Of all the Star Trek first season episodes, I think the one that best demonstrated that Roddenberry wasn't always interested in sticking entirely to SciFi stories 100% of the time was "The Conscience of a King." The episode aired on December 8, 1966, and it essentially was a morality play from start to finish: the Enterprise is transporting the renowned actor Anton Karidian to another world, and Kirk slowly realizes that the man may, in fact, be a mass murderer who's assumed another identity in order to escape justice.
One could argue that it was no less than visionary film director Georges Méliès who made early film Science Fiction entirely possible in reaching audiences. Though he's no longer with us, Méliès was born on this day in 1861.
