Sorry, folks, but I don't do sitcoms.  Never have.  Probably never will.  I don't dislike them; I just find them far too formulaic for my tastes.  Such is life.  In any event, on this day back in 2000, the BBC mixed Superhero goodness with the typical situation comedy with the airing of My Hero.  According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the premise behind the series:

"Thermoman is a multiple-powered superhero who originates from the planet Ultron. In an attempt to do his best to fit in with life on earth, he creates the human alias of George Sunday."

Critical darling Ida Lupino stretched her dramatic wings with a guest-starring appearance aboard Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone.  Interestingly enough, I've read that Ms. Lupino is one of the only talents to both appear in and direct episodes of the Serling serial.  How's that for being progressive?  As for her television work, she also paid visits to Batman and The Wild Wild West for good measure.  In 1975, she enjoyed a role aboard the Horror/Fantasy The Devil's Rain for Sandy Howard Productions.  Though she's no longer with us, Lupino was born on this day in 1918.

Yes, peeps, there was a time when so much set decorating for Science Fiction films looked like little more than condoms inflated and stuck to walls; and such was the case for a short scene aboard the campy Invaders From Mars (1953), a film which boasts an appearance by William Phipps.  So far as genre work is concerned, he also appeared aboard Five (1951), The War Of The Worlds (1953), Science Fiction Theatre, Cat-Women Of The Moon (1953), The Snow Creature (1954), Men Into Space, The Twilight Zone, The Evil Of Frankenstein (1964), Batman, The Green Hornet, The Wild Wild West, Space Force (1978), The Secret Empire, Probe, and Time Express.  Though he's no longer with us, Phipps was born on this day in 1922.

Irwin Allen's Land Of The Giants was one of those shows that never quite fell on my radar for years until I discovered it in television syndication -- the true stomping ground for all great SciFi shows -- and then I didn't exactly fall in love with it.  It was good -- a bit campy at times, like much of Allen's library -- and suitable Fantasy entertainment.  Gary Conway played 'Captain Steve Burton' aboard this true original, and Conway was born on this day in 1936.

Without a doubt, George A. Romero's 'Living Dead' films are far more Horror than they are true Science Fiction, but -- as grandma used to say -- "An apocalypse is an apocalyse."  Thus, I fell compelled to give perhaps the greatest creator of End Times since God himself credit in this space.  On his incredible resume, there are many films deserving of mention, but I'll simply mention Night Of The Living Dead (1968), The Crazies (1973), and Monkey Shines (1988) just to name a few.  Though he's no longer with us, Romero was born on this day in 1940.

[Source: IMDB.com]

For the record:
Despite his record of practically bringing the contemporary zombie movie to life (snicker snicker), Romero's earlier work didn't earn him the kind of attention he received later in his career.
  • At the 1988 Sitges - Catalonian Film Festival, his work on the Horror film Monkey Shines earned him three out of four trophies (wins for 'Best Screenplay,' 'Best Director,' 'Prize of the Catalan Screenwriter's Critic and Writer's Association' while settling for nominations alone on 'Best Film').
  • In 1994, Romero received a Saturn Award nomination (sponsored by the Academy Of Science Fiction, Fantasy, And Horror Films) in the category of 'Best Director' for his work on The Dark Half (1993).
  • In 2017, the director received his 'star' on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.

ExtraExtra Alert:
In 2025, I received an all-new home video release of Creepshow 2 (1987) -- which Romero scripted in part -- from the fine folks at Arrow Films in exchange for review coverage on SciFiHistory.Net.  Interested readers can find my review right here.

Veteran character actor John Schuck played a terrific Klingon ambassador in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, as can be seen above when he was trying to convince the Federation council just how bad a renegade Capt. James T. Kirk was.  He turned up again in the same role as part of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.  Additionally, I remember him from a mid-70's SciFi/Comedy called Holmes and Yo-Yo, the ongoing stories of a cop and his android partner.  Schuck was born on this day in 1940.

