On this day in 2008, The Terminator franchise took a relatively bold new direction when Fox Television premiered Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The premise was simple -- put John Connor in high school and have his mother and he on-the-run along with a beautiful cyborg gal-pal. They could experience all kinds of adventures while trying to get John alive from the forces of tomorrow who sought to kill him.
Unfortunately, these Chronicles never really caught fire. It had some quality stories (I stuck with it through its entire run), and it even wrapped itself up nicely with an ending open to several different interpretations. The acting was pretty solid, but methinks they tried to be a bit too gimmicky at times by keeping the focus on John, when the films thus far have proven that his mother was a vastly richer character.

The works of Philip K. Dick never fail to inspire audiences with ideas of what could've been, and Amazon Studios' adaptation of one of the author's defining works certainly creating all kinds of buzz, including winning several major awards. The Man In The High Castle postulated a huge 'what if' with Germany winning the second World War, and the United States being split into occupied territories; in the meantime, Nazi scientists managed to crack into the multiverse and ... well, I won't spoil it for those of you who might still seek it out. Here's the series' premise from IMDB.com:
"In a dystopian America dominated by Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, a young woman discovers a mysterious film that may hold the key to toppling the totalitarian regimes."

Though I could be wrong, TV's Second Chance was one of those blink-and-you'll-miss-it programs that came and went all too fast for viewers to fall in love with it. Filling out eleven episodes in one of those truncated half-seasons (in the U.S.), the show explored the idea of body swapping in a way that perhaps we'd seen before (all too often?) and maybe that's why audiences stayed away. In any event, here's the series' premise as provided by IMDB.com:
"After Jimmy Pritchard is killed in a robbery at his son's home, Pritchard is brought back to life in the body of a younger man by a billionaire and a bioengineer."

The great Osa Massen came from Denmark all the way to Hollywood and made a big splash in the entertainment industry. She enjoyed a career a bit under fifty different screen credits, but still she squeezed herself into one of the benchmark Science Fiction films of the 1950's with a big role aboard Rocketship X-M for Lippert Pictures. Though she's no longer with us, Massen was born on this day in 1914.

Frances Sternhagen played the 'doctor' to Sean Connery's space marshal in one of the best Westerns ever set in outer space: Outland really was little more than a futuristic take on the classic oater High Noon, and the outer space setting only helped increase the feeling of claustrophia. Though she's no longer with us, Sternhagen was born on this day in 1930.

Oh, the bygone days of syndicated television! Back in the day, there was a little something-something called -- believe it or not -- Friday The 13th: The Series. Essentially, it had nothing to do with the film franchise of the same name but instead focused on some intrepid adventurers traveling about retrieving cursed objects. I don't remember it much -- I do recall being smitten with the fetching leading lady Louise Robey -- but kudos to Chris Wiggins for bringing a sense of gravitas to an otherwise forgettable serial. The actor and voiceover specialist leaves behind a rich resume worth a glance (he voiced a semi-regular aboard the mid-1980's animated effort Star Wars: Droids), and I'd encourage you to check it out. Though he's no longer with us, Wiggins was born on this day in 1930.

Arguably, "Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space'" is one of the best (if not the best) hour ever produced for Fox TV's wildly popular The X-Files during its original run, and Charles Nelson Reilly helped make the episode memorable as the key character, an author exploring the alien abduction phenomenon. Though he's no longer with us, Reilly was born on this day in 1931.

If you build a career of nearly 100 different screen credits, then the odds are very good that you've made some appearance in a genre project, whether it was big or small. Charlie Brill had a run-in with Star Trek's own version of the lovable furball in the classic second season episode, "The Trouble With Tribbles." Interestingly enough, his character was brought back -- albeit surreptitiously -- in a popular episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. So far as additional genre appearances go, the actor enjoyed some modest screen time aboard Wonder Woman, Supertrain, The Incredible Hulk, The Man Who Wasn't There (1983), Out Of This World, and They Came From Outer Space.
