I hate saying this (in part because it probably makes me sound a bit obsessed with my own opinion of things) but Kiefer Sutherland was just all wrong for the role of 'Martin Bohm,' the lead in Fox TV's SciFi/Fantasy drama Touch. He played a single father distraught over the unusual condition of his son (won't go into the details as they don't necessary matter to the point I'm making), and seeing him this "sensitive" so soon on-the-heels of playing super-terrorism-fighter 'Jack Bauer' in Fox TV's exceptional 24 series just didn't work. The Bohm role required him to be majorly emotional, and that's just not the way Jack Bauer did things. Watching Kiefer attempt to play the ultimate 'Beta male' so soon after playing the ultimate 'Alpha male' didn't work for me, and I can't help but wonder if other viewers felt the same.
In any event, the drama last two seasons on the network, and it explored in some unique ways the interconnectedness perhaps we all feel yet never act upon in our daily lives, stretching to perhaps all corner of our Big Blue Marble. I'm guessing others liked it more than me, and still I'm always thankful for some quality genre work any time I can get it.

There certainly was a time when Dean Jones was part and parcel of quality family-centered entertainment, much of which came out via Walt Disney. Some of the projects could certainly be considered very lightweight Fantasy and maybe even a little SciFi, so I'll happily give him a birthday shout today for work in The Love Bug (1968) and Mr. Superinvisible (1970). Though he's no longer with us, Jones was born on this day in 1931.

Though director Tobe Hooper is vastly more well known for his prowess in producing some of the scariest films of record, he has worked in SciFi on occasion. I guess if you're really only going to appear in one major science fiction motion picture throughout your acting career, then you may as well make it a great one. That's exactly what Leigh Taylor-Young did, appearing alongside genre veteran Charlton Heston in 1973's epic Soylent Green. Not a bad choice, eh? The actress has also paid visits to such other genre entries as Fantasy Island, Looker (1981), The Ghost Writer (1990), Addams Family Reunion (1998), The Pretender, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, The Sentinel, Hellraiser: Inferno (2000), and Ritual (2002). For most of us, this will be little more than another face and another name you don't know ... and that's a crying shame because Geoff Johns has been behind some of the most incredible comic book stories of the last decade, if not longer. His 10-year run on DC's seminal Green Lantern books has been nothing short of Epic (with a capital E, you notice), and I can't encourage those of you who love great space opera to take the time to read his stuff with the various Lantern Corps. It's jaw-droppingly-awesome. Johns was born on this day in 1973.

On Syfy's Defiance, she runs a brothel. Pardon my obvious sexism, but I'm guessing it's a very successful brothel. Mia Kirshner cut her acting teeth in a whole slew of mostly forgettable minor roles, but it was her wicked transformation as the terrorist-for-hire in Fox TV's 24 program that propelled her career into new heights. The independent movie scene rarely first comes to mind when one considers quality Science Fiction, but IFC has occasionally waded into the genre. Usually, these films are smaller, a bit more cerebral, and (sadly) get little promotion. Such is the case with 2013's SciFi-lite Plus One (aka +1). In it, a young Natalie Hall made an appearance of a 'party girl' who becomes fascinated with an otherworldly phenomenon. The talented actress also had a role on the CW's short-lived Star-Crossed. Hall was born on this day in 1990.

A star is born! On this day in 1928 (in Germany), Alraune (aka A Daughter Of Destiny) enjoyed its first theatrical engagement ever. Henrik Galeen directed his adaptation of the Hanns Heinz Ewers' novel, and the film starred Brigitte Helm and Paul Wegener. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"A scientist interested in the laws of heredity, impregnates a prostitute in a laboratory with the semen of a hanged murderer. The prostitute conceives a female child who has no concept of love, whom the professor adopts."
For the record:
It's exceeding difficult and time-consuming to find much material about many of these older features, but there's a fabulous site out there (Scifist 2.0) that does a fabulous job in recounting what is known in essay form. Folks interested in reading up on this particular version of Alraune can do so by following the link right here.

On this day in 1952 (in Mexico), Flying Disc Man From Mars set down into Earth's humble theaters. Written by Ronald Davidson and directed by Fred C. Brannon, the SciFi/Serial starred Walter Reed, Lois Collier, and Gregory Gaye; and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"A hero single-handedly sets himself against Martians trying to assume control of Earth."
For the record:
Flying Disc Man From Mars was a 12-chapter Republic serial that -- from what I've read -- utilized a lot of stock footage in order to keep its budget reasonably trim. Still, Wikipedia.org reports it was the most expensive serial of the 1950's, not a huge stretch given the fact that the serials were largely in decline. Also, Wikipedia.org reports that, in 1958, a standalone feature running 75-minutes was released under the title Missile Monsters enjoyed a release. Otherwise, I've not explored much information about this project.

It's been said that this film was somewhat rushed into production based on the success of Pal's earlier Destination Moon (1950).

HubbaHubba Alert! Science Fiction and Fantasy films have always enjoyed a fair amount of cheese, and on this day in 1967 the Fantasy-themed Prehistoric Women (aka Slave Girls) served up yet one more helping of scantilly-clad ladies in a fantastical setting. David rejects the advances of Queen Kari and sides with the blondes, which leads to him being imprisoned in the dungeon. Can David find some way of returning to his own time? A star is born! On this day in 1971, the SciFi telefilm City Beneath The Sea rose to the broadcast surface. This was just one more of the many projects stemming from the imagination of Irwin Allen who co-wrote the script and directed the feature. Starring Stuart Whitman and Rosemary Forsyth, here's the flick's plot summary as listed on IMDB.com:
"A group of 21st-century colonists inhabit an underwater city called Pacifica. They find that they must defend their city against hostile alien forces."
For the record:
As I understand it, City Beneath The Sea was originally intended as a pilot for a television series, but the networks apparently all passed on picking it up. However, it was deemed worthy of view, so it did air as a telefilm in the United States as well as enjoying some theatrical engagements around the world.

For the record:

At the 1985 Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival, director Nick Castle received a nomination for their 'Grand Prize' for his work on the film. On this day in 1985 (in Ireland), The Terminator came back through time to save the future ... or so it tried. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"A human soldier is sent from 2029 to 1984 to stop an almost indestructible cyborg killing machine, sent from the same year, which has been programmed to execute a young woman whose unborn son is the key to humanity's future salvation."
For the record:
It's impossible to deny the clout James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger earned with the release of this little gem. Yes, it gave them a franchise in the broader scheme of things, but it's an enduring property that continues to produce iterations in film, television, and print which give fans more to consume, if not think about. As for the original flick? The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films was smitten, giving the feature an incredible three Saturn Awards ('Best Make-up,' 'Best Writing,' and 'Best Science Fiction Film') while having to settle for nominations only in four other categories ('Best Music,' 'Best Director,' 'Best Actress,' and 'Best Actor'). Like that unstoppable machine of the title, the franchise refuses to go down for the fight, and I suspect we'll see more of the same in the years ahead.
