1939's The Wizard Of Oz is one of those films my parents made us sit down and watch when we were kids. Honestly, I never much cared for it, but I'd never deny its greatness. In any event, Margaret Hamilton played pure evil in the guise of 'The Wicked Witch Of The West' in it. Interestingly enough, this wasn't her only foray into the wider world of OZ: in 1972, she voiced the character of 'Aunt Em' in the animated Journey Back To Oz for Filmation Associates. Though she's no longer with us, Hamilton was born on this day in 1902.

Screen legend Kirk Douglas was a part of so many terrific projects, and he even occasionally ventured into the realm of Science Fiction and Fantasy. In 1954, he made a welcome splash in genre with a big role aboard 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea for Walt Disney Productions. That same year, he explored epic poetry, portraying Ulysses in his return from the Trojan War for Paramount Pictures. In 1971, he joined Yul Bryner aboard the Fantasy-themed The Light At The Edge Of The World for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. In 1973, he headlined a telefilm adaptation of the musical version to Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde, a project that scored three Primetime Emmys nominations. 1977 saw him exploring a possible Apocalypse fueled by conflict in the Middle East in a picture called The Closen (aka Holocaust 2000). 1978 saw him dabbled in the world of the supernatural with a big role aboard Brian De Palma's The Fury. In 1980, he delivered an incredible two cult(ish) hits with big roles in Saturn 3 and The Final Countdown. Though he's no longer with us, Douglas was born on this day in 1916.

I may be putting it mildly, but Douglas enjoyed a very full life, living to the ripe age of 103 before passing away. During his time in the entertainment industry, he enjoyed an incredible number of awards and nominations ... but the ones that matter most in these parts are the SciFi ones. In that respect, he did enjoy a 1981 Saturn Awards nomination -- 'Best Actor' -- for his work in The Final Countdown.
ExtraExtra Alert:
In 2021, I received a complimentary new release of The Final Countdown (1980) -- in which Douglas starred -- in exchange for review coverage on SciFiHistory.Net. Interested readers can find my review right here.

Funnyman Dick Van Patten didn't find all that much to laugh about when he found himself at odds with some mechanized evildoers in the original Westworld (1973). His genre resume really only grew richer after that, as he managed to secure screen time in such properties as The Girl With Something Extra, Kolchak: The Night Stalker, The Strongest Man In The World (1975), Wonder Woman, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Shaggy D.A. (1976), Spaceballs (1987), Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman, and Groom Lake (2002). Though he's no longer with us, Van Patten was born on this day in 1928.

Quark was one of those zany television comedies that I think you either liked or you didn't. (Given it's short life on the Boob Tube, I'm thinking most folks didn't like it.) But it sprang from the mind of Buck Henry, an unmitigated comic genius who also contributed to the world of Get Smart, among other things. Though he's no longer with us, Henry was born on this day in 1930.

Paddi Edwards has a few interesting contributions to the world of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Though much of her career was spent in fairly conventional projects, she dipped into our favored realms with work aboard Halloween III: Season Of The Witch (1982), Tales Of The Gold Monkey, Voyagers!, and Star Trek: The Next Generation (where her character was one of the first to point out the dangers of anyone hanging near Wil Wheaton). But perhaps true genre fans know her best by her pipes because, in 1984, she served as the uncredited voice behind the character of 'Gozer' for a little something something called Ghostbusters. Though she's no longer with us, Edwards was born on this day in 1931.

Think what you may, but I'll always say that Dame Judi Dench is one classy lady and one helluva talented actress. Why? Because when it comes to acting she doesn't appear to take sides, meaning that she'll star in anything so long as the property interests her. Not many women in her league would so much as give The Chronicles of Riddick a second look, but her presence elevates the game for everyone. Plus, she rather fearlessly was the first women to order James Bond around ... and that takes cajones! Dench was born on this day in 1934.

In 1987, Michael Nouri paired up with undercover-alien Kyle MacLachlan as the oddest good-cop/alien-cop pairing ever made in the brilliant B-Movie, The Hidden. Also, he played no less than 'Count Dracula' himself aboard the short-lived The Curse Of Dracula series for primetime television in 1979. In 1990, he dipped into the realm of Comic Book Fantasy with a role aboard Captian America. In 1995, he returned to Science Fiction with a role in Hologram Man. Gene Roddenberry originally had the idea to put a Klingon aboard the Enterprise NCC 1701-D as kind of an homage to one of the original series' central conflicts, and Michael Dorn won the part. Lucky for us, Dorn ended up being more than just set dressing, bringing alive the character of Worf and playing him on both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Who wouldn't love a Star Trek: Capt. Worf spin-off? I sure would. Mr. Dorn was born on this day back in 1952.

Honestly, it's hard to believe that actor John Malkovich has done so little Science Fiction. Throughout his career, he's certainly gravitated toward roles less conventional than the next person, and one would think that might push him into our realm more often than it has. He did appear in 2008's Mutant Chronicles, though, and there was 2005's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Malkovich was born on this day in 1953.

According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"The Star Wars saga continues as new heroes and galactic legends go on an epic adventure, unlocking mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past."
For the record:
With all of his self-promoting praise for the direction he took the franchise, why is it that Rian Johnson's story missed out on a script award from the Academy Awards? Even franchise star Mark Hamill -- for a time, until he was reined back in -- spoke up against Johnson's mishandling of characters, but -- in the end the film still garnered Academy Award nominations in the category of 'Best Achievement In Sound Mixing,' 'Best Achievement In Sound Editing,' 'Best Achievement In Music Written For Motion Pictures,' and 'Best Achievement In Visual Effects.' Truth be told, the Academy Of Science Fiction, Fantasy, And Horror Films was much more enamored with Johnson's film, giving it an incredible thirteen nominations (only four wins). Also, the 2018 Hugo Awards nominated it in the category of 'Best Dramatic Presentation - Long Form.' In the end, maybe the Force was strong with it.
