Actress Kirstie Alley's "involvement" in our most beloved franchise has been the subject of much debate and heresay.
For example, I've read in some places that she really didn't want to continue as part of the growing Star Trek legacy, and, thusly, she priced herself out of the market so far as producers were concerned. Still, others claim that she thought her character -- Saavik -- had become as important to the ongoing mythology as were the 'Magnificent Seven' (the original cast), and, thusly, she demanded a huge salary increase.
Whatever the truth may be, Alley only had a single adventure in the Trek universe, but what an adventure it was! Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan remains my personal favorite Trek movie, and I know I'm not alone in that respect. While it would've been nice to see what this future "Fat Actress" (not a jab but merely an observation of her future show) could've done in the role, I guess we can all agree it wasn't destined to be.
Though she's no longer with us, Alley was born on this day in 1951.

Anyone who knows anything about mysteries (I know a little) knows that author Walter Mosley's original claim-to-fame was the creation of Easy Rawlins, a black private investigator based in Los Angeles. In fact, his "Devil In A Blue Dress" was given the big screen treatment starring no less than Denzel Washington. Mosley's since branched out in his writing, and he's added Science Fiction writing to his resume. Those interested should check out his Blue Light or 2006's The Wave.
