So many SciFi series, so little time ... It never fails to amaze me when I find yet one more Science Fiction program that sounds interesting and yet I've never heard of it. In any event, I happened one titled Space Island One which apparently features the day-to-day adventures of a space station crew, focusing on a character-driven narrative as opposed to big spectacles that boom and pop. I've read that it incorporated respectful special effects, as well. This one might be worth another look.
January 7, 1929 is revered as the newspaper 'birthdate' of the legendary space hero, Buck Rogers! (The novel itself had its first installment released in Amazing Stories a few months earlier in 1928.) The Philip Francis Nowlan comic strip continued for years, and it is often credited for introducing Science Fiction to the masses at large, joining the ranks of works from such other legends as Jules Verne and Edgar Rice Burroughs.

January 7, 1934 has been long regarded as the birthdate of Flash Gordon as that was the day the popular comic strips of Alex Raymond were first published. "Flash" inspired a whole slew of imitators, but no other sci-fi hero has stood the test of time against the mighty Earth man! So Happy Birthday Flash Gordon! Here's hoping you're around for another century and beyond!
Even to this day, Gene L. Coon remains one of Star Trek's greatest unsung heroes. He's been credited with creating the Klingon Empire as well as strengthening Trek's trinity relationship -- that of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy -- throughout the program's original run on television. While he's only credited with a handful of scripts for the show, the rumor has long persisted that he performed quite a bit of uncredited rewrites while episodes were in production. It's also been said that he left the show (in a production capacity) as he didn't get along well with the actors, but he continued penning scripts for the third season. Though he's no longer with us, Coon was born on this day in 1924.

Though she's likely remembered more for her work in more mainstream fare, the lovely Terry Moore enjoyed a visit to the Batcave itself in the late 1960's camp television show. She also enjoyed a bit of exposure in such projects as Mighty Joe Young (1949), Death Dimension (1978), Knight Rider, and Fantasy Island. Moore was born on this day in 1929.

Veteran character actor Steven Williams was one of those great smaller roles that made Fox TV's The X-Files such a wonderful viewing experience. His aptly named Mr. X would show up, do something dastardly, and then disappear into the shadows before FBI agents Mulder and Scully could do anything about it! Williams was born on this day in 1949.
Lovely Anne Schedeen enjoyed the good fortune of playing in the universe of Science Fiction in both dramas and comedies. Back in the days of my youth, I can remember chatting up the merits of Buck Rogers In The 25th Century with friends of mine; but you wouldn't be caught dead talking about the show without bringing up Buck's 'gal pal' on the show -- 'Colonel Wilma Derring' -- played by the stunning Erin Gray. Her role seemed a bit cut back during the show's shortened second season, perhaps even given young, interested males such as myself less of a reason to watch. (Curse you, NBC!) Gray was born on this day in 1950.

One of the traits of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine that I appreciated most was the fact that the creators fashioned an incredible assortment of lovable characters to keep the audience interested, and one of the more lovable was a guy you never quite knew enough about: Mark Allen Shepherd played the bar patron Morn throughout the show's seven season run. Shepherd was born on this day in 1961.
Ah, the power of a terrific talent in a winning script! Such is the plight of Hallie Todd who managed to win the hearts of viewers and break them as well in a touching third season entry for Star Trek: The Next Generation. Todd was born on this day in 1962.

To my surprise, actor Nicolas Cage has done very little Science Fiction. One would think that an actor who is rumored to be a bit 'brainy' would certainly be drawn to SciFi's more cerebral material, no? The only significant role to date was as the M.I.T. professor drawn into a mystery where the numbers didn't quite add up in 2009's under-appreciated Knowing. No, it wasn't perfect, but it certainly dealt with some compelling ideas. Cage was born on this day in 1964.

Right now, Lauren Cohan can do no wrong. Her star is definitely on the rise as she's turned in some truly impressive work as Maggie Greene on AMC's popular The Walking Dead. Looks like that appearance in the direct-to-video Death Race 2 did her no harm. In 2014, she added voice acting to her resume, providing some work to the SciFi-themed Destiny video game. Cohan was born on this day in 1982.

If you're looking for a good reason to start drinking coffee, then look no further than having the lovely face of Lyndsy Fonseca serve you a cup. Fonseca was born on this day in 1987.
If you've never seen the BBC's quirky superhero drama Misfits, then you've no idea of what you're missing. Though he left the show after its second season, the young Robert Sheehan was always one of my favorites. He's a great talent who's definitely destined for more work. Sheehan was born on this day in 1988.
What's a Batgirl to do? In all honesty, when the announcement that Warner Bros. intended to bring the character of Batgirl to the screen -- at a time when no one in particular was clamoring for a Batgirl movie -- I thought the news was a curious development. Casting news followed very quickly, and actress and singer Leslie Grace was given the role. Then -- damn near on the eve of when the project was going to finally released to the masses-at-large -- Warner Bros. curiously stated that the movie was being fully shelved -- never to see the light of day -- and its costs would be written off as a tax loss. Ouch. How bad must that flick have been? We may never know. Grace was born on this day in 1995.
