Around here, even the briefest of flirtations with Science Fiction typically earn a mention: Rod Cameron certainly flirted with SciFi with the lead role aboard The Electronic Monster (1958). Other visits paid to the realm of the Fantastic include parts aboard The Monster And The Girl (1941), Psychic Killer (1975), and Project UFO. Though he's no longer with us, Cameron was born on this day in 1910.

Leigh Brackett was born on this day in 1915, and by the time she entered her mid-twenties she was already publishing her science fiction stories. Though her first novel was a hard-boiled mystery, it was her sci-fi that had started to grow more and more complex. Readers commonly refer to her as the 'Queen of Space Opera,' and she's responsible for many memorable novels and short stories throughout her illustrious career. It was George Lucas who hired Brackett to pen the first draft of The Empire Strikes Back, which she completed not long before her death from cancer in March, 1978.

What a brave man! Kim Spalding brought a pistol to an 'alien fight' aboard It! The Terror From Beyond Space (1958) for MGM Studios, a film that's often referenced as an influence for Ridley Scott's Alien. Though he's no longer with us, Spalding was born on this day in 1915.

I don't feature much from the classic 1960's Batman series on SciFiHistory.Net for a variety of reasons. First, I really hate the show (for personal reasons); second, it's far more Adventure/Fantasy than it is Science Fiction. Still, every now and then a particular character comes up that's closer to SciFi, and I'll give that performance a shout. Today's evidence: the venerable Eli Wallach chewed scenery as the nefarious 'Mr. Freeze' for two glorious episodes. The renowned actor also paid visits to the worlds of The Sentinel (1977), Tales Of The Unexpected, and Worlds Beyond. Though he's no longer with us, Wallach was born on this day in 1915.

Holy vintage aircraft, Batman! Johnny Duncan was 'Robin' to Robert Lowery's 'Batman' aboard the late 40's serial Batman And Robin (1949) for Columbia Pictures Corporation. He also enjoyed a teensy weensy role aboard the ill-fated Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959) for Ed Wood, Jr. Though he's no longer with us, Duncan was born on this day in 1923.

Critical favorite Ellen Burstyn joined Christopher Nolan's thought-provoking Interstellar (2014) in a small but critical role to the human drama at the film's core. Burstyn was born on this day in 1932.
Actor Kenneth Colley (in the picture above, he's the one not suffering a force chokehold at the Force-powered wrath of Darth Vader) found fame in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (and again in Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi) as Admiral Piett. Colley was born on this day in 1937.
W.D. Richter definitely has a few credentials genre fans get excited about. As a screenwriter, he's responsible for scripts for Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1978), Dracula (1979), and Big Trouble In Little China (1986). As a director, he brought the SciFi/Cult flick Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension (1984) to the silver screen. Richter was born on this day in 1945.

Mark Rolston -- pictured above from James Cameron's Aliens (1986) -- is one of those terrific character actors who delivers big things with even the smallest of opportunities. To be perfectly honest, Patrick Fabian doesn't do much Science Fiction. Still, roles aboard franchises like Star Trek: Voyager, Fox TV's Millennium, and TV's short-lived Timecop do deserve a nod. Fabian was born on this day in 1964.
Source Code is actually a pretty terrific time-travel yarn that comes apart just a bit in the final reel when -- for political reasons -- the script kinda/sorta concocts a goofy villain that pretty much defies the logic of its era, but otherwise it's a very solid thriller. Jeffrey Wright (pictured above) joined soldier Jake Gyllenhaal in the attempt to undo an act of terrorism before it's too late. Also, he's doing the best he can with HBO's lukewarm Westworld right now. Wright was born on this day in 1965.
In his younger days, C. Thomas Howell joined an ensemble of talented young actors who helped Steven Spielberg bring E.T. - The Extraterrestrial to life in 1982. Since that time, the man has stayed busy, appearing in a wealth of genre projects including Red Dawn (1984), Kindred: The Embraced (1996), The Outer Limits, War of the Worlds (2005), Torchwood: Miracle Day, The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), and NBC's popular Grimm. Howell was born on this day in 1966.
The lovely Christa Campbell has built a terrific resume in some quality B-style projects, including her work as 'Rachel' in 2013's Spiders 3D. Campbell was born on this day in 1972.
Because I watch a lot of films, I'm often asked for one of my secret favorites that no one (or very few people) have seen much less heard of; and -- over the last year or so -- my answer has been 2012's delightful SciFi rom/com Safety Not Guaranteed. For starters, I hate rom/coms, and the fact that this one struck me speaks volumes. Given the fact that it happens to be SciFi-lite is only a plus. It was headlined by Aubrey Plaza, and her cinema paramour was none other than Mark Duplass (pictured above). As the man who man or may not have invented time travel, he elevates the picture to a whole new level of charm. Duplass was born on this day in 1976.
In 1999, Roswell premiered the first of its three seasons, and one of the program's regulars was Shiri Appleby. After the program ended, she's continued working in television across the entertainment spectrum with occasional appearances on the silver screen. Appleby was born on this day in 1978.

