Oh, the cinematic career of Glenn Strange! He was often cast in supporting roles, and -- due to his build -- he occasionally filled out the shoes of quite a few baddies as well. Though much of his career was spent in Westerns, he did score time in projects like House of Frankenstein (1944), House of Dracula (1945), Abbott And Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948), and Space Patrol. Though he's no longer with us, Strange was born on this day in 1899.

The lovely Lois Nettleton got her start with a small guest role aboard Captain Video and His Video Rangers, but it didn't take long for her to garner Hollywood's attention. My goodness but Ann Blyth had some forehead, no? (I'm not complaining.) This gem of an actress built her career largely in the mainstream, but she did offer fans a look at something more with a memorable turn in a guest spot into The Twilight Zone ("Queen of the Nile"). Also -- unless I miss my guess or have my wires crossed -- I believe she was one of the first actresses to get the chance to play a mermaid on the silver screen with her work aboard Mr. Peabody And The Mermaid (1948). Blyth was born on this day in 1928.

Although I've said it before, it bears repeating: 1980's television was responsible for a whole lot of great series. One of my personal favorites was always The Greatest American Hero. Representing the law-and-order half of a team tasked with ridding the planet of evildoers was FBI Special Agent Bill Maxwell played with suitable charm by Robert Culp. SciFi fans probably know him best from The Outer Limits' episode "Demon With A Glass Hand," an hour penned by scribe Harlan Ellison that's often cited as one of the program's best. Though he's no longer with us, Culp was born on this day in 1930.

Actress Julie Newmar is probably best remembered by fandom for playing Catwoman in the late 1960's camp-infused Batman television show, but personally I recall her work from an episode of Buck Rogers In The 25th Century. As far as Science Fiction goes, she also made appearances in The Twilight Zone, Star Trek, The Bionic Woman, Jason Of Star Command, The Powers Of Matthew Star, 1988's Deep Space, and 1994's Oblivion. Newmar was born on this day in 1933.

Bob Balaban has been 'in the biz' for nearly fifty years, and while he continues to distinguish himself as a tremendous character actor in mostly mainstream dramas and comedies I prefer to cite his work in 1984's 2010 as one of his best roles. Hubba-Hubba Alert! I've always loved Lesley Ann Warren, and -- little known fact -- she screen-tested for the role of Lois Lane in Superman - The Movie almost based entirely on her work in the role as the intrepid newspaper reporter in a rarely remembered TV musical from 1975, "It's A Bird ... It's A Plane ... It's Superman!" Warren was born on this day in 1946.

I'd never argue that the 1980's underrated TV series Tales Of The Gold Monkey is SciFi or Fantasy (per se), but it's certainly how I'll always remember the stunning Caitlin O'Heaney. She starred as 'Sarah Stickney White,' a U.S. spy-in-hiding on a little island in the Pacific in the pre-WWII era. Thankfully, she's done some work in Science Fiction -- namely roles aboard Badlands 2005 and Alien Nation -- so that I can feature her here. O'Heaney was born on this day in 1953.

These days, it's practically impossible to think about Science Fiction and not mention the works of James Cameron. Ever since he started participating in the filmmaking process, he's been near and dear to our favored genre, starting with puttering behind-the-scenes in a secret favorite of mine from the 1980's called Battle Beyond the Stars. Otherwise? Well, how about The Terminator or Terminator 2: Judgment Day? Aliens? The Abyss? Or a little something called Avatar? Cameron was born on this day in 1954.

On this day in 1974 (in Belgium), the SciFi/Classic Soylent Green enjoyed its theatrical release. Directed by Richard Fleischer, the feature starred Charlton Heston and Edward G. Robinson in central roles, and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:
"In 2022, Earth is overpopulated and totally polluted; the natural resources have been exhausted and the nourishment of the population is provided by Soylent Industries, a company that makes a food consisting of plankton from the oceans. In New York City, when Soylent's member of the board William R. Simonson is murdered apparently by a burglar at the Chelsea Towers West where he lives, efficient Detective Thorn is assigned to investigate the case with his partner Solomon "Sol" Roth. Thorn comes to the fancy apartment and meets Simonson's bodyguard Tab Fielding and the "furniture" (woman that is rented together with the flat) Shirl and the detective concludes that the executive was not victim of burglary but executed. Further, he finds that the Governor Santini and other powerful men want to disrupt and end Thorn's investigation. But Thorn continues his work and discovers a bizarre and disturbing secret of the ingredient used to manufacture Soylent Green."
For the record:
I always thought that Soylent Green was really one of the first "environmentally conscious" Science Fiction films, something which tried to look at our world as a whole and what we were perhaps doing to it. I'd argue that it certainly sparked a trend in SciFi flicks to go a bit deeper into subject matter than just warp drive and laser pistols. The film was recognized by many to be worthy of acclaim. In 1974, it won the Nebula Award for Best Dramatic Presentation as well as taking the Grand Prize at the Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival. In 1975, it won the Golden Scroll for Best Picture from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films.

Among the mercenaries are Space Cowboy, a spacegoing truck driver from Earth; Gelt, a wealthy but experienced assassin looking for a place to hide; and Saint-Exmin, a Valkyrie warrior looking to prove herself in battle."
For the record:
Though many dismiss Battle Beyond The Stars as little more than a Star Wars knock-off (as if that's a bad thing), it's the kind of release for which legendary B-movie director Roger Corman became known for in the 1980's. With a script from John Sayles, the story essentially takes a page from 1954's Seven Samurai but transplants the warriors into deep space wherein they agree to defend peaceful farmers from an aggressive warlord. To the film's credit, it enjoyed four Saturn Award nominations (though didn't win any): 'Best Science Fiction Film,' 'Best Costumes,' 'Best Make-Up,' and 'Best Special Effects.' For all of her work in genre entertainment, the Academy Of Science Fiction, Fantasy, And Horror Films did award actress Sybil Danning the 'Golden Scroll Of Merit' in 1981 ... no small feat, indeed.
"Shad, a young farmer, assembles a band of diverse mercenaries in outer space to defend his peaceful planet from the evil tyrant Sador and his armada of aggressors. Among the mercenaries are Space Cowboy, a spacegoing truck driver from Earth; Gelt, a wealthy but experienced assassin looking for a place to hide; and Saint-Exmin, a Valkyrie warrior looking to prove herself in battle."

It received a nomination for 'Best Animated Film' for the 2009 Saturn Awards as well as a nod as the 'Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off, Or Sequel' from the 2009 Razzie Awards.
