from colliding with Earth. The show centers on the ramifications of the discovery of an asteroid that will impact the Earth in just six months and the attempts to prevent it."
For the record:
At the 2018 Saturn Awards, Salvation earned a nomination in the category of 'Best Science Fiction Television Series."

Ah, the TV magic that was Buck Rogers in the 25th Century! Aboard the popular 80's program, Keith Andes had a guest spot as the kinda/sorta villainous Darius, one of the many foils for our intrepid Mr. Rogers. Andes also had a guest role aboard the original Star Trek in the episode titled "The Apple." Though he's no longer with us, Andes was born on this day in 1920.

One of the greatest SciFi/Conspiracy Thrillers ever (in my opinion) is Capricorn One (1977) -- one of the other great SciFi and Fantasy films to come out of '77 -- and the lovely Denise Nicholas (above left) enjoyed a role as a housewife wondering about the fate of her astronaut husband. In fairness, fandom didn't get much chance to know the late Pat Woodell. Her career spanned a reasonably slim 18 professional credits, and even those showcased skills pretty much outside the worlds of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Still, kudos to the lady for making stops to The Munsters and 1972's The Twilight People for good measure. Though she's no longer with us, Woodell was born on this day in 1944.

Syfy's current dramatic outing -- Dark Matter -- is what I like to call "SciFi that isn't for everyone." Oh, it has many of the usual SciFi tropes (a big universe of possibility; characters with some fantastical skill sets; along with spaceships and ray guns) but it also has a meaty premise -- in the future, it's the major corporations which appear to call the shots -- and requires more than a casual viewer's focus to follow. A star is born! I could be wrong on this point, but Explorers and its goofy lunacy is the kind of cinematic experience you either love or hate. I hated it. Don't get me wrong: I loved the story's idea of a group of precocious kids coming face-to-face with aliens monitoring the Earth. What I didn't like was what the story did with it, simply reducing everything to a comic sight gag of an alien who spouts gibberish and nonsense for laughs. Whatever the case, the film first played in cinemas on this day in 1985. Here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"This space adventure stars Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix as misfit best friends whose dreams of space travel become a reality when they create an interplanetary spacecraft in their homemade laboratory. Ben Crandall is a young visionary who dreams of space travel while watching late-night B monster movies, pouring over comic books, and playing Galaga in the confines of his bedroom. But one night he has a vivid dream of flying over a space-like circuit board and shares his visions with his best friend Wolfgang Muller, a young scientific genius who is able to translate his dreams into a complex computer program that actually works. With the help of their new friend Darren Woods, they create a homemade spacecraft and embark on a secret adventure to another galaxy where they find that things are not always as different as they seem."
For the record:
I do remember seeing this one in theatres, largely because it was a summer release that I sat through with a buddy of mine that I made as a counselor at summer camp; and this guy thought the ending was just downright hysterical. (Alas, I didn't, so I knew this friendship wouldn't last beyond the summer!) In any event, I've read recently that Explorers has developed a bit of a cult following, and more power to it: I love when that happens for some of these older releases. To its credit, it also enjoyed a pair of Saturn Award nominations (1986) for 'Best Make-Up' and 'Best Special Effects' but lost out in both categories.

I skipped rushing out to see Pacific Rim when it screened in theatres. (It debuted on this day in 2013.) It wasn't that the idea of giant battling robots didn't interest me; rather, it was directed by Guillermo del Toro, and -- as much as I can appreciate his solid visuals -- I just haven't much cared for his films. I mean you expect giant battling robots to be relatively dimensionless, not the human characters ... and that's all I have to say about that. Still, here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"As a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse."

While IMDB.com clearly reports that Phil The Alien was completed in 2004, the feature doesn't show a theatrical release until on this day in 2013. "An innocent human like alien crashes to Earth and find himself alone in the wilds of northern Canada, and then manipulated by the people he meets."

If she doesn't succeed, she will lose her only source of food and shelter; but if she resists, she and her helpless blind sibling will be killed.