Most folks know actor Jack Huston as the tortured and troubled hitman Richard Darrow from HBO's spectacular Boardwalk Empire, but -- in 2008 -- Huston made an appearance as a Viking who befriends a man from the stars in the great B-movie Outlander. Huston was born on this day in 1982.
Pretty-as-a-picture Emily Browning took the lead faithfully in Zack Snyder's kinda/sorta confusing Fantasy Sucker Punch (2011) and did what she could with the material, but her work aboard American Gods is divine. Browning was born on this day in 1988.
Caleb Landry Jones caught my attention when he appeared as the mutant 'Banshee' in the stellar X-Men: First Class (2011); but it wasn't until I caught him as a Leukemia suffered with a chance at immortality in the under-rated vampire flick Byzantium (2012). Then, he took an impressive turn as the lead in Antiviral, a smart sci-fi satire that explores an unimaginably dark turn in our future at how we embrace celebrity. Jones was born on this day in 1989, and he's definitely a talent to watch.
Another graduate of X-Men: First Class, young Nicholas Hoult helped bring The Beast to life in that film as well as its sequel, X-Men: Days of Future Past. Additionally, he's fully embraced genre entertainment by securing roles in Jack the Giant Slayer, the zombified Warm Bodies, and Mad Max: Fury Road. Lastly, rumors persist that he'll be back in Beast-form for X-Men: Apocalypse. Hoult was born on this day in 1989.
At SciFiHistory.Net, there are no small people ... only small roles: and the lovely Alexandra Bartee enjoyed some modest screen time as an EMT aboard the streaming SciFi property Powers. Bartee was born on this day in 1990.

That moment so, so many Trekkies, Trekkers, and general Trek enthusiasts had waited for -- had pined and prayed for -- finally arrived on this day in 1979 (well, at least for the people of Los Angeles) when Paramount Pictures proudly presented Star Trek: The Motion Picture for its theatrical premiere. There had been so many rumored starts and stops over the years since the cancellation of our beloved series, but here it was -- Star Trek -- back again, for everyone to enjoy in its silver screen glory.
Honestly, it didn't matter all that much to so many of us how good, great, or even acceptable the picture was: it meant, simply, that Star Trek could live on. The film had mixed critical reception, but fans turned out -- old ones and new ones alike -- to see Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Uhura, Chekov, Sulu, and Scotty once again going boldly where no one had gone before.

If IMDB.com's citation for 2019: After The Fall of New York is correct, this 1983-filmed vision of the Apocalypse didn't get a proper U.S. release until this day in 1984, but who's counting? A star is born! Far less of a whacked-out drug trip than 2001: A Space Odyssey, 2010: The Year We Make Contact premiered in theatres (in the U.S. and Canada) on this day back in 1984. The film didn't answer all of the questions raised from the motion picture that spawned it, but it certainly revisited astronaut Dave Bowman's message for audiences wanting to know more.

Directed by Yusry Abd Halim from a story by Meor Shariman, the Fantasy/Adventure starred Saiful Apek, Fasha Sandha, and Aznil Hj Nawawi. According to our friends at IMDB.com, here's the plot summary:
"Hairi works at Klon Technologies searching new vaccines for new diseases. He's too shy to approach Tania, the girl he loves (Professor Klon's secretary) and awkward enough to swallow a "cicak"-lizard which fell in his cup of coffee. The lizard was contaminated by a new virus and Hairi will gains some characteristics of the "cicak". A new super hero is born: Cicakman. Hairi's joint-tenant (and best friend) works with him at Klon Technologies, too, and he suspects Professor Klon of creating and spreading new viruses, just to improve his business' turn-over and his profit. But how to establish the tycoon's misbehavior? They need to enter and seek through Professor Klon's office, thus, they need Tania's pass to clear the security devices... and Hairi is too shy, too awkward... The "cicak" (say "Chichak") is the Malay name of a little lizard (gecko?) able to walk the window-panes and the ceiling, and the Malayan brats are used to throw rubber bands at, just to have it fall. The characters' play is at once humorous (Hairi), overdone (Prof. Klon and the Ginger twins) or serious (Danny, Tania), and many viewers can be surprised and dislike this mixture. Now, you won't be surprised, so will you like it?"
For the record:
To the film's credit, Cicak-Man earned a bit of extra praise from its screening at the Malaysian Film Festival.
