In many respects, I tend to think that the deck was fundamentally stacked against any possible success for Galactica 1980. (It premiered on this day in 1980 in the United States.) Gone were many of the familiar faces -- the action heroes audiences had grown to love with the inspired original like Apollo, Boomer, and Starbuck -- and the new faces were a bit too fresh and too clean to make any lasting impression. Even Commander Adama's presence was watered down by the inclusion of a new voice: an all-new kinda/sorta prophetic 'star child' called Dr. Zee. In fact, the only thing remotely 'cool' about the program were some Viper-themed flying motorcycles; and we just never saw enough of those. Thankfully, the program was short-lived with only ten episodes. Here's the series' premise as provided by IMDB.com:
"Thirty years after the events of the series "Battlestar Galactica", the fugitive starfleet finally reaches its legendary destination. But Commander Adama discovers that the planet Earth in 1980 is not technologically advanced enough to help them battle the Cylons. Indeed, by coming to Earth, the Galactica has inadvertently exposed the helpless planet to attack by the android race bent on exterminating all humanity. Therefore, teams of Colonial warriors are covertly sent to the planet to work incognito with various members of the scientific community, hoping to advance Earth's technology."
For the record:
Despite being a somewhat universally maligned series, Galactica 1980 does have an interesting claim to fame. In 1980, costume designer Jean-Pierre Dorléac received a nomination from the Primetime Emmy association for work completed on the episode "The Return Of Starbuck." Though Dorléac didn't win and -- in some ways -- the hour was pretty much a nod back to the series' predecessor (namely Battlestar Galactica), it might be a dubious honor but one deserved nonetheless.

Within the greater Star Trek community, director Marc Daniels is a bit of a legend, having directed fifteen different episodes over the classic program's three seasons. After Trek's cancellation, he largely worked in properties more conventional, though he did also helm such items as Planet Earth (1974) and an episode of TV's Man From Atlantis. Though he's no longer with us, Daniels was born on this day in 1912.

For the record:
- Daniels' contribution to the original world of Star Trek does deserve a bit of extra attention.
- In 1967, Daniels enjoyed a Hugo Award nomination in the category of 'Best Dramatic Presentation' for his work on the episode "The Naked Time" alongside screenwriter John D.F. Black.
- Also, in 1967, Daniels won the Hugo Award in the category of 'Best Dramatic Presentation' (shared with Gene Roddenberry, I might add) for both parts of "The Menagerie."
- In 1968, Daniels earned two Hugo Award nominations in the category of 'Best Dramatic Presentation' for his work on the episodes "The Doomsday Machine" and "Mirror, Mirror."
The esteemed Michael Craig played the equally esteemed 'Commodore' for a four-episode run as part of Doctor Who's "The Trial of a Time Lord." As for other genre appearances? The actor made visits to Mysterious Island (1961), Modesty Blaise (1966), The Vault Of Horror (1973), Inn Of The Damned (1975), Turkey Shoot (1982), and Tales Of The Unexpected. Craig was born on this day in 1928.

Walt Disney's The Black Hole (1979) is a film many others love far more than I do. I think it's good -- even quite grand in a few places -- but I just can't get over cringing at some of the flick's 'kiddie humor' moments. (It came from Walt Disney, after all.) Still, I've got nothing but praise for the cast and crew behind the scenes, perhaps the most deserving would be director Gary Nelson for bringing all of this together. A review of his resume shows an awful lot of mainstream dramas and comedies under his belt when he stepped into the realm of Science Fiction, so I can't help but wonder if this was a daunting prospect for the man. Nelson was born on this day in 1934.

Troy Donahue dumped journalism in favor of acting when given the opportunity in interesting roles. To be honest, he didn't appear in many SciFi projects, but he did garner roles aboard The Monolith Monsters (1957), Monster Of The Campus (1958), Dr. Alien (1989), Omega Cop (1990), and Legion (1998). Though he's no longer with us, Donahue was born on this day in 1936.

It's one thing to get a guest-starring role in Star Trek; but it's another thing to get the opportunity to play one of the program's mythic bigger-than-life figures. That's what veteran actor James Cromwell got to do in Star Trek: First Contact, long revered to be the best of the Star Trek: The Next Generation movies. (I just thought it was OK.) Cromwell played Zephram Cochrane, the man responsible for not only inventing warp drive but also -- in doing so -- setting Earth on a path toward inclusion within the greater galactic community. Cromwell was born on this day in 1940.

Confession time: I've always loved Mimi Rogers. Hers is an effortless beauty; and the fact that she has solid acting chops is only another plus. While I was disappointed with 1998's Lost In Space reboot, I'm never disappointed at the chance to watch Mimi do her thing. (Lost In Space was an affable enough reboot; it just never created the heat required to get a sequel, which could've been interesting.) She also scored a recurring role aboard Fox TV's popular The X-Files during its run. Rogers was born on this day in 1956.

Comics scribe Frank Miller has been a part of so many graphic benchmarks that it's almost hard to imagine what comic books today would be like if he had explored some other career. In fact, it's long been argued by folks 'in the know' that his groundbreaking take on DC Comics' character Batman rejuvenated the whole graphic industry as "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" was a publishing phenomenon that continues to this day. However, he's also tinkered just a bit in the world of SciFi and Fantasy movies, including the script for 1990's RoboCop 2. As far as his time regarding the Robo-franchise, the storyteller is also credited with contributing to the story of RoboCop 3 (1993) as well as the related RoboCop 3 video game released that year. Miller was born on this day in 1957.

