CBS's Salvation was one of those summer programs that I don't think found any real traction, at least not enough of an audience to keep it on the air for more than its two seasons.  I have a vague recollection of watching the pilot and maybe an episode or two, but it just didn't intrigue me enough to hang around for more.  It was an idea many of us who follow Science Fiction closely had seen before, and I just didn't feel it was going to bring much new to the table when it comes to exploring Extinction Level Events.  Still, kudos to all involved for the effort; and here's the series' premise as listed on IMDB.com:

"Salvation centers on an MIT grad student and a tech superstar who bring a low-level Pentagon official a staggering discovery--that an asteroid is just six months away from colliding with Earth. The show centers on the ramifications of the discovery of an asteroid that will impact the Earth in just six months and the attempts to prevent it."

Ah, the TV magic that was Buck Rogers in the 25th Century!  Aboard the popular 80's program, Keith Andes had a guest spot as the kinda/sorta villainous Darius, one of the many foils for our intrepid Mr. Rogers.  Andes also had a guest role aboard the original Star Trek in the episode titled "The Apple."  Though he's no longer with us, Andes was born on this day in 1920.  [Source: IMDB.com]

How, oh how do you get fired from a Star Wars project, arguably a career achievement of a lifetime (as would be getting hired to do one in the first place!)?  Just ask Phil Lord, though I'm guessing he'll be pretty mum on why he and his co-conspirator Christopher Miller were unceremoniously "Josh Trank-ed" from the Han Solo standalone film.  Ouch!  Lord was born on this day in 1975.  [Source: IMDB.com]

My goodness, but how blessed or lucky can one person be?  As an actress, Michelle Rodriguez tends to fly fairly well below most folks radar, but a quick glance at her resume shows you an astoundingly impressive list of work, especially when it comes to Science Fiction.  Resident Evil.  ABC TV's Lost.  Battle Los Angeles.  And, of course, James Cameron's epic space adventure Avatar.  She's certainly nailed that rough-and-tumble look, and somehow finds a way to chew scenery in one project after another.  Rodriguez was born on this day in 1978.  [Source: IMDB.com]

Syfy's current dramatic outing -- Dark Matter -- is what I like to call "SciFi that isn't for everyone."  Oh, it has many of the usual SciFi tropes (a big universe of possibility; characters with some fantastical skill sets; along with spaceships and ray guns) but it also has a meaty premise -- in the future, it's the major corporations which appear to call the shots -- and requires more than a casual viewer's focus to follow.  Aboard the franchise, Melissa O'Neil makes for a commanding lead in the titular role as Two.  O'Neil was born on this day in 1988.  [Source: IMDB.com]

A star is born ... and isn't she lovely!  On this day in 1935 (in the U.S.), one of the earliest adaptations of the H. Rider Haggard novel She enjoyed its theatrical debut on the silver screen!  Screenwriters Ruth Rose and Dudley Nichols handled the writing duties, and Lansing C. Holden and Irving Pichel shared the director's chair.  The Fantasy/Adventure starred Helen Gahagan, Randolph Scott, and Helen Mack.  According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:

For the record:
At the 1938 Academy Awards, She enjoyed a nomination (but no win) in the category of 'Best Dance Direction.'  It also bears mentioning that the 2007 Kino Lorber 2-disc special release of the film -- along with its supplementary features -- enjoyed a Saturn Award nomination in the category of 'Best DVD Classic Film Release.'

A star is born!  I could be wrong on this point, but Explorers and its goofy lunacy is the kind of cinematic experience you either love or hate.  I hated it.  Don't get me wrong: I loved the story's idea of a group of precocious kids coming face-to-face with aliens monitoring the Earth. What I didn't like was what the story did with it, simply reducing everything to a comic sight gag of an alien who spouts gibberish and nonsense for laughs.  Whatever the case, the film first played in cinemas on this day in 1985.  Here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:

"This space adventure stars Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix as misfit best friends whose dreams of space travel become a reality when they create an interplanetary spacecraft in their homemade laboratory. Ben Crandall is a young visionary who dreams of space travel while watching late-night B monster movies, pouring over comic books, and playing Galaga in the confines of his bedroom. But one night he has a vivid dream of flying over a space-like circuit board and shares his visions with his best friend Wolfgang Muller, a young scientific genius who is able to translate his dreams into a complex computer program that actually works. With the help of their new friend Darren Woods, they create a homemade spacecraft and embark on a secret adventure to another galaxy where they find that things are not always as different as they seem."

For the record:
I do remember seeing this one in theatres, largely because it was a summer release that I sat through with a buddy of mine that I made as a counselor at summer camp; and this guy thought the ending was just downright hysterical.  (Alas, I didn't, so I knew this friendship wouldn't last beyond the summer!)  In any event, I've read recently that Explorers has developed a bit of a cult following, and more power to it: I love when that happens for some of these older releases.  To its credit, it also enjoyed a pair of Saturn Award nominations (1986) for 'Best Make-Up' and 'Best Special Effects' but lost out in both categories.

After meeting some mutant kangaroo/humans, and rescuing her little girl (adopted by her friends), the kangaroos and the girls kick Water and Powers' butt."

She teams up with the prestigious Deep Eyes military squadron, led by her old friend Grey Edwards. I skipped rushing out to see Pacific Rim when it screened in theatres.  (It debuted on this day in 2013.)  It wasn't that the idea of giant battling robots didn't interest me; rather, it was directed by Guillermo del Toro, and -- as much as I can appreciate his solid visuals -- I just haven't much cared for his films.  I mean you expect giant battling robots to be relatively dimensionless, not the human characters ... and that's all I have to say about that.  Still, here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:

"As a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse."

"Humans are few and far between since Earth was invaded by unseen extraterrestrial machines that harvest the planet's natural resources and relentlessly kill its inhabitants. In a remote part of the countryside, where starved humans have become as dangerous as the alien machines hovering in the sky, a feisty 19 year old girl, Sarah Connolly, sets out on a desperate attempt to fight back a group of bandits and defend her parents' farm, their remaining livestock, and the solar panels that keep them safe from extraterrestrials. If she doesn't succeed, she will lose her only source of food and shelter; but if she resists, she and her helpless blind sibling will be killed. And if the mysterious intruder dressed like a soldier who claims he can help them turns out to be a liar, then the enemy may already be in the house."
