Those who are completely unaware of the behind-the-scenes history involving the much lauded TV franchise Star Trek would wonder why in the name of all that is sacred would a SciFi column give out kudos to classic comedienne Lucille Ball? That's because Trek owes her a huge, huge debt of gratitude for her allowing Desilu Studios (her own production company) to help push the Gene Roddenberry vision onto TV. For that, Trek enthusiasts should be forever grateful! Though she's no longer with us, Ball was born on this day in 1911.

From what I've read, the late Lilyan Chauvin is regarded as one of the most recognized faces in film and television and yet no one knows her name. (Sigh) That may not necessarily be the case with genre fans as we do tend to put names and faces together a bit more often than mainstream fans do. In any event, her talents can be found on display in such properties as Adventures Of Superman, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Predator 2 (1990), Universal Soldier (1992), Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings (1993), Earth 2, The X-Files, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Though she's no longer with us, Chauvin was born on this day in 1925.

While I have enjoyed a few books springing from the mind of her husband, I've yet to explore any of Janet Asimov's work. I know, I know! Shame on me! I've never read any Piers Anthony, or -- at least -- I can't recall having read anything by one of Science Fiction and Fantasy's most prolific authors. However, I consider that the benefit of bucket lists. I'm presently on a short story kick, so maybe I'll seek out whether he has a collection available. Readers of his Xanth series certainly claim it's worth the time and investment. Anthony was born on this day in 1934.

Ach! That's gonna leave a mark! Actor and stuntman Bobby Bass took one for the team -- the Star Trek team, that is -- with work in a wondrous six episodes. As a stuntman, Bass left an indelible mark -- or hand an indelible mark left on him -- in such genre projects as Westworld (1973), When Time Ran Out (1980), Megaforce (1982), and Predator (1987). Though he's no longer with us, Bass was born on this day in 1936.

While others might find this controversial, I've often maintained that M. Night Shyamalan is little more than a one-hit wonder. Outside of his The Sixth Sense, I really haven't enjoyed any other movie or TV projects he's done (that I've seen). While he often flavors his stories with elements of the supernatural and Science Fiction, it takes a bit more depth to craft quality narratives than I've seen from him. Shyamalan was born on this day in 1970.

The problem I have with most people who want to endlessly gripe about Fox Television constantly cancelling science fiction programs is that they typically ignore the reality of the situation: most shows that get shut down suffer that fate because they simply didn't catch fire in the here and now. Generally, there are usually as many good ideas as there are bad ideas that make up these programs, and there's probably no better example of that than Terra Nova. The show had a great premise -- in order to save mankind's future, a team of scientists and explorers are sent back in time to uncover a possible solution -- but then the writers never really focused on that idea until the lackluster ratings had killed the hour up against other shows on the tube.
Jason O'Mara was Terra Nova's capable lead. He was coming off a very solid performance in the Americanized version of the pretty stellar Life On Mars (hint: the U.S. version wasn't nearly as stellar), and, despite his charisma, there just wasn't enough there to stave off extinction. (Get it?)