Though I was never much of a fan of Babylon 5, I've always agreed that its cast was arguably one of the most talented for a SciFi ensemble, and that includes the lovely Julie Caitlin Brown who appeared sporadically as Na'Toth on the show. A star is born! On this day in 2019 (in the U.S.), audiences in attendance of the Sundance Film Festival were treated to a cinematic invasion of Little Monsters. Written and directed by Abe Forsythe, the Fantasy/Comedy starred Lupita Nyong'o, Alexander England, and the insufferable Josh Gad. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"A washed-up musician teams up with a teacher and a kids'-show personality to protect young children from a sudden outbreak of zombies."
For the record:
To the film's credit, Little Monsters earned a solid amount of praise from film festivals and during awards season.

On this day in 1960 (in the U.S.), Men Into Space aired "Earthbound." Officially, this served as the seventeenth episode of the program's only season.
The installment was directed by a veteran of genre productions, Nathan Juran (1957's 20 Million Miles To Earth, 1957's The Brain From Planet Arous, and 1958's Attack Of The 50 Foot Woman). Further of interest is the fact that the adventure was scripted by David Duncan: the screenwriter had famously adapted the H.G. Wells' novel The Time Machine for George Pal also in 1960 as well as going on to work on such projects as 1960's The Leech Woman, The Outer Limits (1963), and 1966's Fantastic Voyage.
According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"An eager, space-enthusiast technician installs a smaller Guidance Control System he designed into the rocket ship. There is now room in the equipment bay for him to stow away on the next flight. But during the 12G takeoff his improvised couch crushes the equipment rack, causing the ship to lose all power before reaching orbit. The uncontrollable ship will quickly re-enter and burn unless repairs can be completed."
For the record:
To the series' credit, Men Into Space earned a Hugo Award nomination in 1960 in the category of 'Best Dramatic Presentation.'

It all began right here: on this day in 1980 (in the U.S.), the Saga of a Star World began again when Galactica 1980 aired its very first episode. The tale picked up years after the events depicted in the original Battlestar Galactica with Commander Adama still in charge as the signature vessel of the Thirteen Colonies finally found that shining star known as Earth. The first hour was aptly titled "Galactica Discovers Earth, Part 1," and here's the summary provided by IMDB.com:
"After years of searching for Earth, the Galactica finds Earth. Adama would like to land but a child prodigy named Dr. Zee advises Adama against it because he believes that if they do that the Cylons will attack the Earth. So it's decided to send men to go to Earth and to make contact with people who won't treat them as a threat and whom they can ask to help introduce technology that could help the Earth stand up to a possible Cylon attack."

It all began right here: on this day in 1980 (in the U.S.), the very first installment of the small screen adaptation of Ray Bradbury's epic The Martian Chronicles was broadcast on U.S. television. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"The exploration of Mars begins with two failed expeditions. Colonel Wilder then leads a crew to discover the secret of Mars - only to find all the Martians dead from chicken pox."
For the record:
Though the miniseries kinda/sorta suffered from some critical drubbing (even novelist Bradbury is on record as not being all that fond of it), the production did receive a Hugo Award nomination in 1981, and that's no small feat, indeed. Also, I think it's worth mentioning that the 2019 home video release of the show benefitted from a Saturn Award nomination in the category of 'Best DVD/Blu-Ray Television Movie or Series Release.'

On this day in 1995 (in the U.S.), The X-Files aired "Die hand die verletzt." Officially, this served as the fourteenth episode in the program's second season, and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"Scully and Mulder are called in by a local New Hampshire sheriff when there is evidence of a satanic cult operating in his town. One teen has already died and paranoia has now gripped everyone there. There is little doubt that a group of teenagers did go off into the woods to perform some type of ceremony, but Scully in particular scoffs at any suggestion they were anything more than kids acting out. As the investigation progresses, however, it becomes apparent that some of the staff are involved in devil worship, but the danger, it turns out, lies outside the group."
For the record:
According to what I've read on IMDB.com, "Die hand die verletzt" was director Kim Manners' first directing gig for the popular series. He would go on to direct an incredible 50 additional installments.

But things aren't much better ion the Christa, as Davenport, Bova and Rosie find themselves hunted by Thelma, who's gone completely berserk!"

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine had more than its fair share of war stories. While there were many of them that were quite good, I have to admit that I thought they overdid the war themes quite a bit. In fact, one of my very favorite episodes in their entire run was this quieter, gentler episode that aired on this day in 1997. It's called "The Begotton," and it features Odo coming into possession of another Changeling -- essentially an infact -- and he's tasked with nursing the thing back to health. Things don't quite go as planned -- as was often the case aboard the station -- but the story had a very special ending that changed the Constable's life forever.
On this day in 1999 (in the U.S.), Seven Days aired "HAARP Attack." Officially, this served as the eleventh episode in the program's first season, and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:

Star Trek: Voyager's "Bride of Chaotica!" is another one of those episodes where Trek fans tend to love it so much more than I did. I thought it was clever, but honestly I didn't think it was all that interesting. Whatever. It first aired on this day back in 1999.
