Where would Science Fiction be without the works of Jules Verne? To name but a few of his accomplishments would be an insult, but that's all one might have space for reasonably. Journey to the Center of the Earth. Mysterious Island. From the Earth to the Moon. Around the World in 80 Days. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Even today, Hollywood is quick to revisit these tales, and no doubt that'll continue in the decades ahead. Though he's no longer with us, Verne was born on this day in 1828.

Roboticist-turned-robot 'Dr. Roger Korby' was one of the more memorable characters from Star Trek's first season ("What Are Little Girls Made Of?"), brought to life so winningly by actor Michael Strong. Though he's no longer with us, Strong was born on this day in 1918.

Now THAT's what I'm talking about! Legendary composer John Williams has breathed musical life into so, so many of our beloved films and movie franchises today, can you possibly imagine what the worlds of science fiction would sound like with his many contributions? E.T.? Star Wars? Jaws? Good grief, the list is phenomenal. While it's been some time since he penned a genuinely brilliant score so far as I'm concerned, I'll still wish him the happiest of happy birthdays with many returns! Williams was born on this day in 1932.

Alex Diakun is another one of those fantastic character actors who gets called on to do big things with the smallest of appearances, including roles aboard such favorites as Airwolf, Millennium, The X-Files, RoboCop: Alpha Commando, The Outer Limits, Stargate: SG-1, and much, much more. Diakun was born on this day in 1946.

I've always loved Mary Steenburgen. (Hate her politics, but love her good looks!) I first remember her from one of my all-time favorites sci-fi romances -- 1979's Time After Time -- where her bank service rep Amy ends up romancing H.G. Wells who has followed Jack the Ripper forward in time. It's a great flick I encourage you to see if you haven't already. Steenburgen was born on this day in 1953.
Well, I'll be perfectly honest ... I was never all that much a fan of 'Neelix.' To me, it seemed like he was a quick creation by the writers, solely for the purpose of injecting some humor into the oft-humorless world of Star Trek. I thought they used him wonderfully in the Star Trek: Voyager series premiere ("Caretaker, Parts 1 & 2"), but after that he was just reduced to a 'groaner' character. Sorry, Ethan ... erm ... Mr. Phillips, that is. Happy birthday, either way. He was born on this day in 1955.

Henry Czerny is a great character actor who ends up getting plenty of work in the entertainment industry. He was recently featured in a brief stint on TNT's sci-fi series, Falling Skies. Plus, he recently turned up as the Toyman in an episode of CBS's Supergirl. Czerny was born on this day in 1959.
Not even Vince Neil is headbanger enough to escape the power of the Shark ... the Sharknado, that is! The Motley Crue frontman played himself in Sharknado 4: The 4th Awakens in 2016. Neil was born on this day in 1961.
International actor Martin Wuttke made an appearance aboard the Wachowskis' Cloud Atlas as well as their Netflix property, Sense8, during its run. Wuttke was born on this day in 1962.
Hubba-hubba Alert, people: I suffered an eye-opening experience searching the Internet for a usable photograph of the lovely Mathilda May! Anyone who knows a bit about her first entry into international film -- 1985's Lifeforce -- can appreciate my dilemma; May marched around most of the film without anything on! (Yes, all of the goods are on full display, folks.) I guess it helps when one looks dynamite in her birthday suit! May was born on this day in 1965.

Now, listen here: those of you who missed Happy Death Day (2017) and Happy Death Day 2U (2019) are forgiven. This relatively young franchise was largely billed as a Slasher/Comedy in the vein of Groundhog Day, but what you learn in watching the two flicks back-to-back is that it's definitely a smart SciFi/Horror property. And if that isn't enough for you? The perfectly fetching Missy Yager has a solid role in both films. Yager was born on this day in 1968.

Susan Misner, FX's The Americans just doesn't give you enough to do! Talk to those producers! Ramp up that role! Misner was born on this day in 1971.

Maybe he's not so much of a SciFi centerpiece as others mentioned in our hallowed cyberspace halls today, but Seth Green deserves a bit of a shout-out for no reason other than his contributions to lampooning so many things we love today with his work on Robot Chicken. Green was born on this day in 1974.
I kid you not: one of the greatest animation projects to spring from DC Comics EVER (sorry, folks, but that's my opinion) was the small screen's Green Lantern: The Animated Series. Sadly, the show just never quite 'caught on' with audiences, and I'm forever deprived its greatness each and every day. In any event, voice actor Josh Keaton did a spectacular job bringing both the Green Lantern and his Earthly counterpart Hal Jordan to life on the show, and Keaton was born on this day in 1979.
Dawn Olivieri earned raves for her work on Showtime's House of Lies, but Science Fiction fans might recognize her from her work in Stargate: Atlantis, the short-lived Knight Rider reboot, NBC's Heroes, and Bright (2017). Olivieri was born on this day in 1981.

Don't tell me you've never seen Spartacus? Starz Network's smart historical sex, swords, and sandals tale was epic, and it only got better as it went. Liam McIntyre played the signature former slave (after stepping in with the sad death of the original lead), and he turned in brilliant work throughout. "A scientist interested in the laws of heredity, impregnates a prostitute in a laboratory with the semen of a hanged murderer. The prostitute conceives a female child who has no concept of love, whom the professor adopts."

