"The Mark of Gideon" presented Capt. Kirk with a curious challenge: believing to be beaming down to the surface of the planet Gideon, he finds himself aboard a completely deserted Enterprise ... well, completely deserted except for a beautiful woman, that is! If only all Starfleet captains could be so lucky!  The Star Trek episode premiered on this day back in 1969.

Actor and stuntman Jack 'Tiny' Lipson earned the distinction of appearing as 'King Vultan' aboard the Buster Crabbe 1936 serial for Flash Gordon.  Otherwise, a great deal of his career was relegated to background roles, giving the man a good deal of uncredited screen appearances.  Though he's no longer with us, Lipson was born on this day in 1901.

What would Flash Gordon be without a Dale Arden to tag along?  The lovely Carol Hughes took on the task of traveling the stars with Flash in 1940's Flash Gordon Conquers The Universe.  She also enjoyed an uncredited appearance in 1949's Mighty Joe Young for good measure.  Though she's no longer with us, Hughes was born on this day in 1910.

The lovely Eartha Kitt certainly left a lasting impression in the guise of 'Catwoman' for the late 1960's TV version of Batman.  In 1986, she returned to the silver screen -- also in a bit of camp -- for work in the SciFi/Comedy The Pink Chiquitas for SC Entertainment.  In 1987, she found a bit of screen time aboard the Horror-themed The Serpent Warriors for Eastern Media Group.  In 1989, Fantasy called again, and the actress found work in Erik The Viking for Prominent Features.  Did she have other forays into the realms of the Fantastic?  Chalk up screen time in Living Doll (1990), Ernest Scared Stupid (1991), Matrix, The Proteus Chronicles (1998), and Holes (2003).  Though she's no longer with us, Kitt was born on this day in 1927.

His is the voice of Darth Vader, the Dark Lord of the Sith, throughout all theatrical films in the Star Wars saga.  (And, yes, he's also the voice of CNN.)  But James Earl Jones has certainly enjoyed a wealth of screen time in Science Fiction, Fantasy, and even Horror over the years.  Fans might recognize him -- or his signature voice, at least -- from such projects as Dr. Strangelove (1964), Tarzan, The UFO Incident (1975), Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977), Conan The Barbarian (1982), The Flight Of Dragons (1982), Bloodtide (1982), City Limits (1984), Faerie Tale Theatre, Allan Quartermain And The Lost City Of Gold (1986), Field Of Dreams (1989), Grim Prairie Tales (1990), Terrorgram (1990), The Meteor Man (1993), Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman, Judge Dredd (1995), 3rd Rock From The Sun, Touched By An Angel, Stargate SG-1, Merlin, Robots (2005), Click (2006), and  Jack And The Beanstalk (2009).  Though he's no longer with us, Jones was born on this day in 1931.

Though I'm sure that fans of a certain generation remember the late Shari Lewis for her work in a certain children's program, it's important to underscore that a good many of these performers had other skill sets.  Worthy of note is the fact that Lewis crafted an hour of the legendary Star Trek during its third and final season on network television.  Though she's no longer with us, Lewis was born on this day in 1937.

Comedy legend Andy Kaufman played a robot with a heart of gold aboard the SciFi/Comedy Heartbeeps (1981).  Though he's no longer with us, Kaufman was born on this day in 1949.

For the record:
Well, sometimes you win ... and sometimes you lose.  At the 1981 The Stinkers Bad Movie Awards, Heartbeeps was a bit of a sensation.  Kaufman's work in the picture put him front-and-center in three categories (but no wins) -- 'Most Annoying Fake Accent: Male,' 'Worst On-Screen Couple,' and 'Worst Actor.'  Ouch.

Picture
Funnyman and political animal Jim Carrey has come a long way from general goofiness in his projects.  His more thoughtful entries -- like Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004) and even The Truman Show (1998) -- certainly flirt on the fringes of Science Fiction.  Early his his career, he also enjoyed a lot of screen time in the Horror/Comedy Once Bitten (1985) and the Cult/SciFi Earth Girls Are Easy (1988).  Carrey was born on this day in 1962.

Genndy Tartakovsky has one of the most unique animation styles to find major acclaim in the past few decades.  Science Fiction fans loved his particular take on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and they were driven insane with their love for his futuristic warrior tale Samurai Jack.  In fact, in 2004 both his Clone Wars ("Chapters 1 - 20") and Samurai Jack ("Birth of Evil") were awarded Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Animated Program, while he and his crew took home the same award in 2005 for Chapters 21 - 25 of Clone Wars.  Tartakovsky was born on this day in 1970.

I know that I'm in the minority as having loved SGU: Stargate Universe.  (Keep in mind, I wasn't that much of a fan of the other two series, and maybe my fondness for it makes sense.)  Young David Blue had a prominent role in the program, and I'd love to see it revisited if only to give it a proper send-off.  Blue was born on this day in 1982.

On this day in 1992, Emilio Estevez took Rene Russo onto a curious look at tomorrow in Geoff Murphy's Freejack ... a film that had the unfortunate task of casting Mick Jagger as the villain.  Audiences weren't all that impressed, but the film does maintain a small but vociferous cult following.  Here's the summary compliments of our friends at IMDB.com:

For the record:
There are some who say that it wasn't until Fritz Lang's Metropolis made its silver screen debut that Science Fiction -- as a motion picture -- was truly born, and I suppose there might be a glimmer of truth to that.  Arguably, the film probably wasn't as revered in its time as its become as the years have gone by, but the same could be said of other pictures in their respective genres.  IMDB.com denotes only a single critical citation back then -- it received a nomination in the category of 'Most Popular Film' at the 1927 Faro Island Film Festival -- and it has racked up some solid accolades since then, especially with its 2002 restoration and subsequent home video releases.