Michael Beck burst onto the silver screen as the star of The Warriors in 1979.  He found Science Fiction in 1982 as the star of the forgettable Battletruck, following that up with the equally forgettable Megaforce.  About two decades later, he secured roles in the fan-favorite Babylon 5 and its short-lived spin-off, Crusade.  Beck was born on this day in 1949.

Patrick Bergin is another one of those actors who I thought would have a bigger, broader career.  Still, he has given genre projects a fair go, appearing in such properties as Highway To Hell (1992), Frankenstein (1993), Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace (1996), The Lost World (1999), Escape Velocity (1999), Merlin: The Return (2000), Beneath Loch Ness (2001), and Smallville.  Bergin was born on this day in 1951.

It would appear that the beautiful Lisa Eichhorn tends to gravitate toward far more conventional fare as opposed to genre entertainment, but she did join genre favorite Michael Paré aboard the poorly-reviewed but fondly-remembered Moon 44 (1990).  Her resume also includes guest spots aboard Tales Of The Unexpected and TV's Swamp Thing for good measure.  Eichhorn was born on this day in 1952.

Not content enough with being just a pretty face, the lovely Jenette Goldstein decided to defy the odds, and thank goodness she did so with conviction!  In 1986, she starred as the memorable 'Vasquez' -- the smart-mouthed, trash-talking Colonial Marine -- in Jim Cameron's Aliens.  Goldstein was born on this day in 1960.

I only watched the first season or two of Andromeda, so unfortunately I really couldn't tell you much about Brandy Ledford's character or performance, Doyle.  From the picture above, though, I'd say she's rough, tough, and ready to rumble!  Other appearances in the realms of the Fantastic include work aboard Demolition Man (1993), The Outer Limits, Welcome To Paradox, First Wave, Viper, Poltergeist: The Legacy, Strange Frequency, The Invisible Man, Smallville, Stargate SG-1, and Stargate: Atlantis.  Ledford was born on this day in 1969.

Creatively, Bug Hall has been all over the map, though it would appear the actor fits most easily into conventional comedies.  As far as SciFi/Fantasy goes, he's sported roles aboard The Day The Earth Stopped (2008), Arachnoquake (2012), and NBC's short-lived Revolution.  Hall was born on this day in 1985.

The versatile Augie Duke has a resume rich with genre entries, though a good number of them appear to be indie-style fare that rarely gets a great deal of attention.  Still, fans can see her doing her thing aboard such projects as Extracted (2012), Bad Kids Go To Hell (2012), Spring (2014), Awaken (2015), Welcome To Horror (2016), The Black Room (2017), Hell's Kitty (2018), Another Plan From Outer Space (2018), Blood Craft (2019), Barney Burman's Wild Boar (2019), Clown Fear (2020), Antidote (2021), 6:45 (2021), The Amityville Moon (2021), Moon Garden (2022), Static Codes (2023), and Thou Shalt Kill (2025).  Duke was born on this day in 1986.

For the record:
I think there may be a set of critics that've largely dismissed Ederlezi Rising as a kinda/sorta bloated sex film mainly because Stoya -- one of its stars -- has worked in visual sexual therapy (ahem) for years.  I'd argue that's a dissservice because intimacy is certainly a component of the tale the film doesn't revel in excess the way other adult-themed flicks do.  On the festival circuit, the film has been warmly received, winning a handful of statues, including a 'Best Film' category twice while missing out on a few other nominations.

One of the things that Space: Above And Beyond did exceedingly well (in my opinion) is the program shackled its main characters with some terrific emotional baggage upon which the actors could mete out a stronger performance.

Case in point: "Never No More," an hour which first aired on this day in 1996.  The story featured Lt. Vansen abandoning the Fighting 58th in order to serve briefly with another squadron, this one commanded by an old boyfriend.  They've been stalking an alien hit-and-run artist -- an aerial wizard the star fighters can't see coming before they've been hit -- and Vansen confuses having "something to prove" with "nothing to lose."