It's exceeding difficult and time-consuming to find much material about many of these older features, but there's a fabulous site out there (Scifist 2.0) that does a fabulous job in recounting what is known in essay form. A star is born! On this day in 1968, the original Science Fiction classic Planet Of The Apes enjoyed its initial theatrical premiere in New York City, New York. Directed by Franklin J. Schaffner and based on the novel by Pierre Boulle (with the adaptation in part completed by The Twilight Zone master Rod Serling), the feature starred Charlton Heston, Kim Hunter, and Roddy McDowall, and here's the plot summary from IMDB.com:
"An astronaut crew crash-lands on a planet in the distant future where intelligent talking apes are the dominant species, and humans are the oppressed and enslaved."
For the record:
Decades later, Planet Of The Apes continues to impress both with the impact of the original film as well as the franchise's recreation in the 2000's. The feature was nominated for the 1969 Oscars in both the Best Costume Design and the Best Music (Original Score) categories but failed to capture the prized statue. Legendary make-up technician John Chambers did, however, secure an honorary Oscar for his achievements in bringing the Apes to life for the motion picture. So far as this viewer is concerned, I prefer these original Apes over the CGI creations of the modern era.

Also in 1969, the film did take home the 'Best Dramatic Presentation' from the Hugo Awards.

On this day in 1984 (in France), the SciFi/Fantasy 'spectacle' that was Krull enjoyed its theatrical release. Directed by Peter Yates, the feature starred Ken Marshall and Lysette Anthony, and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"A prince and a fellowship of companions set out to rescue his bride from a fortress of alien invaders who have arrived on their home planet."
For the record:
Despite its overwhelming mediocrity, Krull did catch the attention of the fine folks at the Academy Of Science Fiction, Fantasy, And Horror Films. But it did take home a coveted statue for 'Worst Picture' from the 1983 Stinkers Bad Movie Awards. That's gotta count for something, no?

On this day in 1985 (in Finland, Denmark, and Portugal), Sheena took to the jungles in her very own big screen adventure. Directed by John Guillerman, the Fantasy feature starred Tanya Roberts, Ted Wass, and Donovan Scott.
"Sheena grew up in the African wild, raised by a mystical witch woman. When her foster mother is framed for a murder Sheena is forced to flee, helped by her ability to talk to animals and her knowledge of the jungle."
For the record:
Ouch! Sheena cleaned up with a respectable 5 nominations at the 1985 Razzie Awards (no wins, however) in the categories of 'Worst Musical Score,' 'Worst Screenplay,' 'Worst Director,' 'Worst Actress,' and the ever-impressive 'Worst Picture.' Five nominations. No wins. That's gotta leave a mark.

On this day in 1985 (in Sweden), James Cameron's The Terminator started another SciFi franchise. The SciFi feature starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"In 1984, a human soldier is tasked to stop an indestructible cyborg killing machine, both sent from 2029, from executing a young woman, whose unborn son is the key to humanity's future salvation."
For the record:
It's impossible to deny the clout James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger earned with the release of this little gem. Yes, it gave them a franchise in the broader scheme of things, but it's an enduring property that continues to produce iterations in film, television, and print which give fans more to consume, if not think about. As for the original flick? The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films was smitten, giving the feature an incredible three Saturn Awards ('Best Make-up,' 'Best Writing,' and 'Best Science Fiction Film') while having to settle for nominations only in four other categories ('Best Music,' 'Best Director,' 'Best Actress,' and 'Best Actor'). Like that unstoppable machine of the title, the franchise refuses to go down for the fight, and I suspect we'll see more of the same in the years ahead.

"A few years from now, Earth will have the first contact with an alien civilization. These aliens, known as Newcomers, slowly begin to be integrated into human society after years of quarantine."
For the record:
As well as launching a new franchise for Science Fiction fans to enjoy, the first film enjoyed a reasonable amount of attention from the professional organizations. In 1990, the Academy Of Science Fiction, Fantasy, And Horror Films awarded it their Saturn Award in the category of 'Best Science Fiction Film.' On this day in 1996 (in the Czech Republic), Galaxis crashed down to Earth theatrically. Directed by William Mesa, the SciFi feature gave actress Brigitte Nielsen something to crow about, and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"Legend says that the sacred crystal is the source for all life and was created at the beginning of time. Kyla has sought the crystal to use its powers for himself and he takes the crystal after smashing the defenders on the Planet Sintaria. But there is another identical crystal on Earth and Ladera heads there to get it before the evil Kyla. She finds that Jed has taken the crystal from is hiding place, but Victor and his inexhaustible hit men want it for money they gave to Jed. Ladera easily handles the weak earthlings and saves Jed, but Kyla is also after the crystal. Jed and Ladera must find the crystal before Kyla, the clueless cops or the dimwitted villains."

I've read that special effects pioneer Mesa left a previous job in order to direct Galaxis, and -- in the process -- opened up his own Special Effects studio -- Flash Film Works -- to complete the visuals for his directing debut. Flash Film Works has gone on to do effects sequences for such features as Red Planet (2000), The Day The Earth Stood Still (2008), Clash Of The Titans (2010), and TV's The Librarians.
