Netflix certainly got into the business of Science Fiction and Fantasy in a big, big way when it released the first season of the German co-production Dark to the world masses on this day in 2017. With a big cast and even bigger ideas, Dark plumbed the depths of life and loss by way of time and interdimensional travel, all of which was linked to a small town seemingly in the middle of nowhere. The plotlines were a bit hard-to-follow at times -- such can be the nature of mind-blowing mythmaking -- but it all boiled down to the little, little secret of ... well ... I won't spoil it for you. I'll simply put up the series' premise as listed on IMDB.com:
"A family saga with a supernatural twist, set in a German town, where the disappearance of two young children exposes the relationships among four families."
For the record:
Dark lasted an incredible three seasons, though I thought the final season took the show it a bit more of a fantastical direction than perhaps audiences were used to up until that point. (That's not a complaint, just an observation.) Also, while December 1st was not the first episodes truly first screening (it played in 'special presentations a few times before public exhibition), I think it best to acknowledge the date in this space. Lastly, the show scored an impressive number of awards nominations and even a solid handful of impressive wins; so consider it definitely worth your time.

Between the years of 1926 and 1952 (at the time of his passing), Ray Taylor worked as a director on an incredible one hundred and fifty different projects, some of which weren't completed until after he left us. Though I'm most impressed with his uncredited work aboard the original Flash Gordon (1936), he has a handful of other solid genre credentials under his belt. Though he's no longer with us, Taylor was born on this day in 1888.

Late in his professional career, Dick Shawn scored some small roles that no doubt caught the attention of those paying close attention: he found himself gainfully employed aboard Tales From The Darkside, Faerie Tale Theatre, The Twilight Zone, Captain EO (1986), and Amazing Stories. Additionally, he was featured aboard the tepid Batman & Robin vocally as the 'Snow Miser.' Though he's no longer with us, Shawn was born on this day in 1923.

Actor and stuntman Eddie Smith built a career by squeezing himself into whatever spaces were available. So far as genre appearances go, he enjoyed a bit of screen time aboard Batman, The Invaders, Marooned (1969), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), Kolchak: The Night Stalker, and Futureworld (1976). Though he's no longer with us, Smith was born on this day in 1924.

The venerable James Greene not only made an appearance aboard the popular Star Trek spin-off Star Trek: The Next Generation but also he went on to guest roles aboard Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. Furthermore, he managed to find employment aboard Max Headroom, Alien Nation, Quantum Leap, Philadelphia Experiment II (1993), The Adventures Of Brisco County Jr., Charmed, and ABC TV's short-lived Miracles. Though he's no longer with us, Greene was born on this day in 1926.

As much as I totally dug Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, I'll still freely admit that the Bajorans weren't always my favorite creation for the greater Trek universe. I did enjoy the more political-charged stories -- especially those pitting Bajor against those evil Cardassian overseers -- but "it is what it is." In any event, the great Robert Symonds (above left) made an appearance on the program in the hour titled "Accession." The actor also appeared on Future Cop, The Six Million Dollar Man, Knight Rider, Airwolf, and the popular Quantum Leap for good measure. Though he's no longer with us, Symonds was born on this day in 1926.

Are you kidding me? What an incredible name! Malachi Throne! Wow! That's right out of a Stephen King novel! I recognize the man right away from his role in Star Trek's classic "The Cage" (retooled in the program's first season as "The Menagerie"), but I didn't realize he's been in far more, including The Outer Limits, Lost In Space, The Time Tunnel, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea, The Six Million Dollar Man, Ark II, Project U.F.O., Star Trek: The Next Generation, M.A.N.T.I.S., Babylon 5, and Star Trek New Voyages: Phase II. He's definitely a SciFi veteran! Though he's no longer with us, Throne was born on this day in 1928.

How good is Science Fiction? It's so good it even wooed critical darling and occasional funnyman Woody Allen into the fold. Allen brought his absurd comic genius to life in Sleeper (1973), the story of a humble store owner being brought out of cryostasis to fight the government. Allen was born on this day in 1935.

Despite all of Farscape's greatness, the one area I've always said the writers struggled was in creating secondary characters almost seemingly only for the purpose of comic relief. Utu-Noranti -- as the kindly old medicine woman -- was one such character. Every now and then, they'd come up with something useful for her to do, but far too much of the time she was around only for a comic quip here or there. Still, actress Melissa Jaffer did what she could with the creation. As of late, she appeared as well in the stellar Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). Jaffer was born on this day back in 1936.

Even though I'm one of history's biggest Superman fans, I never much cared for Superman III (1983). Clearly, it was constructed to be the most commercial of the series, so I didn't have much use for a story that involved a hapless computer genius played by comedian Richard Pryor being duped into a scheme to bring down Big Blue. Though he's no longer with us, Pryor was born on this day in 1940.

Hollywood heavyweight Treat Williams enjoyed a nifty li'l cameo aboard a nifty li'l SciFi flick we call Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980). As can happen when you're creating new worlds and the new species to go along with them, SciFi tends to bury its own: that is, actors and actresses get buried under prosthetics and latex in order to bring new life to the big and small screens. Such is the case for Deep Roy, the actor who inhabited the role of 'Keenser' for Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), and Star Trek Beyond (2016). Roy was born on this day in 1957.

Hmm. On this day in 1995, the cult-themed telefilm titled The Adventures of Captain Zoom In Outer Space played in TV syndication. Initially intended as a TV pilot, Captain Zoom apparently never garnered the kind of attention it needed to actually get picked up, though I have traded words with folks online who allege to have seen its supposed hourly episodes.
